That's the usual window for the primetime show and it makes they can light the flame(s) around 8:45 PT, so it'll be after sunset. I agree about 5pm local for the start time, but it won't be over by 11 on the East coast Quote

BigVic Posted February 16, 2023 Report Posted February 16, 2023 East Coast bias will mean the ceremonies will be in daylight to allow a live coverage in the primetime hours as well as the swimming and track and field finals maxmising the best ratings potential. Some events like basketball and beach volleyball could be held in primetime LA time like in Rio Quote

The beach volleyball competitions now require games to be played all day and at night for most of the days, so there are always matches under the lights. It will make for some great visuals for the LA finals to occur around sunset with the westerly views over the Pacific ocean. But it'll be timed for TV purposes first and foremost. 5 hours ago, BigVic said: East Coast bias will mean the ceremonies will be in daylight to allow a live coverage in the primetime hours as well as the swimming and track and field finals maxmising the best ratings potential. They'll break for local news on the East coast (West coast will get bonus coverage) and then "Primetime Plus" as they now call it continues from 12:35am until 2am, which yes is primetime on the West coast and should have some live events on the schedule there. Considering that 10am ET is 7am on the West coast, it'll be at least an hour or 2 into the daytime show on NBC before they have any live event coverage there. 1 Quote

There is no need PLUS, logistically, it's unnecessary expense to set up an Olympic BV arena for night telecasting. I mean, it is an OPEN AIR structure . . . and, in LA's case, you're way out in the beach. No wonder these Games go over-budget -- staging events like these in an artificial timeframe when they look so natural in just pure daylight. Quote

Again, beach volleyball is an all day affair in order to get 2 full tournaments in (men's and women's) and only do it using 1 court (as opposed to the world championships where they use several courts). Uh-ah. There are other courts around -- both for warm-up, practice and for the early elimination rounds. It's not like Wimbledon, Roland Garros or Ashe Center use only ONE court. Here's Rio's . . cfm Jeremie Posted February 17, 2023 Report Posted February 17, 2023 Quaker is right: there is only one competition court at the Olympic Games which explains why beach volleyball venue is one of the busiest of the Games. Quote

Yes, I see those other courts around. Do any of those look like they're used for competition? No TV cameras, no press, no fans. They are warm-up and practice only. As opposed to the beach volleyball world championships. There they do have action on multiple courts because the tournaments have double the number of competitors as they do at the Olympics and they're trying to finish the tournament over 10 days. Each of the men's and women's beach volleyball tournaments at the Olympics consist of 54 matches apiece. 108 matches total, they don't need more than 1 main court. In contrast to tennis where there's 5 tournaments at the Olympics (both singles and doubles for men and women, plus mixed doubles). That's a lot more matches to complete and they usually try and finish that in a week so as not to disrupt the rest of the calendar. As opposed to beach volleyball, they'll use more of the 2 weeks of the Olympics to complete the tournament. Plenty of tickets to sell with matches all day throughout the pool play stage. Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted February 17, 2023 Report Posted February 17, 2023 (edited) /\ OK. Thanks for clarifying that. Thought there would be similar numbers. BTW, at the prelims in the beauty pageants, they don't conduct those in front of audiences. They are held--or at least the way Miss Universe does it--"behind closed doors" -- well sometimes, cameras are allowed in. So it is possible to hold early eliminations without crowds. Then it becomes logistically too complicated. Next . . . Edited February 17, 2023 by baron-pierreIV Quote

Not the same with beach volleyball. All of those matches carry importance, so they'll want each of them to be individually featured Quote
