The city of Salzburg

Above all this year but also all the other years Salzburg is known as birthtown of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the cultural capital. World famous is the annual Salzburg Festival. Behind the historical centre with the cathedral the Forteress Hohensalzburg is to see. From the Gardens of Mirabell Castle you have a beautiful view to the city. In the south of the city Castle Hellbrunn is a place to visit. The Arch Bishop Markus Sittikus let make Gardens full of "watergames" - you can be sure to come out wet.

The historical centre is UNESCO World Heritage and has an unique flair.

Salzburger Land

The "Bundesland" (~state) of Salzburg - known as Salzburger Land - is famous as wintersports destination. Just 40 kilometres south of the city, you are in the Alps and find famous destinations like Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Badgastein, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Flachau and Obertauern.

The Salzburger Land has 5 districts - beside of the city:

Flachgau: Around and north of the city it´s the Flachgau, with hills and lakes. The river Salzach is the border to Germany north of Salzburg. The town of Oberndorf is known as the birthtown of the famous Christmas Song "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night).

Tennengau:

South of Flachgau is Tennengau. The town of Hallein was an important place at the time of the Celts. Salt was won from the Dürrnberg mountain.

Pongau:

Next district to the south is the Pongau - beside of Salzburg the second venue cluster for the Olympic Wintergames with the Skijumping hill in Bischofshofen and the pists and slopes in Flachau, Flachauwinkl, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and Radstadt. The Pongau region is above all important for that wintersports destinations. World famous is the Gastein valley with the noble ressort of Badgastein.

Lungau:

Southeast of Pongau is the district of Lungau, which is only reachable through "Tauerntunnel" or over Obertauern (1800m) from Salzburg. Only one town of the whole district is lower than 1000 m over Sea level. Famous creatures of this region is the "Samson"

Pinzgau:

Last but not least the district in the west of Salzburg.

From here the "Großglockner Hochalpenstraße" a road over the highest mountain of Austria starts to Carinthia. Most regions are once more wintersports destinations like Zell am See, Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Famous are the waterfalls of Krimml.

Berchtesgadener Land

As the neigbouring district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria is also part of the bid with the bobsleigh run in Schönau am Königssee, some informations to this region. This area with the beautiful athmosphere because of the mountains around is just a few kilometres from Salzburg. Famous is the Königssee Lake in the middle of the mountains with its church of St. Bartholomä.

Now I want to show you some very special places of the region Salzburg. Today I begin with the world´s largest ice cave:

Eisriesenwelt

In the mountains of Tennengebirge near Werfen you find the world´s largest ice cave called Eisriesenwelt. That´s just 10 km from the skijumping venue Bischofshofen. At the end of the 19th century people began to discover the cave. In the 1 kilometer of the cave, which you can visit, you see unique ice forms, which change from year to year. And before going into the cave or after coming back again you have a wonderful view over the Salzach valley. I think it´s best to show you pictures, more information at the Website of Eisriesenwelt

I think, I´ll find enough time to talk about many Austrian themes until July 2007.  :;):

Another special place is Castle Hellbrunn in the city of Salzburg. The palace in the south of the city is above all famous for its "Waterplays".

Markus Sittikus - Arch Bishop of Salzburg in the 17th century let the garden build to some funny stations with different water effects. Most famous is the "table". When guests came, the Arch Bishop could turn the water on, that everyone became wet but he didn´t so. This joke is played with the visitors today (I´m sure Daniel could remember  :P ).

w_rundgang_2.jpg

So, you could say this Arch Bishop had a lot of humor.

In the parc you find also some grottos, like the Neptune grotto. Just with the technic of water sounds are made, figures are moved and a theatre is played.

w_rundgang_4.jpg

If you visit the Gardens of Hellbrunn you can be sure to get wet!

