A lot can change till next year. If Sapporo is still in, I would reckon a double award would be in order.

Also Calgary could in theory come back (wasn't there some noise about this a few weeks back?)

Sapporo has not withdrawn …. yet, but the bid is on life support.

The IOC have cancelled their visit to Sapporo and so that indicates that continuous dialogue has ground to a halt.

The problem is that the bribery/sponsorship scandal is still unfolding.  They still don’t know the full extent of it as the investigation proceeds and gets messier.

With 7 years to go next year until the 2030 Games, Sapporo will run out of time, it’s that simple.

No, there most definitely will not be a double awarding of the winter games.

The IOC President said this himself recently.

That was when there was more than 2 bids...

No.

It is to do with his term as the IOC President due to finish in 2025 and he wants to leave the 2034 host choice under the watch of the next IOC President

There will be no double awarding of the 2030 and 2034 Winter Hosts.

I still think Sapporo could host 2030 and Salt Lake City for 2034.

Yes, that still remains a possibility, but the 2030 and 2034 hosts will most definitely not be awarded at the same time.  The IOC President has already this not going to happen.

Future Host Commission is meeting on Dec 6, some time between 9 AM and 4 PM Central European Time, and Bach will deliver his press conference the following day, tentatively scheduled for 2 PM CET.

It is my understanding that the situation with India's NOC f****ed the timeline for the 2030 bid process, but maybe something interesting can come out of next week's EB meetings.

I’m wondering if the IOC Presidentvmight make an announcement of say Sapporro and/or SLC being elevated to Targeted Dialogue for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games at that 7 December media conference?

Possible Timelines around 2030  to be presented Tuesday  06.12.2022 to IOC Executive Board

At 25:28 in the press conference, is a journalist’s question around timelines and if 2030 Targeted Dialogue will be announced this meeting or in the Mumbai 27-28 May 2023 IOC Executive Board ?

Christophe Rubi responds by saying that the Future Host Commission Report on the 2030 Olympic Games will be presented to the IOC Executive Board Tuesday 6 December 2022 and the press will learn of the outcome on Wednesday 7 December 2022.

Further,  Christophe Dubi said that today, Tuesday 6 December 2022, possible timelines around the 2030 Games will be presented to the IOC Executive Board.

  • the three interested parties in Continuous Dialogue (Sapporo, Salt Lake City and Vancouver) have been informed today of these IOC EB discussion.

Award 2032 in 2021, then wait until probably 2025 to award 2030...ok

Reading between the lines, I strongly suspect they're going to use the coming couple of years to come up with a rotation pool to announce all from 2030-whenever the pool runs out in one go. I'm not sure why they'd mention that if that wasn't a fairly serious plan.

Interesting too that the warming climate is causing a seismic shift in everything Winter Olympics - as it should as the climate is warming.

I think that the 2030 host will be elected in 2024, with 2023 being for further discussion and consideration of these issues, such as potentially having a pool of Winter Games hosts.

Double awarding 2030 and 2034? think the odds of this happening has just shortened.

I’m so glad the IOC has the luxury of taking this decision calmly and slowly after the urgency they faced to lock in 2032

IKR! The irony of that makes the IOC appear more shady than they already are. Especially when the double-talk is back on-the-table now (I don't think it was ever off anyway), despite Bach downplaying that aspect back in the summer.

Taking this to 2024/25 could in theory reopen the door for a German 2030 bid looking at DOSB‘s own timelines. IN THEORY, I said.

Considering a dual 30-34 award could be on the table, they might very well want to throw their hat in.

… assuming that meets the approval of Bavarian farmers, of course

So, let's see what our potential 5-nation rotation looks like...  Munich, SLC, Sapporo, Vancouver, and ???  Almaty?  Oslo?  Milan?

Those would have to be cities using student dorms for the OV -- not new construction each time.  For North America, there would only be 3: SLC, Calgary and Vancouver.
It's a wild guess for all the others; I don't know what appetite Japan and So, Korea would have as the Asian rep.  Then, it would only be between No America and Europe:  maybe Lillehammer?  the IOC would have to invest a couple of billions to resurrect Sarajevo.  And either Lausanne or Innsbruck as the Alpine rep.

That's a new angle... make it fit with the German timeline to say to Munich 'vote yes, you're guaranteed '. Between Munich, Sapporo and SLC, do we have the potential beginnings of our "rotation pool"?

Given climate change, German Alps venues will sooner than later struggle with that „temperature over 10 years“ criteria, anything beyond the 2030s may very well be unsustainable here.

2030 will definitely only be out of Sapporo, Salt Lake City and Vancouver already in Continuous Dialogue and elected in 2024, a bare minimum 6 years before the Games.  That’s what he means by “later”.

Clearly not enough time to consult widely, discuss, research, set-up, short-list, recommend and elect Winter Games Pool Hosts until well past the 2030 Host Election.
