At a special Media Conference staged at the Arena Academy school in Birmingham, CGF President Louise Martin CBE applauded the city’s ambitious and innovative vision to engage and benefit its local community, showcase the best of global Britain and warmly welcome and inspire athletes and fans from right across the Commonwealth. Birmingham 2022, which is expected to take place from 27 July – 7 August 2022, marks 20 years since Manchester 2002, the last time the Games were held in England. http://mailchi.mp/thecgf/commonwealth-games-federation-selects-birmingham-as-host-city-partner-of-the-2022-commonwealth-games
yoshi
Host city partner?! What is this, W1A? Whatever, good on Brum - in England most of the sporting publicity, attention, etc either goes down to London or up to Manchester/Liverpool so it's good to see something go to the bit in the middle
Rob2012
Birmingham has a real opportunity here as it'll be THE big event of the Summer with the World Cup not being played till December.

Rob2012
Just occurred to me, they've not got long to sort something for the handover!
intoronto
Track cycling will take place in London. Also no shooting, which is good news for Canada.
yoshi
Why not Derby? There's a perfectly good velodrome/arena in Derby. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derby_Arena
thatsnotmypuppy
Capacity. Derby Arena - 1,700 in velodrome mode. Lee Valley VeloPark - 6,750. Track cycling is popular so quite rightfully they are opting for the bigger venue.

Dunno...Watched QEII's Christmas speech last night and noticed that she was "slipping"... Would be a miracle if she made it, Prince Phillip will be gone by then. If Brum can pull off anything like Manchester '02 then that would be brilliant. '02 is one of the best CWGs ever held. Venue sharing with other centres is fine, especially that Birmingham is hamstrung by three years lost preparation time.
Mr Tickle
I was just thinking this and realised Rob had posted the same thing in December. But they have a really short time to pull together the hand over segment. Will they launch a logo? Anybody seen anything? The website hasn't been updated since before they were awarded the games, so that worries me. So I think we should give them some help, some ideas. I think they need to play Hello, Goodbye by the Beatles. Bloody perfect apart from the Liverpool link (sorry Liverpool, but maybe a nice nod to them at the same time) Then give all the audience those foam hands with the new logo on to wave. The ceremony will be televised worldwide as part of the closing of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on 15 April. Birmingham was officially named the host for the 2022 Games in December, following a number of setbacks. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) initially deemed the city's bid was "not fully compliant". Organisers are planning a "mass participation dance" for the handover event, and are seeking to recruit 2,022 dancers, aged 16-25, from the local area. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-43306351?ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbc_england&ns_source=twitter&ns_linkname=english_regions
yoshi
Handover ceremony IN Birmingham, televised as part of the closing ceremony plus way more performers than anyone would fly to Gold Coast....the handover sounds like it'll be an overgrown T-Mobile advert :/
Mr Tickle
There will be a film by Daniel Alexander and Rapper Lady Sanity who I can honestly say I've never heard of. I am reserving judgement for now. Culture Central are organising it. I visited their website for a moment and got bored. Fingers crossed it will be amazing! Ikarus360
I can't be too critic, considering the hosting of the 2022 games was a complete nightmare with the original host city resigning and Birmingham being picked as the new host not too long ago. I hope they can do the best they can for the handover.
mattygs
Sounds like a Manchester 2002 handover rehash. Replace concert with a mass dance routine.
Mr Tickle
I wasn't hopeful about the Birmingham handover at all. I thought the short notice would be the excuse but the pictures Im seeing from Birmingham city centre look great. Im not a fan of Lady Sanity, but the Floozy in the Jacuzzi has had a make over, there are banners going up everywhere, it could actually be a good segment. It will be interesting to see how they switch between the stadium in Australia and Birmingham but I'm quite excited now
Rob2012
RE: #Brum I only saw the highlights show on the BBC last night, and from what I can work out from the CC thread they didn't show a rap and a dance segment. They did show the short promo video and the big finale in the square.... The promo video was pretty rubbish, less said the better, but I was smiling throughout the live bit in the square. It was the right side of fun without being cringe-worthy (unlike the Glasgow ceremonies which tried to hit the same note but mostly missed imo). I think the fad of having huge floor projections in (particularly) Olympic ceremonies (since Sochi really) has meant a human element has been missing. Whether deliberate or not, it was refreshing to see that back here. Yes, it looked a little ropey (it was one camera and a drone I think), but that sort of added to its charm. yoshi
^Completely agree - the flash mob bit was, if a bit clichéd, much better than I expected it to be, & better that the Glasgow opening sequence (its nearest comparison?) The rap bits were meh, & the video was head-in-hands stuff (it put forward most of the images I thought they wanted to get away from - & where was modern Birmingham's symbol, the library?) But if the Victoria Square bit was well received, I wonder if they'll consider a daylight/dusk opening ceremony, say 7-10pm?
adrianme17
really enjoyed the flash mob in victoria square - camera work and production was flawless - sham there were no blue skies - lol!
Rob2012
It wasn't raining and we didn't get a third instalment of The Beast From The East. A month ago if you said to organisers it'd be a little bit grey they'd have definitely taken that I reckons!

She's only 91 years old, she'll be 96 in 2022 and the Queen Mother didn't die until she was 101. I could see her still being around. And you're right. It's smart for them to use existing venues, even if they're in London. It ensures the Olympic Park is used again, and spreads the excitement of the event. It's also just cost-effective.

Rob2012
Quote CGF Coordination Commission confident in Birmingham 2022 preparations Following the conclusion of its two day visit to Birmingham, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission has expressed its confidence in the preparations for the 2022 Games. The Coordination Commission (CoCom) is tasked with monitoring Games delivery to scope, schedule and budget with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness. On what was their second visit to the West Midlands, the CoCom conducted site visits to key venues for the Games including the Athletes' Village in Perry Barr, where construction is underway, and the Alexander Stadium, which is set for a £70 million investment to transform it from its current capacity of 12,700 to up to 40,000. The CoCom also heard a number of presentations from the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee and partners on areas including sport, transport, security and brand. There was a particular focus on capital builds with construction currently on track with the Athletes’ Village, Sandwell Aquatics Centre and Alexander Stadium. Following the visit, CGF CoCom Chair Chris Jenkins said: “We have been really impressed with preparations for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and feel that the Organising Committee is in very good shape. “We could clearly see a very strong collaboration between all the partners working on the event and that bodes very well for the athletes, coaches and support staff that we will see at the Games. “There is also a strong emphasis on community engagement which will help showcase the many long-term benefits for the people of the region. “The big challenge remains time and there is no time to lose given the shortened window Birmingham have had to prepare for the Commonwealth Games compared to other host cities. “With just over three years to go, getting everything ready in record time will remain a challenge but the Commission has every confidence that the partnership will deliver a fantastic Games in 2022 for the West Midlands.” More @ https://thecgf.com/news/cgf-coordination-commission-confident-birmingham-2022-preparations
