yoshi
BBC 5 live's presenter is annihilating the Russian language, which can only mean that it is time to get going - discuss the opening ceremony & match 1 of 64 right here
yoshi
Robbie Williams has appeared - this is a sign that we have started, apparently.
zigzag
What do you think of the opening ceremony folks?
yoshi
Very odd & hectic - and a nagging feeling that we'd suddenly woken up in 2001.
zigzag
And we have our first goal folks!
yoshi
And our first example of how VAR is going to kill the feeling of this tournament...if the fabled Russian hackers want to use their powers for good, disable the VAR system
Durban Sandshark
Cheryshev scores for Russia making it 2-0!
Durban Sandshark
3-0 thanks to Dzyuba from Golovin's good assist. Russia's gonna need win this over the lowest-ranked team in this. IDT even Bert Van Marwijk would've saved the Saudis...
Durban Sandshark
That's it! 4-0 for Russia and their fans. From Cheryshev again in extra time. Great start for them!
Durban Sandshark
5-0 now! Putin must be grinning with this game at Luzhniki Stadium. Golovin scores at 90+5 on a free kick. Not as bad as it was when Germany demolished the Saudis 7-1 in Sapporo, Japan inside the Sapporo Dome back in 2002. Still, that's a little embarassing. Game over! Russia's happy! yoshi
Probably the most convincing argument against expansion of the tournament ever made - they actually qualified. It's always good for the tournament to have the host start well though - & Saudi are still higher ranked than Qatar :p
Durban Sandshark
More importantly Saudi Arabia has more World Cup appearances behind them than Qatar. Hadn't been in a World Cup lately. Even in 2002, they were weak. Only now starting to submit players to foreign pro leagues. Just a few.
Ikarus360
Russia trashing KSA shouldn't be surprising. What's surprising is KSA still qualifying and making these embarassments, given the Russian team is actually somewhat average. Also that opening ceremony was just a glorified Robbie Williams concert. As bad or worse than 2014 world cup. You can tell FIFA doesn't even let the host country have more creativity with their shows.
Sir Rols
Sh!t! Kick-off already! I thought it was Friday night. Okay, give me about an hour to do the second chance sweep draw. Someone’s gonna start with an automatic win for Russia and loss for Arabia. Oh well, them’s the breaks of a sweep.

I think the South Africa 2010 had the best Opening & Closing Ceremonies of WC so far. Of course, the Closing was at night, so that made it very dramatic.