You always have to think, what the Arch Bishop would have done

Other mystical places in Salzburg are the small valleys with the so called "Öfen" and "Klammen" - gorges with rivers and brooks running "through" the mountains. The nearest ones to the Olympic venues are the "Salzachöfen" and "Lammeröfen" between the city of Salzburg and the Pongau Snow venues and Liechtensteinklamm in St.Johann im Pongau.

Most important river is the Danube passing the cities of Linz and Vienna. Austria is not only famous for the mountains but also for the musicians and componist led by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, from whom we celebrate the 250th birthday this year. The New Years Concert with the music of the Strauß-dynastie is broadcasted all over the world.

Wien  -  Vienna:

Today, I show you the most important places of Vienna, capital of Austria and one of the nine Bundesländer, which was cultural and political centre of Europe during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Let´s start in the centre of the 1.5 million inhabitants city - at Stephanplatz. You stand in front of the 136.7 metres high  St. Stephen´s cathedral. If you climb the tower (or you go up by elevator you see the "Pummerin" - the bell of St. Stephen´s, which is a symbol for the New Year in Austria, because the ringing Pummerin is broadcasted all over Austria. Also Stephansplatz is crowded in the New Years Night. At Midnight people start to dance to the sound of Johann Strauss´ "Blue Danube Waltz".

Stephansdom.jpg

Around Stephansplatz is the 1. Bezirk, and round borough you find the "Ringstraße" with the glamourus houses of the Empire. Austria´s Parliament, the City Council, Hofburg - the residence of the President, the Staats-Opera, Burg-Theatre, University, the Art- and the Prehistoric Museum are just the most important of them. The comfortable way to see the whole street is to go by Tramway Nr. 1 or 2!

If you come to Vienna from the West, the first monument is Castle Schöbrunn - sometimes mentioned as Austria´s "small Versailles". The summerresidence of Empress Sissi has 1441 rooms. After crossing the Gardens you find on a little hill the Gloriette monumentum from where you have a unique view over Schönbrunn and Vienna.

schoenb.gif

Another famous Castle is Belvedere. From the balcony of this castle Leopold Figl spoke the well-known words "Österreich ist frei!" (Austria is free) after signing the Treaty, 1955.

frei.jpg       belvedere.jpg

Some other famous symbols for Vienna are the "Prater" with its Ferries wheel and the cafés. Coffee has tradition in Vienna and can be enjoyed with the well-known sweets like Sachertorte.

More incredible pictures!!

BTW, Slam Sports has a good article about the new anti-doping law that the Austrian Government approved.

Sounds like they're working hard to put all of that behind them and show the world why they are the best choice for 2014 !!

Despite what ghost keeps posting on here.

Can't wait until you add more photos rolilau!    :)

Niederösterreich - Lower Austria

Vienna is surrounded by Austria´s biggest state Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). Its capital St.Pölten is the youngest one in Austria, because Vienna was capital of Lower Austria until 1986. The area is famous for the wine, above all in the "Wachau"-region on the river Danube, in "Weinviertel" ("Winequarter") and in the "Kamp"-valley. The river Danube sets the tone of Lower Austria. Well known is the "Wachau" with its lovely towns like Krems, Melk and Dürnstein.

In the north you find the "Waldviertel" ("Wood-quarter")-area, with its rough climate.

West of Vienna, the "Wienerwald" is a recreation area for the Viennese.

Das ist schön zu lesen, cube  :;):

Today, I want to show you Upper Austria. Already, the capital Linz reflects the great variety of the state. On the one hand Linz is known as industrial city, with the VOEST-steelworks, the chemicals industry and the shipyard, on the other hand Linz is famous for culture (European Cultur Capital 2009/only in German), research and modern art.

For the modern technologie the "Ars Electronica" is a highlight of the year. Researchs above all in the computer technologie are presented and awarded with the Prix Ars Electronica. The most famous son of Linz is the componist Anton Bruckner. Often visited is the "Pöstlingberg" hill, with its "Grottenbahn" (Small train into a grotto).

linz-hauptplatz-1.jpgpoestlingberg.jpg

Also the state shows a variety. From the rough climate in the northern Mühlviertel (named after the big number of mills) over the fields in Innviertel (named after the river Inn) and the industrial-cities of Linz, Wels, Steyr and Traun, you reach the North-Alps-Region of Salzkammergut with its lakes dating from the end of ice age.

