So I'm sure that they'll figure something out. But a stereotypical cheap thrills, for the sake of internationalism, isn't the answer, either. Especially of all places, Hollywood. At this point, people likely remember certain moments and images, but not much beyond that. Can't imagine there's too much they could show or do at the ceremony that would make people watching think "hey, they did that already, this is old!" Except for 1 person who we know will be disappointed.. with the portions he chooses to see since I doubt he'll watch the whole thing Quote

So there is NOTHING wrong with going Hollywood-LA-USA for a 4th time. It's ALL perfectly acceptable within the IOC framework. But I have a few ideas which will squeeze through those. It may be within the IOC charter but that doesn't mean the 2028 games should follow or honor them. If the LA OOC wants to upend tradition, instead of an opening ceremony held along, say, the LA River or at two stadiums at the same time, how about the committee and its staff toss out the worn-out idea of "Olympic tradition calls for the host country to demonstrate to the world a sample of its music and dance." Been there, done that. In 1984, 1995, 2002 and 2012 (yea, to me the 2012 OOC presented their games as though they were bad Hollywood, bad LA), enough already with "Olympic tradition." Quote
Olympics2028 Posted August 10, 2022 Report Posted August 10, 2022 This to me is the basic format or theme the 2028 games should follow. The tone of this was among the most universal or international (and moving) I've ever seen in an opening or closing. It's even better because the diarrhea-of-the-mouth chatter of TV broadcasters isn't heard during the presentation. Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted August 10, 2022 Author Report Posted August 10, 2022 /\/\ Well, then -- been there' done that. Duh. BTW, about junking ""Olympic tradition calls for the host country to demonstrate to the world a sample of its music and dance." Uhmmm, the IOC has to approve the content and style of the Ceremonies, . . . so good luck with your telling them to their face that their dictum sucks. I see why you might not be one source they will be consulting. Quote

And I feel like you're missing the idea that if the ceremonies were more generic and not country-specific, how do they differentiate themselves from one another. 46 minutes ago, Olympics2028 said: This to me is the basic format or theme the 2028 games should follow. Not "been there, done that" for the past several decades. Olympic ceremonies for years, both winter and summer, have become one big blur of Cirque du Soleil meets MTV Awards and Super Bowl halftime. As for the IOC, they increasingly have gone "screw that" to Olympic tradition, certainly when it comes to ceremonies. So I'm sure if the 2028 OOC yells "the tradition of local yokel is too local yokel!," the IOC will go, "okay, do something more international. No sweat off our back." You still look at this through you own very personal and narrow lens and completely ignore what the public at large wants. They're not interested in choirs and big bands like they were 40 years ago. This is the age of social media. You may view Cirque du Soleil and MTV as cheesy and tacky and you may be right, but that's what sells to the younger audience the IOC is desperately craving. Sure, the IOC as you hinted are a bunch of out of touch autocrats, but unless tradition sells, then "financial considerations" are going to win out. And you can continue to whine about it while the rest of us enjoy the ceremonies. Plus, for the umpteenth time.. Tokyo's ceremonies were held without spectators in attendance, so that's not going to be a template for anything we want to see again. Ever. baron is right.. you have all these ideas about what you don't want to see but offer very little in terms of what you think would work. It's all "I want this because meeeeeeeeeeeeee!" Learn to read the room if you're going to project upon the IOC what you think they should do. Their goal is not going to be to satisfy your personal wants and desires. 1 Quote

We’re just feeding his addiction. We know what he says he wants from ceremonies - mass choirs, ordered flags, solemn marches, dignified spectacle ans definitely nothing “funky”. In other words, something like this: Thank god those types of ceremonies went the same way as the Soviet Union. The thing is, ceremonies in this era are meant to be celebratory. They’re meant to be joyous. They’re meant to be entertainment. They have to be something that will get bums on seats and, even more importantly, billions of eyeballs on TV and huge ratings to justify broadcasting rights costs and advertising rates. That’s all hard enough now in the post-MTV, Instagram and TikTok era. Choirs and polkas definitely aren’t gonna cut it. Edited August 10, 2022 by Sir Rols 1 1 Quote

