Maybe that might end up in San Diego County -- which would require its own OV then.) I'm afraid they may have to build a new "temporary" facility for that if they keep it in Sepulveda and have shooters stay in the main UCLA-OV.) Temecula is closer than Rancho Santa Fe (Fairbanks Ranch), where eventing/cross country for equestrian was in 1984. Long Beach makes things closer for some events, like rowing/canoe sprint vs. Lake Casitas in 1984. Sailing will again be in Long Beach. I can't find the old article but I remember reading that the sailing athletes for the '84 Games were happy that the sailing venue was really close compared to the previous two Olympics---For Moscow, sailing was in Talinn, Estonia, 641 miles away; for Montreal, the sailing venue was in Kingston, Ontario, 179 miles away. Exposition Park to the Long Beach waterfront is only about 22 or 23 miles as the crow flies. I'm very curious to know where the "new to '28" sports will be. I thought I read a few years ago that the green space just south of the Rose Bowl could be used as a cricket pitch, but I can't find the article anywhere. That was probably just speculation. Flag football can be contested at a reconfigured community college football stadium with enough seating capacity; I'm thinking maybe Weingart Stadium on the campus of East Los Angeles College? That was the venue for field hockey in 1984. Edited August 7, 2024 by ejaycat Quote

What a rare historic event! The only time South OC suddenly becomes welcoming and hospitable to foreigners 1 Quote
FYI Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Probably because the Dutch are mainly white anyway. Quote

Olympics2028 Posted August 10, 2024 Report Posted August 10, 2024 The Oscars in LA still have "best actor" and "best actress." The 2028 games in LA may want to have more open competitions. Sports like beach volleyball could have both men and women participants. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/olympic-committee-president-suggests-there-s-no-scientific-way-to-differentiate-between-men-and-women/ar-AA1oygJh Quote International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach suggested there is no scientific way to differentiate between men and women during a press conference on Friday. Sex eligibility rules have been a point of contention at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrawing just 46 seconds into her fight with Algerian fighter Imane Khelif. Perhaps as a result, Bach was asked Friday if the committee would perform a review of its sex change guidelines, in response to which he stated there was no concrete, scientific way to differentiate men from women. We have said from the very beginning, if somebody presented us [a] scientifically solid system how to identify men and women we [the IOC] are the first ones to do it,” Bach told reporters. “It is not as easy as some in this cultural world may want to portray it — that the XX or the XY [chromosome] is the clear distinction between men and women.” Quote

Quote "These 'car-free Games' will mean you'll have to use public transportation to get to all the venues," Bass said at a news conference. "To do that, we're expanding our public transportation network." More than 3,000 buses will be taken from other parts of the United States. Well, good luck. If the Los Angeles games allow for a significant development of public transport, it would be a great legacy for the city. But with only 4 years to go until the Games, I have the feeling that it's going to be complicated. More complicated than cleaning the Seine? Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted August 11, 2024 Report Posted August 11, 2024 Hope this doesn't jinx things but . . . how do I know that a lady president will open LA 2028? The lady's name is KamaLA! It's fate -- it's karma -- it's kismet!! It's written in the stars!! And her running mate is Tim WALz -- LA inverted! Is that feng shui or what?? Quote
Sir Rols Posted August 12, 2024 Author Report Posted August 12, 2024 I was wondering where LA could place some Olympic rings to make as god a visual statement as Sydney Harbour ridge, London’s Tower Bridge or the Eiffel Tower, and wondered if the Hollywood sign would work. And there it is, exactly as I thought it might. Was that for real? Are the rings there now? Quote

I would guess LA city hall will host the rings. Quote

ejaycat Posted August 12, 2024 Report Posted August 12, 2024 I don't think there'll be a huge Olympic rings anywhere in Los Angeles, there's really no synecdochal landmark that represents the whole of the city or area. I don't recall any one huge Olympic rings anywhere during the 1984 Games, although I do remember the color scheme everywhere and olympic rings on light pole banners and such. I guess City Hall can have huge rings on them, and I assume the Olympic flag will be flown there. Even in '84, LA City Hall looked like this: It wasn't painted pink, it just looks pink this picture. But apparently it had some of the '84 Olympics color scheme on it. Quote

Where are some of the places you're going to check out? Yeah well, I have always been fascinated by plate tectonics, so I guess it's partly true. OTOH, it could also be part of a build up to something bigger (which is anyway overdue in California, but hopefully not anytime near...). We'll do a classic southwest tour (LA/Grand Canyon/Vegas/SF).