The northern parts near the border to the Czech Republic often have very hard winters, like they did this year. Also, the special formed stones are proofs for the rough climate. The towns on the river Inn like Schärding and Obernberg are famous for their coloured houses - like the towns look like on the other side of the border in Bavaria. Very famous - and already well known by the Austrian Emperors - is the Salzkammergut-region with its lakes in the middle of the mountains. Bad Ischl is named the town of the Emperors, because they had their summer residence there. Also, like the name tells, the region at the borders to Salzburg and Styria, is known for the salt-mines. A UNESCO-World Heritage is the town of Hallstatt on the Hallstätter-See lake. In the bonehouse, the bones of the people, who died, are collected.

On our trip through Austria, I´ll take you to the only Austrian region, which has ever hold Olympic Games, today - to

The Tyrol - Tirol

with its capital Innsbruck. The Tyrol is famous for its majestic mountains and a loved destination for summer and winter holidays. Coming from Germany, you first arrive Kufstein with its castle throning over the river Inn. East of Kufstein is the region of Kitzbühel, with the annual Hahnenkamm-Worldcup races. This region - sometimes called the Monte Carlo of the Alps - is also home for the well-known "Stanglwirt" (landlord). Going to the east -the Inn-valley up - you pass the town of Rattenberg, which is the smallest "town" (~has the right of having municipal authorities) of Austria with 440 inhabitants. The "Achensee"-lake some hundred metres higher over sealevel than the Innvalley often is known as the coldest lake for swimming in summer. After passing the towns of Schwaz and Hall we arrive in Innsbruck. The Innvalley is frames by many mountains like the "Innsbrucker Nordkette" with the "Patscherkofel" skipists. The most famous places of the town are Maria Theresien Street, "Goldenes Dachl" (golden roof) and the Bergisel skijump. Bergisel is also a symbol for the struggles for freedom with Tyrols "hero" Andreas Hofer (1806-14).

Some kilometres to the south in direction Brenner and Italy, the highway goes over the "Europabrücke"-bridge, which was the highest bridge, when it was built 1959-1963, crossing the "Wipptal"-valley in 180metres high. The west of Tyrol is wll-known for the skitowns in the "Ötztal" and "Pitztal" valleys and in the Arlberg and Silvretta region.

A hard job was the building of the Arlbergbahn-railway-line, which connects Tyrol with Vorarlberg through a tunnel.

It´s time to reach the western end of Austria and welcome to

Vorarlberg:

This is the second smallest state, and the one with the less people. You have to pass the Arlberg-mountain or go through the Arlberg tunnel to reach the state from the Tyrol. The capital is Bregenz, which is known for its Festival at the "Seebühne" (Stage on the Lake). It´s near the three-countries border Germany-Switzerland-Austria in Bodensee (=Lake Constanz). In Bregenz you can go up the Pfänder-mountain by cable car. From there you have a wonderful view over Lake Constanz.

Vorarlberg is famous for its textil-industry and the cheese production in "Bregenzerwald" and Silvretta-mountain-area.

A nice town is Feldkirch on the border to Liechtenstein with its castle. Lustenau is the town with most inhabitants but without having the right of having municipal authorithies. The oppossite of Rattenberg in the Tyrol.

The mountain-areas of Silvretta and Arlberg are special parts. Lech am Arlberg is one of the most exlusive wintersport destination of Austria.

Unique is the "Kleinwalsertal"-valley. This valley with two villages can only be reached from Germany.

I didn´t have the time to show you more about Austria, but today I want to show you the southern part of Austria:

Kärnten - Carinthia:

Most of you will know the capital of Carinthia, which bid for the Olympic Wintergames 2006 - Klagenfurt. Carinthia is the summer tourism destination of Austria with its many lakes and the warm climate. On the other hand the highest mountain of Austria - the Großglockner (3797m) also is located in this state.