Several months ago I posted a link to a story about how newer music being produced haven't been selling nearly as well as old music compositions from years or decades ago. I believe the article pointed out that's a trend not seen before and implied it doesn't bode well for younger musicians and their song writing and song making. Similarly, certain entertainment/variety TV shows, such as the Academy Awards, have seen their ratings drop continuously for over 20 years. The ratings do fluctuate, but the trend is generally downward. As with, for example, programs that hand out "medals" for acting or singing, an event (such as the Olympics) that hand out medals for sports may see the same trend. Quote

Yes, the Olympics also face that challenge of facing the new digital landscape. But harking back to Soviet era-type dirges is not the solution. Quote

As with, for example, programs that hand out "medals" for acting or singing, an event (such as the Olympics) that hand out medals for sports may see the same trend. In 1991-1992, the top 5 rated TV shows (with average rating in parenthesis).. 60 Minutes (21.9) Roseanne (19.9) Murphy Brown (18.6) Cheers (17.5) Home Improvement (17.5) In 2018-19, the last year they measured top programs by ratings rather than total viewers.. Sunday Night Football (10.9) The Big Bang Theory (10.6) NCIS (9.6) Thursday Night Football (8.7) Young Sheldon (8.7) Ratings for virtually everything have been dropping for years now. It's because the audience is much more fragmented than it ever was before. The trends don't tell us that the appeal for certain types of shows is less than it was 30 years ago. It's that there are more entertainment options out there, so it's harder for big events to cut through. The same is true of the Olympics which have seen ratings drops over the last decade. But that follows the trend that ratings for everything is dropping. Goes to the same point about music. Lots more ways to get easy access to music these days than buying an album or listening to the radio. You're right it doesn't bode well for younger musicians. But it's not a sign that music was better 30 years ago than it is now. It's a bad argument and terrible logic to try and apply here in order to justify your "we need to go back to the way things were" argument Quote

Are you trying to be insufferable? What does baron bring to the discussion? There's a book you should check out. Sometimes, I bring a sense of history to some Ceremonial MOs. But except maybe for Athens 2004 Opening which is over-rated -- breathtaking in its logistics and execution -- but it really did NOT, IMHO, convey a joy and sense of homecoming that those Ganes should've deserved. I am restrained in publicly posting possible future ideas because: 1. I feel it's a waste of my time and energy to postulate on what future Ceremonies because, having dealt with past COJOs, I know they will go ahead and execute what they were hired to do. 2. Also, a sense of IP security that if I have feasible original ideas, I'd rather share them with the possible entities charged with putting on the Game, hence -- it's a little hard to articulate -- but I try to maintain a sense of IP privacy/security and post when I feel I break no confidentiality strictures which might otherwise disqualify my ideas. However, if you follow, say, the Paris 2024 cauldron threads -- where anybody can throw in their guesses, then I am just like the next person in that I am really not giving up any IP (material) that I can claim as mine. Also, from past works, again, except for Athens 2004, I respect what was executed for that time, and find it TOTALLY pointless and even graceless, to try and tear down what is done and is history, Regardless of what you think of the Cirque du Soleil quality, say, of the Atlanta 1996 Opening (of which I was part of the cast), if you go to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the 10 minute clip that loops around in the room dedicated to Opening Ceremonies -- that section is so prominently featured in that Official Video and I was part of the actual thing, even in some small way. If it's good enough for the IOC and for all their generations of visitors for years to come, then it's good enough for me. Edited August 12, 2022 by baron-pierreIV Quote
Bear Posted August 16, 2022 Report Posted August 16, 2022 as someone from LA i hope they go all out with the city's history and culture... there's so much that LA84 did not show, and we finally have an opportunity to show it in an amazing manner. This should be our ceremony, showing our culture, and inviting those from abroad to experience an authentic LA and California. After all, these are the Los Angeles 2028 Games. If people really want an international show with no regard to the host culture, then they can go to EPCOT instead. 3 1 Quote
