It’s probably an arguable distinction, but while it’s certainly a revolutionary symbol, I’d say it’s stretching it to describe it as military. More a symbol of freedom, like a cockade, or at a stretch, of protest, like a gilet jaune. Rather than something militaristic like a bayonet or a pikelhaube.

Gotta say, now I’ve found out about the tribe aspect of them, I’m warming more. I think that’s clever. And also subtly French in a Smurfish kind of way…

Imagine the next German Olympics (ic that ever happens!) using a Pickelhaube :D

Smurfs are Belgian though!

Next you’ll be telling me Wiener Schnitzel isn’t German ;)

Considering it is originally Italian and from the next Winter host city, we can only guess what the 2026 mascot will look like…

One thing struck me - these mascots DO have a purpose beyond being just plushies. They actually could be worn, and I expect we may see them on spectators’ heads come games time. In which case, they may be a bit more visible than the average stuffed toy.

do you remember the vuvuzela at the world cup 2010 in south africa? it was a fad/rage/trend gone wrong with a lot of hatred for that instrument.. i hope that the same doesnt happen with this red-cock/comb-thing all red-coloured stands at the sports venues..

2024 is nothing elss than 2 things.. 1// the logo referee to the french revolution 2// the mascot musnt be an animal thus to break this trend and do solething innovative.. (in this context was izzy mich more approchable as a character.. it just doesn make sense as yoh get the answer 'is not an animal' but the first impression as a cock-comb is directly linked with an animal.. so at the end we have a product here, but i think (have the feeling)  that there will be also blue version of this when medal ceremonies are held.. at rio it was so simple and beautiful to reach out the curving-logo as a bibelot so much organic-and-modest.. (seen apart from vinicous)

paris 2024 goes about the SO MUCH NEEDED french-pride after a brexit and decreasing german-politics on the european continent.. 'centenaire en français' regering to 1924.. the symbolism doesnt stop but is also produces a lot arrogantism, sorry as the french arrogance can be.

finally the one/only good thing of this mascot is maybe that it looks like a HEART when you look upside down.. so they can make a decent link; that the olympians are in the heart of the olympics AND in de heart of paris as it will be the most inclusion-olympics of the new millenium

Looking at it as a tribe it is starting to grow on me. I don't think they are female, the article for Phryge is female. But since they are going with a tribe it is Les Phryes.

This give the option on making a varied of different types.

I think(if possible) when manufacturing plushies or toys that those with errors on the general should then be upgraded to a para. Eyes came out wrong sew on sunglasses.  You can have some with left leg or right leg prosthetics. If the wings/ ear covers, another color.

There was me thinking that they were paving the way for LA28 to have an AR-15 as a mascot!

I wonder what the carbon footprint for this "mascotte" will be when , of course, it would have to be made of, at least, durable felt cloth to hold up right.  Cheap, cotton fabric wouldn't work as a sub.

See the source image

And what's the production run going to be?  150,000 caps -- tout Fabrique en Chine??    All for a silly, misguided mascot.

Look at the very POLLUTING process of making felt cloth . . .

From my understanding it is from recycled material

Gotta admit, the little French buggers are really growing on me - possibly now my favourite Olympic mascots for a long, long time.

Could be, but it would still undergo so many industrial processes to get it into a useable state.  Yes, recycled would make it cheaper than using virgin wool.  I think anything costing more than 25 euros retail would not sell.  So, it would have to be made REALLY, REALLY cheap in order for COJO to even make a little money from it.

Phryge | Phrygia ^_^;)

>> in/direct new information from turkish soil

source: Phrygians - Wikipedia

The Phrygians (Greek: Φρύγες, Phruges or Phryges) were an ancient Indo-European speaking people, who inhabited central-western Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) in antiquity. They were related to the Greeks.[1]

Ancient Greek authors used "Phrygian" as an umbrella term to describe a vast ethno-cultural complex located mainly in the central areas of Anatolia rather than a name of a single "tribe" or "people", and its ethno-linguistic homogeneity is debatable.[2] Phrygians were initially dwelling in the southern Balkans – according to Herodotus – under the name of Bryges (Briges), changing it to Phryges after their final migration to Anatolia, via the Hellespont. However, the Balkan origins of the Phrygians are debated by modern scholars.[3][4]

Phrygia developed an advanced Bronze Age culture. The earliest traditions of Greek music are in part connected to Phrygian music, transmitted through the Greek colonies in Anatolia, especially the Phrygian mode, which was considered to be the warlike mode in ancient Greek music. Phrygian Midas, the king of the "golden touch", was tutored in music by Orpheus himself, according to the myth. Another musical invention that came from Phrygia was the aulos, a reed instrument with two pipes.

In classical Greek iconography Paris, a Trojan, is represented as non-Greek by his Phrygian cap, which was also worn by Mithras and survived into modern imagery as the "Liberty cap" of the American and French revolutionaries.

Phrygians spoke the Phrygian language, a member of the Indo-European linguistic family. Modern consensus regards Greek as its closest relative

As I anticipated . . .

Government admit China has to manufacture Paris 2024 mascots as no capacity (insidethegames.biz)

I wonder if they even test-marketed the idea with children focus groups.  I think only the bulls in Spain and the Auvergne will be excited by these red blobs.

Do these 2 "sister" caps even have names?

I just dread what the torch and the cauldron will look like.  Turds 2024?

Ah so, the mascottes are to be looked at as "dolls" rather than be worn as the caps that they are supposed to be.  I'm surprised Paris 2024 didn't go with Jerry Lewis doll (left) and Dean Martin, right, for the Paras!

See the source image

There are supposed to be Jerry Lewis "vomit" dolls.

I like the idea behind the mascots in the sense that they are showing french culture and history. I got the same feeling that I did with London 2012 when they mascots were released. I was confused but I laughed. The Phrygges look like something out of a Pixar film like Finding Nemo. I like how it's different from the usual animal/creature choice. They could have given the mascot designs some distinction by colouring them in Red and Blue, for example, which obviously alludes to the colours of the French flag. Imagine if the Paris 2024 merchandising team thought it would be fun to make the phrygges wearable like the inspiration behind the mascots. Although an avant-garde choice, well done Paris 2024.
