Palette86
Quote Public barred from 2020 Olympic flame lighting in Greece Spectators will be kept away from the Olympic flame-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia on Thursday because of the coronavirus. Only 100 accredited guests will be allowed to attend the traditional event, Greece’s Olympic committee said Monday. A dress rehearsal on Wednesday for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic flame will also be closed to the public to comply with Greek government restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus. The Tokyo organizing committee said it will “reduce the size of its traveling delegation as much as possible.” Tokyo officials previously said they would not send 140 children to Greece to give the flame a send-off next week on its journey to Japan. Ikarus360
Despite this torch relay will be heavily toned down due to Corona, I still want to try to follow it as much as possible. Let's hope for the best. Today was the big day and the ritual was held in Olympia. With no public besides the officials, of course.

baron-pierreIV
Well, they invited Gerard "King Leonidas" Butler to run the Torch in Sparta yesterday. Of course, LARGE CROWDS gathered. I mean who wouldn't want to see the buffed King Leonidas there (altho he was in a track suit? And then, of course, they cancelled the whole Torch Relay now! The management of the Torch Relay so far could not have been worse if the Douchebag-45 administration had handled it! I wonder what will happen to the normally 300-400 torches that are allotted to the Greek portion of the Relay? W)ill those be popping up as mint specimens on eBay soon! Watch Butler scream THIS IS TOKYO 2020! on the clip here: https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1091871/greek-torch-relay-cancelled! (The bald guy behind him is actor Billy Zane (of TITANIC fame) whose family apparently came from the Sparta area, too! The flame was then scheduled to stop by the Thermopylae monument! I have tears in my eyes now because I visited the Thermopylae site in 2010!) TorchbearerSydney
Would be nice to keep it burning in Japan, before it resumes in a years time....symbolically the Olympic fire has arrived in the host country and is still alive...just on pause. Palette86
Quote Olympic flame to travel Japan without torch relay NHK has learned that the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee has decided not to hold a torch relay, but will instead use a lantern to carry the Olympic flame across Japan. Officials close to the matter say the committee decided that the torch relay won't come until it reaches a final conclusion with the International Olympic Committee on whether or not to postpone the Games. The flame is expected to travel across Japan after being transferred to a lantern. The officials say the committee made the decision, taking into consideration that it started discussions with the IOC about the Tokyo 2020 Games, including possible postponement. The decision is also aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus as the torch relay would draw a large crowd of people along the course. The Olympic flame was lit in Greece on March 12 and arrived in Japan on Friday. The flame will travel across the country, starting in Fukushima on Thursday, after being displayed in Fukushima and two other prefectures in northeastern Japan that were devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The organizing committee plans to scale-down the Olympic flame ceremony in Fukushima and hold it without spectators. olympiaki-agones
Well, I found out the flame will be kept lit in Fukushima prefecture. That'll be better than just watching the lantern passing by with no spectators around, but behind window glasses.

Palette86
Quote Tokyo Olympic torch relay to still traverse Japan's 47 prefectures The Tokyo Games organizing committee confirmed Tuesday that the domestic leg of next year's Olympic torch relay will pass through 859 municipalities across Japan's 47 prefectures, the same as planned before the games were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers revealed in a press conference that only minor changes in order were made to the 121-day route, set to begin on March 25, 2021, at the J-Village soccer training center in Fukushima Prefecture. Some 10,000 torchbearers are still expected to take part. A ceremony to mark 100 days until the relay's start will be held later Tuesday at Tokyo Skytree, a major tourist spot in the capital. Amid concerns over the relay drawing large crowds and increasing the risk of infection, the Japanese government is considering countermeasures such as excluding celebrities from running. Organizers are calling on roadside spectators to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and avoid the "three Cs" -- confined spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings. After its nationwide tour, the flame will arrive at Tokyo's National Stadium and be used to light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony on July 23 next summer. The flame for the Tokyo Olympics was lit behind closed doors in ancient Olympia, Greece, on March 12. The Greek leg of the torch relay was called off a day later over concerns of spreading the virus amid the escalating outbreak. The Japanese leg of the relay was originally scheduled to start on March 26 in Fukushima before the unprecedented decision was made two days earlier to postpone the games for one year amid the global pandemic. The flame arrived in Japan on March 20 and has remained in the host country ever since while occasionally being shown to the public. Palette86
Quote Tokyo mulls taking Olympic torch relay off roads also in 2nd half The Tokyo metropolitan government is moving toward taking the Olympic torch relay off public roads also in the second half of the 15-day leg in the capital, due to a surge in coronavirus infections, an official familiar with the planning said Monday. The metropolitan government said last week that the relay, scheduled to begin Friday, will not be staged on roads in Tokyo, excluding its small island areas, on the first eight days, adding it would decide on the format for the latter half of the event in the not-so-distant future.
