Paris 2024's Official Mascot

Didn’t we already get a strong hint that the mascot will be a hat?

Speculation is growing that the mascot for Paris 2024 could take the form of a hat similar to that worn during the time of the French Revolution.\

The Sports Business Club website claims to have seen drawings which suggest that it might resemble the red "Liberty" cap worn during the late 18th century.

"We want a mascot that is a little different from what has been done in the past,"

I don't have much hopes for 2024 mascot to be honest. Specially after the article Rols shared.

I've gained a sense of impeding doom whenever someone says stuff like "We want to do things different". Last time someone said that was for the atrotious Beijing 2022 cauldron.

I found of the finalist designs for the mascot of Paris 2024, not only an Olympic Mascot, but also Paralympic mascot. They were designed by Hey Gee. These proposed mascots are young roosters. Their names are "Toufeu" The Olympic Mascot and "Touflamm" the Paralympic Mascot.

Not particulary fond of the Calarts/Corporate Memphis style, in all honesty, mostly since its been done to death. Plus its too reminiscing of Rio 2016 mascot style.

France is known for having many talented artists in both animation and comics and I would love to see these represented. But if the rumours about going for a revolutionary hat are real I think we might have a 2012 tier mascot for 2024. I guess they want to compete in weirdness with London.

According to the roadmap (from the leaked Look of the Games video of some days ago), the design of the mascot is pretty much finished. Only some stuff like the poses, styleguide and guidelines about its usage is left. But it seems we will know the mascot pretty soon.

Something i've noticed of the most recent tweet. While they're using the neutral "it" pronoun in english, they're using "Elle" in the french description, which is a female pronoun (I understand "Iel" is the gender neutral pronoun in french).

It seems very likely the main Olympic mascot might be a girl this time. Which might fit with the overall logo/Marianne concept.

I think it is mainly because in French "mascotte" is feminine but as one might say "we shall see".

Yeah, I don't know much about french language so fact checking from someone who knows it is always appreciated.

Anyway, a brief review of the last two french Olympic mascots

Shuss, a little sticky man figure who was Grenoble'68 mascot.

Magique, a cute little elf/star creature wearing winter outfit, who was Albertville '92 mascot.

Honorable mention: The Savoie chamois who was the original mascot of the 1992 WOG before it was replaced by Magique

All of them had something in common: Heavy use of the french Tricolore. Seems Paris 2024 mascot won't be any different in that regard.

They're certainly very quaint, but at least very expressive. I like the idea of the mascot not being a single entity but rather a collective of many characters (the Phryge's Tribe), the Golden Duo being the titular ones. Both of them are also female, which is also a first in the Olympics.

Its one of those things you like them the more you see them, but like most cases they work infinitely better in 2D than in 3D. There is a lot of lore/detail about them in the official website.

In my mind I made the mistake of reading it out phonetically and I will never not think of them as the Olympic and Paralympic fridges  They're cute, so they work - they remind me of the blobs BBC3 had when it started. The 2D ones work much better, makes me think of Asterix*

*Should've been him...

I think when I saw them last night it was a bit anti-climactic. We knew about them being hats for the best part of a year already now. The only suspense was if the leaks had been wrong - I personally thought there was still a chance for a French cock.

Now, having mulled over them - and now seen the extra images posted here (thanks @Ikarus360), I haven’t exactly warmed to them, but starting to get some positive vibes.

One thing struck me - these mascots DO have a purpose beyond being just plushies. They actually could be worn, and I expect we may see them on spectators’ heads come games time. In which case, they may be a bit more visible than the average stuffed toy.

I do think they work better as a tribe than as standalone entities. An Olympic version of Smurf’s or Minions. I may have to use that aspect in my usual mascots signature banner.

A parting thought - don’t know whether to be pleased that the French are so embracing their rebellious reputation and history. Or a bit uneasy that they’re suborning and commoditising it.