The capital of Klagenfurt is famous for its mystic "Lindwurm" creature, which is at the central place. The city is located at Lake Wörthersee. At the lake you find the "Minimundus" - a attraction, where important buildings of the world are built in miniature.

On the other end of Wörthersee, the noble tourism town Velden is located. It´s famous for beeing a very expensive region. Carinthia has two legendare Icehockey clubs in Klagenfurt, and with the current Champion in Villach, a town, which is visited by many Italians. A unique castle is north of Klagenfurt the "Burg Hochosterwitz". The "Großglockner Hochalpenstraße" road crosses the Austrian Central Alps at Großglockner. You have a wonderful view, if you come closer to the highest mountain and pass the village of Heiligenblut.

Carinthia has borders to Italy and Slovenia.

And here are some pictures:

Two more states are left, today I show you

Steiermark - Styria:

With nearly 250 000 inhabitants, the capital Graz is the second largest city of Austria. In 2003 the city was Culture Capital of Europe. The so called "Friendly Alien" - a museum looking very modern - and a architectural sensation - the Island in the River Mur were built. Famous is the "Schlossberg" clocktower. A bit bizare is the clock of the tower - the long hand shows the hours, while the short one shows the minutes. Looking town to the city from Schlossberg - hill, Graz looks a bit mediterranian. The citizens and students love to go to the green centre - "City Park". And "Green" is the color of Styria, because of the woods and fields. Styria goes from the lowlands in the southeast to the Alpine Dachstein mountain (~3000m) in the northwest. Round Dachstein, there are Styrias most famous ski regions with Schladming (Alpine Worldchampionsships and World Cup Races) and Ramsau (Nordic Worldchampionsships 1999). The "Gesäuse"-Valley and Nationalpark is known for its cannyon. In the northeast of the state the industry region of Leoben, Bruck and Kapfenberg, where above all steel is produced, is situated. The name of LD steel comes from "Linz-Donawitz" - because the Austrian company VOEST with centres in Linz (UpperAustria) and Leoben-Donawitz is one of the world´s best producer of steel.

The "Semmering"-railwayline connects Styria with Lower Austria and was the first Alpine Railway Line.

A contrast to the Alpine north is the south, with wine hills and often very dry summers. Also the thermal baths of this region have to be mentioned.

In the west, Piber is found. The town is famous for the "Lippizaner" Stud Farm.

The last state, which is left is the also the part, which came to Austria latest.

Burgenland

The state in the very east of Austria belonged to Hungary until 1919. Its capital is Eisenstadt - a very small capital, which looks like a village in some parts. Eisenstadt is famous for castle Esterhazy and was the hometown of the compositor Haydn. At "Neusiedler See" lake the stage of the "Mörbisch summer festival" is situated. It's beside of Salzburg and Bregenz one of the most famous festivals of Austria. The area around the lake is a UNESCO Wordl Heritage. You find many kinds of animals and flowers, there. The lowest point of Austria is situated at the eastern end of Neusiedler See near Andau with 115 meters over the sea. As the name "Burgenland" (Burg = castle) says, you find many castles there. The most known are castle Güssing, Forchtenstein and Bernstein.

Burgenland is also famous for its wonderful wine. In the south there are many thermal baths. As being at the border to Hungary, the economy suffers even today from the Cold War, but the situation becomes better, above all because of Hungary's EU-membership.

Last Sunday, the most important cultural event of Salzburg was opened: The Salzburg Summer Festival 2006. This year all 22 operas of Mozart are played. The other highlight is the annual "Jedermann" (Everyman) in front of the Cathedral. Wednesday "La nozze di Figaro" (Figaro´s marriage) had its premiere in the new built "House for Mozart". The opera was broadcasted in TV and at Kapitelplatz, where thousands of people watched the opera under the sky.
