This isn't connected to Birmingham directly, but @GBModerator what happened to the live chat threads from the Gold Coast ceremonies? I idly wanted to reread the reaction from the closing disaster but the threads don't seem to be there anymore...this is odd, nothing's usually deleted :( Thank you!

How disrespectful and rude of you. Show some respect.

He was a President of the Commonwealth Games and has opened more Commonwealth Games' than any other person. He deserves to be honoured for the role he played in the Commonwealth Games.

I also hope there is a nod to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee as well.

He's only making a harmless joke. The Duke does rightly deserve respect, but even he himself often set up those jokes because it was in his nature to be a little mischievous and not to take himself too seriously.

I'd be fine with the army doing what they did at London 2012. That failure was a blessing in disguise. Just cut to the chase and get them in again.

Irrespective of whether they come from Britain, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. One thing that professional soldiers hate is being disrespected by being misused and abused by civil authorities as dog's bodies to perform menial tasks for the community. During the Games they'll have their hands full with all facets of security (stadium security sweeps between sessions, thoroughly checking ALL vehicles entering Games zones, VIP escorts, honour guards etc.), VIP cheuffering, ceremonial tasks including salute party's and flag raising, and emergency response teams. In addition these troops would likely be accommodated in tentage at nearby military bases or camps supported by their own field catering, medical support and transport. For Comm Games the bulk of these will likely be Territorials (UK Reservists) who have probably been in training for weeks. The higher end security response during the games would be managed by Special Forces and RAF in conjuction with Britain's MI agencies and Birmingham Police.

Here we are again!

In a new thread for a new ceremony!

It's been incredible how fast these 4 years went by ... and I still cannot watch a full version of the Gold Coast Opening Ceremony, which was one of the best ceremonies of that 2018. And I have never seen anything of the Closing Ceremony...

Now, the preparations for #Birmingham2022 are on their way:

Went to Birmingham last week before it got hot, a lot of the city dressing is up and you can see the temporary venues in Smithfield. The BBC/megastore thing is also coming on, although it really does make a mess of Centenary Square. Anyone know how to get your own pictures on here?

All you need is a third party image host like another social media forum or an online free picture host (take your pick). One the image(s) are stored there all you need is the URL link to the images which you insert into this forum by using the "Insert image from URL" button at the bottom right of you message window whilst posting your message.

If Birmingham can put on the same brilliant games as Manchester did 20 years (Gosh, has it been 20 years?) ago, then no doubt Birmingham will shine.

They will. As they did 10 years ago in London...

2002 - Manchester

2012 - London

2022 - Birmingham

2032 - ????

Thanks @RooBlu, will check that out tomorrow. In news news, BBC coverage revealed:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/mediapacks/birmingham-2022-commonwealth-games-on-the-bbc

It's how you'd expect so it's not a surprise, but it's good to see there'll be a heavy focus on Birmingham and the Midlands in the surrounding programming - it's an underrated city and region that gets overlooked in the north/south slanging match. According to a post on the forum I got the link from, the opening ceremony will run from 7pm-10:30, so mostly in daylight. Hopefully they've taken inspiration from the handover flashmob (you know, the good bit) to show you can still have a spectacle even if it's not dark - could be quite refreshing.

I suspect that a lot of great UK cities such as Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool have struggled to shake off their Industrial Age images. A lot of work has gone into reinventing these cities beyond heavy industry and the Games puts a spotlight on them in a positive sense to hopefully promote future tourism and growth.

Looking forward to this...a real Games for the first time since GC 2018. No Fencing 1976 plus tickets are selling fast.

Channel 7 is doing their coverage from a studio rather than in Brum itself. 10 did Glasgow in the IBC in Glasgow back in 2014.

What about Lima 2019? They were the last "TRUE" Games... anyway... things have changed a bit from then.... I think ceremonies will follow the "simplicity" tendency, taken to its fullest in Tokyo Olympics OC...
