For the first time ever, the Olympic Games have been postponed. On Tuesday Japanese President Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee (IOC) reached an agreement to reschedule the quadrennial event by one year amid rising fears over the Coronavirus pandemic that has taken thousands of lives globally. The Games, to instead be held in the […]

Decades from now, there will be a trivia question "what year were the 2020 Olympics held?"  Not a trick question, but a very interesting blip on the radar.  Notable that they're keeping the 2020 branding.

Happy the Olympics will still happen, even if we have to wait another year for it

I say Japan should just recycle their present  "2020" calendars for another round.  That way, the Tokyo 2020 geegaws will stay current.

Edit: Even the quadrennial ISOH (Int'l Society of Olympic Historians) meeting set for Paris on May 13 was cancelled.  I guess now, we can resked for, hopefully, Paris again next May.

Lessons for the IOC and future OCOGs:

1.  Make 90 days the cut-off before finalizing everything: materials, torches, brochures, medals, uniforms, etc.

2.  Scale down the number of sports and athletes by even 25%!  Why does it have to be 10,500 athletes and like, 28 sports?  Why aren't 7,500 athletes good enough in 20 sports?  NBC will have enough to broadcast even with 20 sports.  NO ONE gets to watch all the SPORTS coverage anyway.

3.  Have a standby neutral logo that can be tweaked a bit quickly.

4.  Shorten the goddamn Torch relays: why does it have to run throughout the entire country?  Won't 30 days do, and just hitting 5 or 6 majors cities.  Why does Greece have to run it for 7 days every two years?  (I know it's just an excuse for Greece to obtain like 200 torches from which the Hellenic OC sells off and gets to raise some of its funds.  It's such a cheeky maneuver.)

5.  Or make it so, so that if the delay were 4 years, then the postponement becomes a "domino" chain: i.e., the hosting duties are postponed one cycle each for the succeeding hosts.

The matter of the Villages is still problematic but could be partially alleviated if only they cut down the # of participating athletes!

The main reason why games are held in July/August is that NBC required so In the fall there are already other sports on TV

Not true.  It's a reason, but it's not THE reason.  That's the preferred timetable for a lot of sport federations and other entities.  It's not mainly for the benefit of American television

Fun will be carried over to next year, but I honestly felt at ease about this decision. This week, the number of infected people increased slightly in Tokyo during the cherry blossom viewing season.I do hope the same situation would not happen in the world at this time of next year.;)

Surprisingly, 2021 will be 125 years after the first Modern Olympic Games held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. A 125th anniversary is commemorated in term, as a Quasquicentennial. The term is broken down as quasqui-, meaning "and a quarter", and centennial, which is 100 years. "Quasqui is a contraction from quadrans "a quarter" plus the clitic conjunction -que, which means "and". That term was coined by Funk and Wagnalls editor Robert L. Chapman in 1961.

It is our policy to reply as courteously and helpfully as we can to such requests, and I answered Mr. Hatten on August 7, suggesting quasquicentennial. Since this is a history, I shall quote the letter in full: Dr. Wilfred Funk has passed your letter of July I on to us. We are happy to help, if you feel that you really want a new Latinate word meaning "one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary.

- Robert L. Chapman

The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta

It would have followed suit from Atlanta in 1996, branded itself as the "Centennial Olympic Games", and the Tokyo Games in 2021 would have referred as the "Quasquicentennial Olympic Games". By coincidence, Athens will set to stage the 2021 IOC Session, and the Presidential vote will be the leading item on the agenda during the meeting. In addition, 2021 will mark the bicentenary of the  Greek Revolution of 1821, which was celebrated as Greece's Independence Day.

In all probability, this year's IOC Session has also been postponed until Tokyo next year.  So Athens can forget hosting the 2021 Session.  That will happen in Tokyo as well; and any pressing matters this year can be covered by some sort of teleconference -- altho it will be difficult to have people staying awake at 2-3-4 AM their time, so that everyone around the globe is "live" at a global teleconference.

So the mascot could be Quasqui the Sasquach?
