I get that's the purpose of this thread, but it's going to get annoying and overbearing really quickly. Sure, because the Aussies are really influential when it comes to the Winter Olympics. Once again, to point out the obvious.. did you forget there's another Olympics on the calendar before Beijing? How we view China in relation to the pandemic could be a lot different a year from now. And thru the lens of the Olympics, we need to be on the other side of Tokyo before we can make an assessment on that one. More than that.. calls to boycott the 2022 Olympics are not and should not be about COVID. The central issue with China is human rights abuses. That's what would lead to a boycott. You didn't start this thread because of COVID. Remember that Quote
ulu Posted December 2, 2020 Report Posted December 2, 2020 Sky News is basically the Australian equivalent of Fox News and even has the same owner. Quote
ulu Posted December 2, 2020 Report Posted December 2, 2020 It's also nowhere near as popular in Australia as Fox News is in the US. Quote

Countries aren't going to boycott an Olympics out of hate. That's dumb and pointless. For years, the criticisms about China have been about major political issues. That's why the talks to boycott go back much further than the start of the pandemic. For the umpteenth time.. I know you get excited anytime you hear any talk of athletes or nations skipping the 2022 Olympics, but what is that supposed to accomplish? If it's about "hate" and payback for the pandemic, how does that hurt China or make them change their ways? You think they'll care if even a major country like Canada or Great Britain doesn't send its athletes and the platform behind that is about the virus? That doesn't make any sense. If there's any national backing behind these efforts (i.e. a country withholding funding so as to not support the sending of athletes to China), then that's a pretty big political statement. That needs to come with some sort of message of what they hope China will do in response. Sitting out from the Olympics on its own won't accomplish anything. It needs to be backed up with a "we are doing this because ________." Better have something there or else it's nothing more than an empty gesture that serves no real purpose. Quote

You need to stop taking any slight hint of a boycott as a strong indication it's going to happen. It's probably not going to happen. It'll take more than a leader that is "pro-boycott"... REDWHITEBLUE24 Posted December 10, 2020 Report Posted December 10, 2020 Slowly more and more sport stars are turning on China and Chinese companies so even if no nations boycott I think we might get some athletes boycotting. Quote

See, this I agree with. Individuals may say that their personal ideals are worth sacrificing the Olympics for and decide to say they refuse to go to China. Or at the very least speak out against them. 7 hours ago, REDWHITEBLUE24 said: If the UK puts sanctions on President Xi how could any British competitor attending the opening ceremony where he will open the games. This OTOH I don't agree with. Brits are not going to completely sever ties with China over government sanctions. I know it's a strange scenario involving Olympic athletes because they are government funded, but sanctions should not imply that a boycott is then automatic. Especially since that's a big "if" you're offering up there Quote

REDWHITEBLUE24 Posted December 14, 2020 Report Posted December 14, 2020 More and More politicians in the uk calling for Boycotting China - can't see how the government will be able to allow team GB to go. Quote
REDWHITEBLUE24 Posted December 15, 2020 Report Posted December 15, 2020 Debate in the UK Commons tomorrow on China - I think Raab likely to repeat his open to a boycott stance when it is inevitably raised as part of it. I think the aftermath of him saying that might be when the BOA and British winter Olympians comment on it - they need to starting preparing for a full scale debate on their participation. Quote

Nacre Posted January 6, 2021 Report Posted January 6, 2021 (edited) I understand that you want a boycott to happen. And that is your prerogative. But the rest of us doubt it will happen unless there are statements to that effect from groups like the British Olympic Association or the US Olympic Committee. EDIT: And as I write this the US Capitol Building is being stormed by protesters in the American equivalent of the era of the Gracchi Brothers of the Roman Republic. We have much bigger things to worry about as a country than whether we will snub a Chinese-hosted Olympics. Edited January 6, 2021 by Nacre Quote
