Any news on who's doing the Beijing 2022 handover?

Zhang Yimou is already in South Korea preparing for the Handover, as he already gave out a couple of hints of what to expect

Apparently, he wants this time to focus on a futuristic/technological angle for the handover, saying it will be different from other performances as he wants to make use of technological and modern elements. 

Kind of sounds like the Tokyo 2020 handover....I guess China wants to make their answer to Tokyo's 8 minutes show in Rio.

They want to focus on the new and upcoming China, not old China. In summary, they say since Beijing 2008 was not too long ago, many still remember the presentation of the 5,000 years of Chinese history, so there is no need to do it again and be repetitive. They say they will blend high technology with traditional elements, all centered around winter sports.

 

I think this is a good idea, as Beijing 2008 had amazing ceremonies but if attempted again, they would likely end up close to Nagano (that is, assuming China leaves the technology behind). I think it will be good for China to use this opportunity to present itself on the world stage as a growing technological hub, while intertwining their history. It could also be a direct answer to Tokyo's handover, and then another answer in 2022 to Tokyo's 2020 Opening Ceremony, but either way I'm excited for it.

Totally agree! This coming handover will contrast with all what PyeongChang has done, and approaching Tokyo's standards. I like these sort of showing off contests. Three Olympic editions in a row will bring that, hi-tech rather than warm hospitable environment.

I got curious and watched this last night and then subsequently watched the 2008 OC. This handover is definitely my favorite, with Tokyo's coming at a close second. I am VERY excited for Beijing's handover, I cannot even imagine how grand it will be!

I know this is unrelated, but shouldn't we change already the icon of the Beijing 2022 subforum now that Pyeongchang is going to pass the flag to them in just some days? They unveiled their new logo last December and we still have the bid one showing on the index.

On our forum we still have the candidate logo. Official emblem was unveiled less than 2 months before PyeongChang 2018 began. The PC2018 logo was unveiled in May 2013 9 months before Sochi 2014 began.

Zhang Yimou is already at Pyeongchang. Just like the ceremonies producers, he's mostly worried about the unpredictable weather.

Apparently the segment will be called "Eight Minutes in Beijing". According to this article, like we already knew, he wants to show up the advancements of China on the recent years since 2008.

The WOC might be coming to a close, but the Winter Paralympic is coming up. We are in Pyeongchang for a few more weeks.

I like how it feels little bit like Tokyo presentation high tech presentation minus typical Japanese pop culture. I really liked those transparent screen, if i'm not mistaken those are transparent OLED displays.

....so there was quite expensive hardware moving on the scene  or else it's some glass projections.

But you can also feel Beijing 2008 opening in it, so we probably gonna get another high budget big memorable opening ceremony again

I liked when the OLED displays also shown some neon light-ish displays of China nature/fauna/landmarks, even though they were a bit hard to notice, but it was there. 

Like it was said on the livechat it seems Tokyo 2020 raised the bar high when it comes to handovers to the point Zhang Yimou took a couple of notes of it.

Beijing Takes Over Olympic Flag at Closing Ceremony of PyeongChang 2018

PYEONGCHANG, February 25, 2018 – South Korea bid farewell to athletes from around the world at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium tonight in a spectacular closing ceremony to conclude the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

 

Towards the end of the ceremony, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC）handed the Olympic flag to Chen Jining, Mayor of Beijing, marking an important milestone in the preparations for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

Beijing 2022 then put on a short artistic performance under the theme of ‘See You in Beijing in 2022,’ directed by world-renowned film director Zhang Yimou, who also directed the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.

The show centred on the talents of a group of 24 roller-skating performers from Beijing Sport University, the number 24 representing the XXIV Olympic Winters Games to be held in Beijing. The performers skated together in perfect formation wearing specially-designed clothing covered from head-to-toe in LEDs. Led by two performers dressed as ‘Panda Captains,’ the remaining 22 were joined on the centre stage in an interactive, synchronized performance by 24 transparent, high-definition ‘ice screens’ mounted on ‘automated guided vehicles’ (AGVs).

The performance delved into China’s ancient past, tapping into the country’s rich cultural heritage while also paying tribute to the present, as well as the future that lies ahead. In addition to references to traditional elements including the Great Wall and auspicious mythical animals like the Chinese long (Chinese dragon) and the Chinese phoenix, the performance also showcased China’s recent engineering and technological feats, such as its extensive high-speed rail network and its space program.

