2017 UEFA Women's Euro

Recommended Posts

Surprised that we haven't even touched on this event that's woefully overlooked here on these shores unless you're a hardcore women's soccer fan. So I'll take the initiative here. The final is now set with a surprise in a tournament of surprises: host Netherlands will face Denmark as The Oranje manage to stop England's Lionnesses 3-0 and will stay in Enschede to take it all on Sunday. Thought it was England's time to finally take charge and were capable but were definitely missing goalie Karen Bardsley to injury and Jill Scott to suspension in this game.

Germany's seemingly unstoppable machine-like 22-year reign as Euro champs is now over thanks to Denmark 2-1, and it appears this time coming in after winning gold in Rio De Janeiro they were in transition and searching for an identity. And that perhaps got them in trouble. Sweden is out by the Dutch in the QF. France's Les Bleues got eliminated by England before they fell to the Dutch, and the pressure's on for this French golden generation to get some silverware by the time they get to be WWC hosts two years from now. Are we seeing a change of the guard with Switzerland, Spain, The Netherlands,  Denmark, and perhaps more surprisingly Austria doing damage? Maybe but those traditional powers are always capable of rebounding soon. Italy meanwhile can't seem to catch a break(through) in recent times, punctuated when the Azzurri was lumped with Germany, Sweden, and Russia in their group. Denmark on the other hand is back in prominence.

Denmark beats Austria 3-0 following a scoreless draw.

Some solid viewing figures here and our Lionnesses had been doing well till yesterday. Yesterday's match was also the first time that the 'England Band' turned up to support the women's team.

I would suggest the two aren't unrelated.

The Lionnesses indeed were doing well until they ran into the Oranje and their stifling defense on their home turf, and Channel 4's TV ratings with them playing certainly boost. Without the aforementioned Bardsley and Scott against them, they were seemingly less than. And there's no third-place game for them to redeem themselves somewhat on this here. A shame. I really thought this year was going to be their time to win; it's been a great summer for England FA national team soccer until this...
