Beijing 2022 launches Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games mascots design competition

Beijing 2022 today launched an international competition for the designs of the mascots for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

As a part of the competition, people from around the world are invited to submit original designs for the emblematic ambassadors.

Designers can submit their proposals from 20 to 31 October 2018, either in person or via mail. The designs should embody the Olympic and Paralympic values, reflect Chinese culture and affirm the vision of the 2022 Games.

The launch of the competition fell on a fitting date, with 8 August marking a decade since the opening of the Olympic Games in 2008. In addition to the mascot design launch, the 10-year anniversary included sports demonstrations and various exhibitions, providing a setting to celebrate the legacies of Beijing 2008 while looking ahead to Beijing 2022.

Designing mascots will take a youthful turn in September, when elementary and secondary school students across China will have the chance to create their own mascots for the Games in art classes as a part of Beijing 2022’s Olympic Education Programme.

The winner is expected to be announced in the second half of 2019.

Bach: Launch of mascot an important milestone for Beijing 2022

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- IOC President Thomas Bach says Tuesday's unveiling of the official mascot for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be a significant moment for China.

"That's an important milestone, because the people will have something to identify with and I think it will be a great event tomorrow. I'm sure that all Chinese people will love this mascot," said Bach at the Pierre De Coubertin Medal Awarding Ceremony for Fan Yang, a Chinese artist who has contributed to the Olympic movement through his sport-themed artwork.

A two-month project themed "Beijing 2022 mascots in my eyes" was launched to encourage elementary and secondary school students from across China to create their own mascots for the Games. Nearly 15 million students from 45,000 schools were involved in the project.

"We are looking into the future, into the future of the Olympic Games and the Olympic movement. And we get great feedback about how the young generation is looking at the Olympic Games and how much they love and embrace the Olympic Games. So it's very symbolic," added Bach.

IMO Soohorang left big shoes to fill, even for Miraitowa (even though the later is slowly getting more popular in Japan). Let's see what China comes up with.

Bing Dwen Dwen sure sold like hotcakes in China.

I remember someone (was it Rob?) posted an article on here stating that most of the Curling audience left their seats for the souvenir shop when it opened that day. So well, probably yes.