Towards the end of the performance, the Olympic rings appeared on the stage, as well as images of a global village, smiling children’s faces, olive branches and plum blossoms, symbolising China’s commitment to promoting global peace and building a better future for mankind. Finally, the skaters travelled a path to draw the ‘Winter Dream’ emblem of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

The show concluded with the transformation of the centre stage into an Internet data tunnel and the ‘uploading’ of the ‘Panda Captains,’ who then appeared as cuddly ‘Panda Messenger’ avatars on the overhead screens before travelling through the tunnel to Beijing and other places in China, collecting invitations for the world to come for Beijing 2022 in four years’ time.

The invitations included one from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who said: “Together with all the Chinese people, I welcome friends from all over the world. See you in Beijing in 2022. A warm welcome to you all. A warm welcome to our friends.”

The ‘Panda Messengers’ returned through the tunnel to the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium with a large envelope, which opened to display pictures of Chinese people who had sent their messages of goodwill and invitations to the world.

In a news conference at PyeongChang 2018’s Main Press Centre on Saturday, February 24, Chang Yu, Director of Beijing 2022’s Media and Communications Department, congratulated PyeongChang 2018 for staging a successful Olympic Winter Games and thanked his Korean colleagues for providing Beijing with great learning opportunities.

Chang told reporters that preparations for the Games are progressing well on all fronts. He noted that venue construction is on schedule and many legacy venues from Beijing 2008 will be used for Beijing 2022, while all new venues will be built with sustainability in mind.

Chang said that Beijing 2022’s engagement plans to promote Olympic winter sports in China have seen great progress, with the ultimate goal of encouraging millions of people, especially the youth, to embrace winter sports and be inspired by the Olympic spirit. Beijing is well on its way to deliver “Green, Inclusive, Open, and Clean” Olympic Winter Games in 2022 and there will be a great Olympic legacy for China after the Games, he said.

The Olympic flag is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on February 26, with a series of events – including one at the foot of the Great Wall – planned to welcome the flag once again to the Chinese capital.

This handover became one of my favourites! It improved than the one in Athens, in my point of view.  About the pandas, are those the mascots or what?

No, but after this i'm almost sure they're going to bring us a Panda as a mascot for Beijing (probably trying to outmatch Soohorang's popularity?)

I'll be the odd one out.

One of the worst handovers I've seen in some time. No story, no heart , and apart from the video could have been anywhere in the world. Yup, we get it, you have computers, and tv's , and really really fast internet connections China - but big whoop. Not impressed. Apart from the soundtrack, I think that was great.

I do agree with you.. I don't understand what's the point of the handover itself and especially with the message part when the made up joy is clearly visible and the symbolism of the Internet is kinda ironic due to the great firewall.. But yes.. The music is clearly the best part of the handover..

To be frankly honest, while I love Zhang Yimou as a director, I think his strong point is not modernism/futurism. If you watch Beijing 2008 opening again, the future/present segments, while also spectacular, weren't as epic or memorable as the ancient China ones, which is something he has been doing much more often.

Maybe this is why the handover, while being clearly more spectacular r than the disastrous PC handover from 2014, felt a bit heartless and like they were trying a bit too hard to surpass the Tokyo handover. Also if I was Chinese I would probably feel kinda embarrassed of those stereotypical af pandas. 

Very good soundtrack, though. I liked the use of Ode to Motherland, even if it felt a bit repetitive at times (ironical since I remember a couple of chinese users in GB back in 2014 mocked Korea for overusing Arirang on their handover )

I loved it. Outdid Tokyo 2020 just 18 months ago. Thanks to technological advancement, Beijing's Opening Ceremony in 2022 will beat 2008.

I guess so. I hope Beijing 2022 should have learnt the lesson from Beijing 2022 by displaying so many mascots I hardly remember. The most outstanding was the panda. What I loved from PyeongChang 2018 and the Committee's decision on exposing Soohorang as much as Hodori back in 1988 made me revive my childhood when Misha, Sam, Hodori and Cobi became unforgettable and one of the reasons I started to pay attention on the Olympics. My expectation for Beijing 2022 is that its mascot could nail it as the South Koreans achieved with Soohorang,.
