He must be dreaming, In 1984, MP was relegated to Coto de Caza in Orange County--or was it Rancho Santa Margarita? For a sport which is on the verge of being kicked out -- only had 72 athletes compete in Paris -- 36 men and 36 women, he's nuts if he thinks LA28 will honor MP with MP-dedicated only venues, other than the Obstacle course!! MP will use the LA Coliseum for the track events, I guess LA Conv Center for Fencing; wherever Shooting will be and wherever they will build an Obstacle course that could, if lucky, get 4,000 seats. The sport (or at least in the US barely gets primetime coverage, so Rob Stull is whistling in the dark. If US athletes lead the competition in LA, then it will get some attention, otherwise . . . pfffft. I think they should have put in Rhythmic Gymnastics instead of Obstacles. Make them lead balls and poisoned tips on the ribbons . . . so they qualify as weapons and hence fit under the Modern Pentathlon category!! 😃 Just seeing this now… Tell me you know nothing about current format of MP without telling me you know nothing about it. Go back to the footage of MP in Paris - which was staged at Versailles! - and come back then. Quote

Bear Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 2 hours ago, baron-pierreIV said: But ya know, HB is just one community that is quite red -- and the event is what? 2 days? OKLAHOMA CITY is DEEP RED for at least 2 events -- maybe running over 7 or 8 days! Carson City might be purple. Anaheim (where Indoor Volleyball will be played) is more red than blue. Lower Trestles is a remote beach south of San Clemente. I hope LA28 picks the site that is best for the sport and for the organization. Politics shouldn't matter in staging the sports. Carson and Anaheim are both blue, and voted for Kamala Harris this election. Even then, they do not have a white supremacist problem as in Huntington Beach. As for OKC, while I do not know much about their politics, I see that their (yes, Republican) mayor has a section on Wikipedia labeled "Opposition to Trumpism", while other sections contain the following: Holt proclaimed "Indigenous Peoples' Day" for the first time in city history, proclaimed "Pride" for the first time in city history to honor the LGBTQ community, and stated publicly that immigrants are welcome in Oklahoma City. Holt has joined official celebrations commemorating the city's civil rights movement and included a $26 million civil rights center in the MAPS 4 initiative. The city also added a diversity and inclusion officer to the city staff. ..... During the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Holt attended protests. He met with Black Lives Matter leaders and created a task force to look at law enforcement policies and a task force to look at reinstatement of the city's Human Rights Commission. Meanwhile, the mayor of Huntington Beach is a full on Trump cult member and is ensuring his city adopts the MAGA agenda. OKC was the only choice unless you wanted to be left with white elephant venues after the Games end. Huntington Beach is one choice out of two. There is precedent for politics causing venue changes, anyways: https://www.atlantamagazine.com/news-culture-articles/pride-how-a-tiny-gay-activist-group-defied-the-odds-to-push-the-olympics-out-of-cobb-county/ Quote

Pity. Admittedly, it is a while ago since I was there. Stayed there in my younger years when I was bumming down from LA to San Diego. Just liked the vibes, and remember as one of the occasions I got to meet some very stereotypical archetypes - real, like totally, (1980s) surfer dudes. Quote
Quaker2001 Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 I don't think this is a major concern and it's tough to tell if this isn't politically charged or not, but sharing here because why else would we be doing this Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 (edited) /\/\ Oh my. LA28 has a few Plan B's in place. (And speaking of the LACC, I find it quite odd that LA28 will be placing the IBC/Press Center in Studio City -- so far away from Downtown, the Exposition Park area, the Media/Press Village at USC, Inglewood and Caron City hubs. I know Universal/NBC will be providing the land and whatever building is required, but . . . Edited February 11 by baron-pierreIV Quote

This is from an article last year when the expansion was first announced: "The Convention Center doesn’t need to be bigger to host Olympic events such as table tennis and fencing. Still, city leaders want to use the international gathering as an impetus to start construction." If anything, the LACC expansion itself proved a possible risk to the Games due to the short timeline: "The expansion plan, if it proceeds from there, could cost $4.78 billion over 30 years, including debt on any loans. But if engineers conclude in the coming months that it can’t be completed in time for the Olympics or will go over budget, it won’t go forward, city analysts said Tuesday." https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-03/la-city-council-moves-forward-revamped-convention-center-plan-ahead-of-2028-olympics 1 1 Quote
