Guardian
Some Canadians want Toronto to get a bid for the 2016 Olympic Games. However, some of us already thought about the prospect of the USOC trying again to get the Summer Olympics will be in their favor.

Every time Scotland has hosted NZ has hosted the next games, good sign maybe? I would like to see the games go to Auckland or Wellington, Perth, Cape Town or Cardiff sometime soon. Easily Glasgow.. something fresh. Hamilton is the Commonwealths Athens. So here on GB Glasgow and Hamilton are the front runners. As for those who believe that the CWGs should go to the first level cities in the Commonwealth, I say no. The CWGs are NOT the Olympics but are a great way to promote these so called provincial centres. Did anyone ever know about Edmonton, Victoria, Hamilton or Christchurch before the CWGs passed through these delightful citys?

Ripley
Wasn't Glasgow already chosen to bid for the 2014 CG? The Scottish CG Federation chose Glasgow over Edinburgh to represent Scotland in the 2014 bid. The actual host city won't be chosen until 2007 or 2008. Alexjc
So when is the final call for candidates? Using the Olympic moniker, would that be November 2005? From what I'm hearing so far, it dosen't look like a large pool of cities are going to front up. Only Canada seems to have an in house rivalry going, and Glasgow looks like the only serious contender out of the UK so far...
Apple
December 2005 is when we'll find out what Canadian city will make the Canadian bid for the Commonwealth Games. March 15-26, 2006 is the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. April 2006 is the launch of International Bid process March 2007 is the deadline for Lodgement of formal international bids to the CGF (so that's the final call for candidates) Then finally fall 2007 is when the CGF will announce the winner of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Hope that helps out

Apple
Nothing new just more official -------------------------------- Nigeria to bid for 2014 Commonwealth Games ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria aims to be the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and inaugurated a 14-strong committee on Tuesday to develop the bid. President Olusegun Obasanjo said hosting the event, which includes athletes from Britain and its former colonies, would be a critical step toward a future bid to stage the Olympic Games and the World Cup finals. "We have all it takes to host the games," Obasanjo said as he appointed the committee at a ceremony in the capital Abuja. Obasanjo said Nigeria has the facilities to stage the games which he hoped would improve global perceptions of Africa's most populous nation. Nigeria built a new all-seater stadium in Abuja to host the 2003 All-Africa Games and in 1999 staged the world youth soccer championships in nine stadiums across the country. Officials said last year that Nigeria wanted to host the games to mark the country's centenary. Britain's northern and southern colonies were merged in 1914 to form Nigeria. If the bid succeeds Nigeria would be the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games since the event was first staged in 1930. The Australian city of Melbourne is hosting the next Commonwealth Games, held every four years, in 2006 with India's capital city of New Delhi hosting the 2010 event. Rafa
i wonder why cape town withdrew from a 2014 commonwealth games bid especially when i believe that it would have been "in the bag" if they had bid....mmmm
Apple
South Africa winning the 2010 World Cup of soccer probably had something to do with Cape Town withdrawing its bid. But hey are you completely 101% sure they're not going to bid?

LuigiVercotti
Found these photos of Abuja's stadium: I have a question, not knowing much about Abuja. How does the local culture feel about women in sport (i.e. will there be problems with any Islamic prohibitions on female athletes)? Another question, even though Nigeria has significant oil wealth, how does the governement and business community expect to pay for the bid and games ifr successful? I know these sound ignorant but to be honest Nigerian and Abuja are very much unknown contrasted with the other potential bids

Apple
Cardiff may bid for Commonwealth Games The Welsh city of Cardiff is seriously considering making a bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Glasgow Herald reports that other British cities were expected to stand aside for Glasgow. But the newspaper reports that Cardiff officials, like their counterparts from Glasgow, have been to Melbourne to discuss that city's successful bid for the games next year. The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, are a sort of mini-Olympics featuring athletes and teams from 71 countries competing in 16 sports. The 2010 games are to be held in Delhi. Johannesburg was also expected to make a bid for the 2014 games. But the Herald said that the South African government has decided instead to support Nigeria, believing that a united front would help bring the games to Africa for the first time. Steven Purcell, president of the Glasgow City Council, said that the city would have to consider Cardiff's position before making a final decision on a bid. "I am confident that if Glasgow goes for it, given the wealth of experience we have in hosting events, that we have an advantage over Cardiff," he said. http://washingtontimes.com/upi/20050725-050831-4378r.htm

Apple
The bidding process for the 2014 Games is looking good. Its helluva a lot better than the boring 2010 bid and also the 2006 bid where everyone dropped out and automatically gave it to Melbourne.
Ripley
Y'know I can't help feeling slightly sceptical that so many countries...especially Nigeria...go out of their way to distance themselves form any association with the British Empire and then clamber over each other to celebrate it through sport....or if there is aid up for grabs through the Commonwealth. India is a force unto itself, Canada is increasingly tied to the US, Australia and NZ are increasingly linked with South East Asia and the UK is in the EU. Why are we still clinging on to the Commonwealth...do we still need it on a cultural level or is it an anacronysm now?
stevie
I can understand why a lot of the countries have moved away from Britain. I mean how would you like the idea of some country on the other side of the world dictating the law’s of your country? Britain has to realize that Canada, NZ, Australia, Nigeria, India etc. are not British anymore. We are New Zealanders, Australians, Canadians, Nigerians, Indians etc. and we have our own laws, customs, cultures and lifestyles. So what if the Empire has gone, Commonwealth Games are about countries coming together that share a common link in history. Also the Commonwealth Games give countries like NZ, Wales, Jamaica, Malaysia etc. who (face it) are unlike to ever (or not for a very long time) going to host the Olympic games, so it gives smaller countries a chance to host a large world wide event.
