The OC wanted to incorporate that feature. And no, it wasn't one particular church choir. It was an amalgam of the best of the choir singers of the Atlanta area. Too bad they didn't consult you on the outfit. As was done in, for example, at the 1947 Olympics, the 1996 games (and others too) would have been imho more big-time formal and big-sound ceremonial if whichever choir was used (the college's, the best singers from throughout Atlanta, etc) had been situated in a permanent location in the stadium and used frequently throughout the entire time of the opening and closing. But then again - as I said -- where were you then to have given your golden views when needed? Not 25 years after the fact? Quote

Or back before TV, back way before the internet, of course, when movie theaters would regularly show what's known as newsreels. Whatever the case, your comment made me look more closely at London 1948. The video above, posted to the IOC's Youtube channel, makes me realize that opening featured, hey, a large choir. I don't think that would have made me believe I was watching a salute to British pop-rock stars. Or a tribute to the glitz of UK's Hollywood. I wonder if 1948 had a segment that featured an old-timey version of Mr Bean? Maybe Laurel and Hardy were flown to London for the occasion? Quote

Actually, it wasn't that long ago when I couldn't figure out exactly why most Olympic ceremonies lacked a certain big sound or hero-ized quality. I originally thought it was maybe the choice of music or the type of singers they had. I posted a video several weeks ago of a person doing rap with a back-up choir. It was based on Puff Daddy's remix of Sting's "Every Breath You Take." When even a presentation like that can be made to fit an Olympic ceremony, I went a-ha. Quote

So now consider the relationship between newsreels and Olympic opening ceremonies 1 Quote
Olympics2028 Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 ^ I watched a few more videos of older and newer Olympic ceremonies, segments I've never seen before. That includes the 1948 games and portions of the 2012 games. I didn't realize I really hadn't watched as much of the latter as I thought I did. London is such a big-time place, that I recall thinking I'd give 2012 more time and attention than I've done with other games. But I guess I really didn't. Since this thread is about 2022's opening/closing, the segments I've seen from Beijing didn't make me go "yowsa" the way that segments of 2012 do. Quote

However, if the 2022 producer had put as much time into an adult choir as he apparently did with a children's one, that would have been more impressive to me. Anyway, I thought the opening and closing had music that was mainly canned, but I'm not sure. Quote

China and almost all countries prefer to use children choirs in opening and closing ceremonies because they simbolize hope, friendship, future, etc... concepts related to the olympic values. Can't remember an olympics in the last decade (or even this decade) which didn't used childrens choirs. Sometime is not about being impressive, most countries want to leave a message in their ceremonies, beijing 2008 was a mass power demonstration, with 2008 drummers in the center of the field, in 2022 they tried to convince the world they are a technological power, thats why they relied so much in led screens and special effects Quote

The use of an adult and children's choir is the best of both worlds. I think that may have been the format followed by Olympic summer and winter games decades ago, but I'm not sure. Quote
