REDWHITEBLUE24
My guess is the BOA will announce by the end of the year the UK will boycott because the Goverment in the UK has one powerful weapon - the Funding allocation of Lottery funds could easily be banned if they don’t comply. REDWHITEBLUE24
Because fundamentally the BOA knows if it pushes forward with going to Bejing history will not look kindly on it’s leaders.
REDWHITEBLUE24
Washington: Republican Sen. Rick Scott has asked sponsors of Olympics to demand that 2022 Winter Games be move from Beijing due to human rights abuses and alleged genocide against Uyghur Muslims and ethnic minorities in China, media reports said. Scott, of Florida, wrote a letter, exclusively obtained by Fox News, to International Olympics Committee sponsors, including Airbnb, Alibaba Group, Allianz, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, DOW, General Electric, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, Toyota and Visa, reports Fox News. As a sponsor of the IOC, you are uniquely positioned to join in this fight and demand the IOC stand for human rights and remove the games from Communist China, or lose your sponsorship and support," Scott wrote to the companies Tuesday as quoted by the news channel. A coalition of 150 human rights campaigners also issued an open letter to sponsors asking them to drop their support for the 2022 games, reports Fox News. "I am sure you agree the crimes committed by General Secretary Xi are horrific. We cannot give a nation that is so overtly abusing human rights a platform to whitewash its crimes by hosting the Olympic Games," Scott wrote. "Therefore, I am asking you to stand for human rights and freedom, and use your considerable leverage as a sponsor of the 2022 Olympic Games to publicly urge the IOC to move the games to a nation that values human dignity and freedom." In an exclusive interview with Fox News Tuesday, Scott said he believed the sponsors would join in the calls to move the Olympic Games out of Beijing. He said he feels no body will like to be affiliated with a country's government that commits genocide of own men. "I don’t think anybody should want to be affiliated with a government that commits genocide against its own people," Scott told Fox News, calling the abuses toward Uyghurs "disgusting." "I am hopeful that the sponsors will see it is not in their best interest to be affiliated with a despicable government like this," he said. Scott said if the companies work with the Chinese Communist Party, "they are turning a blind eye to genocide."
REDWHITEBLUE24
https://cultmtl.com/2021/03/canada-should-boycott-the-2022-olympics-in-beijing-china-angus-reid-poll-survey/ A new study has found that most Canadians want to boycott the Olympics in China. According to a new survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, the majority of Canadians say that Canadian athletes, coaches and fans should boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The poll was framed in light of Canada’s relationship with China given the ongoing detention of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor (aka the two Michaels). The poll also addressed China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims and the perception that the Chinese government hasn’t offered an honest account of what happened during the COVID-19 outbreak. 56% of respondents believe that Canada should boycott the Olympics in Beijing, scheduled to run from Feb. 4–20, 2022. When looking at the results by party affiliation, it is clear that Conservative and Bloc voters are more likely to support a boycott of the Olympics in China than Liberal and NDP voters. FYI
Oh, if only Rick Scott spent as much time & energy actually doing his job & concentrate on how to make our own country better FIRST, instead of peddling his China “freedom” nonsense (& the letter he wrote to president Joe Biden on this was a total disingenuous joke, to say he the least). And he can “believe” all he wants, but the sponsors aren’t as dumb as he is (or at least playing dumb for show). They know at this very, very late point in the game that it’s Beijing 2022 or bust. AmaniS
I personally will not be watching. But politicians should stop telling the USOC what to do or not to do. The Olympics are to be separate from politics. I think viewers and athletes should voice their disapproval, but politicians should keep quiet and do their business. Threatening to cut funding if they don't boycott an Olympics would still constitute interfering in BOA's autonomy.

You say the Olympics should be separate from politics, but then in the next sentence suggest that athletes should be political. The IOC would tout themselves when they are successful in political endeavors (i.e. North Korea and South Korea having better relations around 2018), but they'll remain quiet around issues like China's human rights abuses. Can't have it both ways. I'm torn because I love the Olympics and I'll be watching every minute I can consume next February. At the same time, much moreso than 2008, we know more about the terrible things China is doing, so how do I reconcile that? We hear a lot of politicians looking to make a stand against China, but at the end of the day, are any of these efforts going to improve the situation in China? Will life be better for their people if there is less of an audience for their Olympics on TV or if certain countries or athletes boycott? Probably not. Which is why is irks me to see the Rick Scott's of the world thing they're effecting change by targeting American companies who might advertise during NBC's coverage. It's going to be next to impossible to separate sport from politics during the next Winter Olympics and I don't envy any media outlet or corporation that's going to try. But to the point I've said a dozen times over to REDWHITEBLUE here.. if anyone is going to talk about what do to about an Olympics in China, it should be with the focus on how many things better with China. And not like we've seen so many times over where people take a position on a socio-economic issue, only to forget about it as soon as the games are over

The individual voters in the IOC need to decide which weighs heavier in their conscience of right and wrong. But a government should stay out of the decision. These politicians are not speaking as individuals, but as parts of political parties and government officals.

I’d call the track record there dubious for some of them, at least. But as long as Republicans instigate voter suppression at home, they’re not only hypocrites but also give Beijing wonderful counterarguments. Stupid is as stupid does. REDWHITEBLUE24
According to the Financial Times the Biden Administration believes China might invade Taiwan relatively soon. If it Happens before the Games then global boycotts are surely very likely.

It’s the type of statement that would put a tremendous amount of political and media pressure on the BOA without being direct interference. Why didn’t you post the article, like you usually do? Anyway, for those who would like to still read it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/3ed169b8-3f47-4f66-a914-58b6e2215f7d And nowhere in there does it say “relatively soon”. It says perhaps in a FEW YEARS. 29 minutes ago, REDWHITEBLUE24 said: If it Happens before the Games then global boycotts are surely very likely. I’ve said all along that it would take something that massively stupid by the Chinese, for a full-scale boycott to ensue (& NOT because silly, hypocritical Republicans are flapping their lips). But I don’t see that happening before the Winter Olympics anyway. Again, like the article states, I can see that being a big concern in a few years, for the reasons the article states. But before February 2022? Highly unlikely, unless the Chinese really wanna ruin their own Olympic party. And something tells me that they don’t. olympikfan
If China invades Taiwan that's the start of the third world war. Tensions in Asia are alright high. Japan would not just be on the side lines and for this South Korea and other nations would also fear an invasion from China. The USA could not go alone in taking on China. So forget it wont happen. Even an economic war would be bad. This would effect athletes for any future competitions in China.
