GBModerator
A working group report outlining and evaluating the proposals from four prospective 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games bids was released by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Tuesday, indicating the projects have varying levels of support and preparedness. The IOC confirmed the Executive Board’s decision to move forward with three cities including Calgary, Stockholm and Milan-Cortina, […] The post IOC Working Group Report Shows Strongest Support In Italy; Confirms Erzurum Had Planned To Use Venues In Sochi appeared first on GamesBids.com. FYI
Wow, that’s a strong showing for Milan. But no surprise that the weakest show of support is the Swedish bid, & ironically enough it’s the one the IOC wants. In previous (battle royale) bid cycles that would’ve been the weakest link bid. Isn’t it funny the turn of the tide now. If the IOC is smart though (which is prob too much to ask), they would be working to try & take advantage of that strong Italian support. And go figure that Erzurum had the strongest support of them all. As for Calgary, talk about on-the-fence support, which in reality, still isn’t very convincing. Nacre
The Italian support will likely evaporate when the Milanese are told they will have to pay 1.5-2 billion euros to build three new arenas and a speed skating rink.
stryker
IMO, all these support numbers are inflated especially the Italian bid (I suspect this was done to try to nudge the government into providing the needed financial support). It reminds me of when the Democrats and Republicans conduct internal polling. It always results in over-inflated numbers. And yes I think once the numbers start coming out on how much more expensive the Milan-Cortina bid will be compared to what the costs could have been with Turin in the race, that you will see public support drop. I really don't see how Milan-Cortina can get this bid funded without money from Rome.

Nacre
Yes. In fairness Italy's unemployment rate is now down to under 10%. If the Italians really want to fund all of this then they could find the money. But that's not the issue. Do the Milanese, Lombards and Italians in general want to pay for a lot of white elephants? Milan has one arena suitable for figure skating and would have to build two more arenas for ice hockey, another for curling and then a speed skating rink. All of those will likely lose lots of money. Just like the working classes in revolt everywhere else in the western world, the northern Italian man and woman on the street would rather use their money on themselves than hand it over to the construction firms that make campaign contributions to local politicians.
