I’ve still got money there being an ice rink on the stadium floor which would look incredible.

You might be in there to be disappointed.

Just watch the opening and closing ceremonies of Salt Lake City 2002 :P

Was that announcement before or after beijing got struck with a surge in omicron cases?

It was after they had already announced their very strict COVID closed loop arrangements.  They were already planning very strict measures before Omicron.

I’m sure it will still be a good openig ceremony with or without an ice rink.  Zhang Yimou is one creative and entertaining director.   Either way, I think it will be good.

Saw that in 2002.    Beinig would be quite capable of pulling this off, ie first to install an ice rink in its Opening since Salt Lake City 2002 .

One quesrion no-one has answered is why are both ends of the Beijing oblong are transparent white, while the middle square is solid white (?)

That’s the only reason I’m speculating if the centre square is solid ice or not ….. ?

maybe the oblong is both and ice rink and a projection screen.

I agree, it would make sense to.

Another sneak peak

Seems like some kind of stage was built at the left stands of the Bird Nest. Hard to tell what they're planning to do there besides those flagpoles

Oh, seems like the time stamp gets lost when you have to go to YouTube. Flame lighting starts at around 4:35.

Anyway, I would be very surprised to see an ice rink. It just doesn't fit the story we know they are telling, like, at all.

Well, technically...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I hate how the lightining of the cauldron seemed promising then that godawful tube came from underground and ruined the build up. Kim Yuna deserved more than that but at least the fans were very pleased.

It’s the Winter Olympic Games.

You don’t need an excuse to install an ice rink in the Opening Ceremony of a Winter Games.

Besides, ice dancing / skating is the blue ribbon event at a Winter Olympic Games and would be perfect platform to stun us all with an incredible sea of ice, like Athens did in 2004 at the Summer Games with an actual lake of water in the centre of the stadium.

That google earth image is what triggered this speculation of “will they” or “won’t they”  have an ice rink in the Birds Nest Stadium for the Opening Ceremony.

Can you explain why the centre square of the oblong is solid where as the ends are transparent?

I was on social media checking for any potential new updates, and apparently there's going to be a dress rehearsal on the 22nd that will include fireworks testing across the city, which I assume would be similar to the 2008 ceremony fireworks.

Hopefully if it does happen, some footage will make its way online

For now, it looks like light testing has continued at the stadium - https://www.instagram.com/p/CY1UjkXLs3y/

The final picture...what is the giant metal cube thing?

Where? Do you mean the shape above the stadium where the light beams meet?

…. intriguing tall narrow structure right outside the Stadium.  Is that a crane (?)

Some basic box-like structure too on the stadium roof that might be unrelated …

Wondering to if there is any technical relationship in the Opening Ceremony between one or more of these structures. …. ?

Does the 100 minutes also include the parade of athletes? if so will be a very short ceremony, 20 mins artistic?

The 100 minutes is for the entire ceremony

From what I understand, the ceremony contents will all connect to form the "story", so I imagine that there will be several artistic portions throughout the ceremony instead of one dedicated section. Maybe something along the lines of PyeongChang's closing, which spread artistic performances around each protocol segment

Maybe?

It seems like the Ling Long Pagoda and the Olympic Tower are connected via some sort of dotted lights to the tower in front of the stadium, which itself is connected to the stadium roof structure

I drew the dotted lines to illustrate the areas I was curious about.

These may well not have a role to play … but am curious noentheless …

how long does the athletes parade for winter normally take?

I guess unlike Tokyo what they lack in time they will make up for in spectacular grandeur :)

Yes 100 minutes for the entire Opening Ceremony.

Announced officially by Beijing 2028.

The Parade of Nations may will be relatively quick with possible clever use of more than one entry to the stadium (?)

It’s very cold for the spectators so that’s why it will be 100 minutes total.
