Ikarus360 Posted October 25, 2017 Report Posted October 25, 2017 Felt it was time due to open a topic about the Flagbearers for the Parade of Nations, as usual. Italy has recently selected the Athlete which will carry the Tricolore http://www.coni.it/en/news/primo-piano/14065-arianna-fontana-will-be-the-flag-bearer-for-italy-at-pyeongchang-2018.html Quote Arianna Fontana will be the flag bearer for Italy at PyeongChang 2018 Arianna Fontana will be the flag bearer for Italy at PyeongChang 2018. The champion speed skater’s nomination was formally announced this morning by CONI President, Giovanni Malagò, to Committee members at the Foro Italico. Fontana is the first short track flag bearer in Italian history, the seventh woman ever, the second from Lombardy and the second athlete from the FISG after Carolina Kostner. She is the youngest Italian to have won a medal at the Winter Olympic Games (15 years and 10 months), thanks to the bronze won with the Italian relay team at Turin 2006. She has made it onto the podium for three consecutive editions of the Games, winning bronze at Vancouver 2010 in the 500m and finishing three times on the podium at Sochi 2014: silver in the 500m, and bronze in the 1500m and the relay. She began skating at the age of 4, following in the footsteps of her brother Alessandro, and won her first individual medal in January 2006 during her first international appearance, thanks to the silver medal won at the European Championships in Krynica-Zdrój. In total, she has won 13 world medals (one gold - a record in the 1500m at Moscow 2015, 5 silver and 7 bronze) and 14 European medals, adding six continental titles to the trophy room (Ventspils 2009, Turin 2009, Heerenveen 2011, Mladá Boleslav 2012, Malmö 2013 and Turin 2016) and collecting over 50 World Cup podium positions. She is the Italian short track queen, capable of excelling in all distances: 500, 1000 and 1500 metres. A champion of the Italian Republic, she has been a member of the Fiamme Gialle since 12 December 2008, and in 2015 married her former national team-mate, Anthony Lobello. As a child, she dreamt of being a vet; when this animal lover takes off her skates, she enjoys shopping, listening to music and reading a good book. Lately, she has also tried out boxing and yoga. Her idol is Valentino Rossi. 1 Quote
Ikarus360 Posted October 25, 2017 Author Report Posted October 25, 2017 A month ago, France also picked their Flagbearer. https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1055940/double-olympic-champion-named-as-frances-pyeongchang-2018-flag-bearer Quote Double Olympic champion named as France's Pyeongchang 2018 flag bearer Double Olympic biathlon champion Martin Fourcade has been named as France's flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The 29-year-old was handed the honour by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee's Board of Directors during their meeting at the Maison du Sport Français. Fourcade will be officially appointed to the role on October 4, during the French Olympic team meeting in Paris. He follows another biathlete, Vincent Defrasne, who carried the French flag at Vancouver 2010 and Nordic combined Olympic champion Jason Lamy-Chappuis, who held the honour at Sochi 2014. Fourcade recently revealed he would be interested in the role if it was presented to him. "I will not ask for it, but if institutions and athletes wish, I will do so with great pride and happiness," he told L'Equipe. Fourcade will be hoping to retain the 20 kilometres individual and 12.5km pursuit titles he won at Sochi 2014. He also took bronze in the 15km mass start event in Russia, the same competition he finished third in at Vancouver 2010. The Frenchman has also won 11 World Championship titles during a glittering career. He has competed in 10 International Biathlon Union World Cup seasons, winning six overall titles. 1 Quote

Rob2012 Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Lizzy Yarnold named Team GB Opening Ceremony Flagbearer Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold will lead Team GB into tomorrow night’s Opening Ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games after being selected as Flagbearer today. Yarnold will lead Team GB athletes into the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium where the Opening Ceremony will officially mark the start of the 23rd Olympic Winter Games. Team GB’s 59 athletes are set to compete across 11 sports in the 16 days of competition that follow. The 29-year-old, who was chosen as Flagbearer for the Closing Ceremony four years ago at Sochi 2014, will look to defend her title when the women’s event gets underway on Friday 16th February. Yarnold is aiming to become the first British Winter Olympian to retain her Olympic crown, with her success in Sochi following three successive skeleton medals with gold for Amy Williams in 2010, silver for Shelley Rudman in 2006 and bronze for Alex Coomber in 2002. The winning margin of 0.97 seconds in Sochi was the largest in Olympic history as Yarnold registered two track records and the fastest down time in each of the four runs. https://www.teamgb.com/news/lizzy-yarnold-named-team-gb-opening-ceremony-flagbearer Quote
StefanMUC Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 German flag bearer will be Eric Frenzel, Nordic Combined gold medalist from Sochi (plus one more silver & bronze with the team in Sochi and Vancouver). There was an online vote (again, as for Rio) making up 50% of the result and athletes‘ vote for the other 50%. Other candidates were Christian Ehrhoff (Ice Hockey), Viktoria Rebensburg (Giant Slalom gold Vancouver), Nathalie Geisenberger (Luge gold Sochi) and the eternal Claudia Pechstein who already participated in Speed Skating in Albertville. She is of course also (in)famous for her lonv dispute with ISU about her blood results and doping ban. I‘m really glad that woman didn‘t win (her bf & „mental coach“ is also rather dubious...). Quote
