Who will light the LA cauldron in 2028??

It does.  Like a few of the other caldera as well.

I think they should at least keep it lit during the games. It might not be the main cauldron, but it should be lit. Too iconic and historic not to.

I thought that was the plan.  My understanding with the 2-stadium opening ceremony was that they'll do a cauldron lighting at the new NFL stadium where the main ceremonies will be, and somehow light the one at the Coliseum, and then from there I assume since the main closing ceremony will be at the Coliseum, the flame there would be the one they douse.

But I could be wrong.

I don't think the 2-stadium opening ceremony idea will actually happen. In the past few months they've dropped all mention of a 2-stadium opening ceremony and simply said that the opening ceremony will take place at the COC stadium. Personally I would prefer them use the Coliseum. Who knows, in 11 years the stadium could be able to get an upgrade and become fit for a modern ceremony. I just can't help but feel it's too historic and beautiful a venue to not use it.

Not gonna happen when you have a covered, state-of-the-art stadium with the new-car smell, waiting in the wings.  LA Mem is for competiion -- NOT for a fantastic OC that is a few generations above the 1984 edition.

I know, but one can dream. I wish that plan to renovate the LA Mem as proposed in the early stages of the bid had gone forward. The plans that had the LA Mem become a covered state of the art stadium. 

Though COC Stadium is not going to be state-of-the-art when the games happen. It'll be almost a decade old.

But it'll still be 100 years newer than LA Memorial where you have everything jerry-rigged and add-ons; and you can't start a theatrical event early (due to an 8:00pm  East Coast start) but  which darkness you can easily acheve at the newer, covered CofC stadium.

It'd be nicer if/when the California legislature finally passes the bill to abolish DST, and then the sun would set a little after 7pm instead of a little after 8pm in LA in late July.  But then I guess that would mean the east coast would be 4 hours ahead, and our opening ceremonies would have to start at 4pm.  It should start at 6pm California time.

You want to keep your viewing numbers (in the East) solid for the 4 hours.  So if prime time ends @ 11:00pm (climaxing in the Lighting of the Cauldron), so the show mus start @ 7:00 pm, EST = 4:00pm CA time.   If the numbers are far lower than what NBC promises, they will have to refund fees to advertisers, and if I am not mistaken, NBC can pass this back to the IOC.  Certainly, the IOC would not want that.

Well, with the big deal L.A. made about "the sun", it would only be appropiate that their Opening Ceremony take place in the daylight hours anyway!

But wasn't that new stadium proposed for the City of Industry ITFP? Wasn't aware that the new site was Inglewood. But either way, that's going to be one heck of a very expensive stadium!

Wouldn't it just be smarter to start it @ 8:00pm, EST = 5:00pm PST? You would get more time with the sun down, even with the roofed stadium you would want some good nighttime shots. The bulk of the US market lives in the CST anyways right? I think a 5:00pm start is a much more desirable time.

No, the bulk would be the EST, which is the entire East Coast of the U.S. (& some Midwestern States as well) & would also include the bulk of the Canadian population, too (Ontario, Quebec & the Maritime provinces). That was always in Toronto's favor, if they bid again, that they were located in that all-important EST-zone (which emcompasses a huge population of the U.S.).

The new stadium in Inglewood is gonna be awesome.  The model you see in this video is impressive in my opinion.  I can't wait for this thing to be built.

Here's a more current photo.  The cauldron definitely works.  Here it is lit up pretty recently (July 26, 2017) during the Manchester City/Real Madrid soccer match, which drew 93,098 people, the largest crowd to ever see a soccer match at the Coliseum.  And also recently, the scoreboard screens that used to sit on top of the peristyle have been removed and replaced with ones above the stands, further away from the peristyle, as you can also see in the picture.

/\/\  Really NOT a good place to stage a concise Olympic Opening Ceremony, especially if there is a more state-of-the-art modern on available that offers at least 4 entrances/exits into the infield.  That's the Coliseum's main drawback in hosting a 21st century OOpening Ceremony.  It's good that LA has a much better alternative.

LA 2028 is entertaining the concept of dual stadium ceremonies, so the final relay lineup is going to be huge. Michael Phelps gets the honor to light the cauldron, but I would like to see those who participate in the final leg join Phelps in lighting the torch together as Team USA, reenacting what the Miracle on Ice team did in Salt Lake City.

3. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird (w/ the Dream Team)

4. Carl Lewis 

5. Mary Lou Retton (w/Carly Paterson, Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles)

During the Atlanta games...NBC started their coverage at 8pm and the ceremony started at 8:45. The same happened in Vancouver (NBC started at 8pm, EST, the ceremony started at 9pm). American and Canadian interests will be used to schedule events. The Olympic finals for track, swimming, and gymnastics starts at 5:30 local time.

The nation (and the world) likely expects Michael Phelps to light the cauldron. Greg Louganis is a great pick. Carl Lewis has to be a part of the final leg (most decorated athlete of the 1984 games). Misty May and Kerri Walsh is at my #6. I wouldn't be surprised if they ran the torch around the track. 

The Dream Team changed basketball and made it a worldwide game, not to mention Magic Johnson is a LA sports legend. They got the 1980 Olympic Team together in Salt Lake City, so its possible in LA. If its not feasible, Johnson and Bird can run on their behalf. Don't expect them to light the cauldron. 

Nothing is going to top the Muhammad Ali moment in 1996. LA2028 will choose someone that everyone will approve.
