Parts of Sydney's torch relay was also done by boat

They've tried everything except putting in on a hearse.  Maybe let the horses carry the flame -- after all, they compete in Equestrian?   But it has been run on horseback, first in 1956.

Mon Baron, have you not worked it out yet?

It’s obviously going to be a tribute to that great French hero, Le Pétomane

Joseph Pujol, better known by his stage name Le Pétomane, was a French flatulist (professional farter) and entertainer. He was famous for his remarkable control of the abdominal muscles, which enabled him to seemingly fart at will.

The torch is obviously shaped as it is so it can fit between Estanguet’s buttocks as he bends over to light his fart, which will set alight the cauldron, which will be shaped like a giant bowl of Crêpes Suzette, slung below the Jules Verne restaurant on level 2 of the Eiffel Tower, as a secondary tribute to La Cuisine Francaisle!

Even went underwater during a leg of the relay back then! For Sochi 2014, the torch visited space!

Actually, the 2000 torch was the first one underwater; and of course, the Sydney cauldron rose from a bed of water.  As for space, the Montreal 1976 flame was the first one "transported" via a satellite link --so, it also went to space -- in 1976.

Here is someone else I'd consider being a final Torchbearer and Lighter (if I were consulted).  Remember, he walked between the World Trade Center towers in NYC in 1974.  Quite a feat!

I watched the movie of his feat:

It was good… but as someone who is extremely scared of heights, it was also one of the most excruciatingly terrifying films I’ve ever watched. Along with this one…

/\/\  Yes.  I rented THE WALK a while back and enjoyed it.  The WTC Towers meant something to me.  Those were my early days in NYC when the Towers opened; and I watched the filming of the 1977 KING KONG there; THE WIZ also.  Ate at the Windows on the World restaurant 2x; and would buy my half-price Broadway tickets at the TKTS booth in the lobby of the North Tower.

Maybe they'll have Petit, now in his 70s, scaling the Eiffel Tower??

The Olympia ceremony is getting close. And for this occassion they're going to revamp the usual ritual. For example, the uniforms will now be radically different.

What are they thinking?  They look TACKY -- and all the more so in daylight!  They're going to look like cartoon figures in those outfits.

Just rewatched the Lighting Ceremony.  I think Laure Manadou has a very good chance of being one of the--I'm guessing--2 final lighters at the Cauldron.  Because this edition of the Games has a very distinct feminine slant, maybe Laure Manadou, Mayor Anne Hidalgo (and C. Coste) might be the Final Torchbearers to Light the Cauldron??

Other trivia note:  The Handover to LA will be the 2nd time in history that the Olympic flag handover will happen between two women City executives.  Last time was in Tokyo 2021 when the Tokyo governor passed the Oly flag (to Bach first, who then) passed it on to Anne Hidalgo of Paris.  When the Games close in August, Anne Hidalgo will then pass the flag to Karen Bass of LA!!  (Previously, however, Deedee Corradani recv'd the WOG flag in Nagano for Salt Lake.  And in 2004, then Athenian mayor Dora Bekayonis passed on the SOG flag to her Beijing counterpart (male).)

And it's a Paris 1900 medal too, what a fortune. Even though those were a mess.

But the odd thing is, I checked David Wallachinsky's THE COMPLETE BOOK OF THE OLYMPICS (2012 edition), he already had Hildebrand listed as FRA -- so I don't know what this crazy news bit reports as "new"?

(Oh, OK -- this is a stunt announced in time for Paris 2024.  I think the IOC found moulds for the 1900 medals, had a copy commissioned --merely for show -- and then, made the announcement w/ Paris 2024, and of course, the formation of Nice/Alpes 2030.  So, I think that's what this "weird new" item is really about.  And I don't know if they have found heirs to Hildebrand to pass on the "copied 1900 medals"?)

Also, here is another one who I think they would consider as one of the final lighters--based on her Olympic record and gold medal haul - yachtswoman/saileress Laura Flessel, a five-time Olympic medallist, including two gold medals at Atlanta 1996.

Last time I checked she was a fencer and not a yachtswoman, but yeah, she should be up there somewhere too.

Spoiler:

Heres a look at the cauldron/cauldron cover for the Paris Games set up in the park in front of the Louvre. Curious is this is an inflatable mask for it or the cauldron itself. If the actual cauldron, looks like it might open around the middle. Would be a nice tie in to the torches.
