Beijing 2022 Ceremonies

Recommended Posts

There was a third rehearsal last night, with Zhang apparently saying that his job at this point is no longer to make the show better, but to make the broadcast better

This statement seems to fit with the other past statements calling the ceremony "practically ready" now, so all that's left is for Feb 4 to come

Thanks for the tip Sir Rols, I appreciate that.

Actually, just a PSA also about meta-tagging when one starts a thread. You are one of the few who does it, and that’s good. I’m a fan of meta-tagging. But you tend to make yours too broad or vague to be useful.

Meta-tagging (or auto-tags, as I think they call it in this software) is designed to help in Search Engine Optimisation - they supposedly help the tagged content get thrown up more often in searches for that type of content.

That’s great for here when the terms are things like “2022 Olympic Games” or “winter Olympic Games”. It’s useless when the terms are just too broad. For example, I see you’ve just tagged terms like “open” (i doubt anyone would type the single word open into google), “winter” (that would flag it for any searches like winter clothes, winter temperatures, winter vacations etc), “games” (you’ll be fighting every search to do with video games), “Bach” (you’ll attract a lot of classifiable music fans) or “Thomas” (you’ll be flagging for any search of the name Thomas). Used that way they’re useless. I don’t know if you realise you can tag multiple words together - you just need to separate the search i terms with a comma: ie winter Olympic Games, Thomas Bach, opening ceremony, etc

i’ve fixed a few for you. Again, it’s good you’re using the function. For everyone, I do recommend using the tags when you start a thread - it’s good to game the internet and hopefully bring new people to the site

We only have less than one week to the start of Beijing 2022. February 3rd on NBC and Peacock i would look to watch. The problem for the Feb 4th date since their is a time difference between Beijing and Los Angeles.

Well NBC will still have the primetime replay at 5 PM on TV

Excellent, thanks Sir Rols.  Understood and makes sense, appreciate the tips.

Has there been any precedent of a NOC participating but boycotting the ceremonies?

Also, I accidentally came upon it.  Apparently, PRC did it again when Taipeh hosted the 2017 Summer Universiade.  So anything legit international that Taiwan has done, PRC has intentionally gone out of their way to embarrass Taiwain.  So 2x already.  Thus, Taiwan's action here is turn-about is fair play.

The title says opening ceremony prep, but I'm pretty sure it's for the pre-show

Yes, it is the pre show!!!! confirmed on this video below.

So, we haven't seen anything of the actual Opening Ceremony.

Generally speaking, international broadcast don't cover pre shows.

So... my expectation started to rise again....

Sincere apologies for double-posting, but I just posted this report by genuine accident in the “Beijing 2022” thread instead of here at the “Beijing 2022 Ceremonies” thread.

It’s about that same Beijing news report that Bear had also picked up on :).  I wasn’t aware of Bear’s post but I may as well post my take on it as well.

Is that ice behind him?

This still image lifted from a Beijing media report showing video of the preshow rehearsal has raised speculation that there may be a ice skating area/s in the Birds Nest, but just not in the centre ground screen area.

Are these circled areas immediately behind this reporter just melting snow causing puddles of water (?) at the end of the oblong ? Or are these end areas actually an ice skating area?

Notice the centre square ground screen area way further behind these areas appears to be dry, which is what you would expect on a ground screen.

I don’t know for sure but closer to the reporter it did does look suspiciously like a bit of surface water that can form when an ice surface is being groomed (?)

The google earth image from months ago shows this same area from an overhead view.

I’m probably overreacting,  ….. but not long to wait to find out for sure.

The day of that last rehearsal, it heavily rained.

I thought it would be a ramp given some pics posted over the last week, but it seems to be a large vertical screen instead. I doubt it would be only used for projections, though.

Another angle.

Anyway....SPOILERS. Following website posted a 30 second snippet of the Rehearsals.

Anyway, based on what I saw of the snippet, we can see the following:

Spoiler

- There seems to be artificial snow during the entrance of the Chinese flag. Not sure if it will be used later during the show

- They're using people dressed as the ethnicities of China again as in 2008 to carry the flag inside. Considering what's happening right now in certain two regions, this is surely going to bring a lot of ironic comments later.

- The kid performing the trumpet solo reminded me a lot of Maynard Ferguson in Montreal 1976 closing.

- At 0:04 you can clearly hear Ode to Motherland

- At 0:09 there seems to be a floating prop in the middle of the stage. Olympic Rings?

-We see how they're using the interactive screen briefly on which seems to be actors dressed as everyday citizens.

-0:15 seems like they're singing the Olympic anthem here. And it seems it will be performed in chinese. Again, similarities with 2008 where a capella chorus sang the anthem, except it was done on greek back then.

-0:22 there seems to be some structure emerging behind the children chorus. Also, seems like the large vertical structure is indeed being used for projections, at least during the Dove of peace segment
