Also, the AFC is backing the Saudi Arabian bid, which I assume will impact Australia's chances (hopefully I'm wrong on this though)

Yeah, that’s what I fear - the AFC screwing us again as they did in 2022 with Qatar

Time for Australia to move back to Oceania? With 48 in the WC and a secure spot, it‘s pretty much guaranteed you‘re in it every time.

Hmmm. Competition-wise moving to Asia’s been good for us. We’re getting regular competitive games more to our level, a more defined path to qualification and thus are a bit more match-ready when we do qualify (which has been every time since the AFC switch). We’ve developed a nice match rivalry with the likes of Japan. In Oceania we were at the mercy of the play-offs lottery and not getting much experience on the way.

it’s the politics of the AFC move that’s f*cking us. I rant enough about the poison of the Gulf blood money elsewhere to need to spell that out again here.

Not yet final at this stage, but ratification and FORMAL awarding will happen in fall next year, so 3rd quarter, 2024.

Maybe this is FIFA's version of "targeted dialog"!

Thinking about it after I posted the previous remark, yesterday's announcement really fulfills the traditional 7-year leadtime that IOC ascribed to and which FIFA adopted in its site-selection process.  So, FIFA is right on time.

I touched on this in another thread, but I think the dire economic state of Argentina (broke with a worthless currency and about to elect the Argentine Donald Trump who wields chainsaws at rallies), Paraguay and Uruguay simply wasn't feasible financially or logistically. FIFA does not want to award their prized tournament to a collection of third world countries who cannot afford it. Portugal, Spain, and Morocco are a safe bet and FIFA acted on it.

Opening ceremony i think could be in Casablanca at the Grand Stade de Casablanca. What about you guys? The opening ceremony will be in Morocco, Portugal and Spain. It has to be in either one of the three primary host countries.

No, the opening ceremony will take place before the opening match, which will be in Montevideo to mark the centenary of the World Cup - that’s the whole point of including them, Argentina and Paraguay

Would be nice to have the opening ceremony situated at Grand Stade de Casablanca, because #1 the desire to showcase the newest stadium venue and #2 the city is world famous thanks to the movie. But Spain's got greater gravity and success in soccer than Morocco and Portugal, so you expect it would take place there, be it either in Madrid or Barcelona. Both with new look stadiums for its premier clubs.

If a way can be done to share the opening ceremony between the three nations simultaneously, surely the technology would be there by then. I would expect, like with just happened in New Zealand and Australia, all three would have their teams all playing on opening day.

Now that you mentioned it, it would make sense to have them in Montevideo's aptly-named Centenario Stadium to mark 100 World Cup years--and there will be LOADS of tie-ins to commemorate this!--and yeah, that's why they're included with Argentina and Paraguay. For history.

Casablanca is also hoping to host the final.

Morocco has been trying to get Grand Stade de Casablanca built for more nearly 20 years now. I'm not even sure by being part of a joint hosting of the WC that it will get built. It wouldn't surprise me if Morocco decides on an expansive renovation of Stade Mohammed V instead.

Madrid for the final. Barcelona and Seville for the semis. Lisbon for third place. I expect Morocco to get two of the quarterfinals - Casablanca and Marrakech.

Morocco is the weakest of the 3 countries.  it was just thrown in as a sop so that 2030's not entirely a Euro event.  But don't kid yourself into thinking that Morocco carries as much weight as Portugal and Spain.  Study 2026.  Canada is the most dispensable of the 3, hence they're done away with early.  Then Mexico and, of course, the major country, the US. carries the brunt of the hosting.

Casablanca hosting the final is currently in discussion. I heard that coupe of days ago which Fouzi Lekjaa the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and chairman of the 2030 committee said.

^Again, not gonna happen. That would be like having the 2026 final in Vancouver or better yet, Monterrey. At this point, they're lucky that they're even part of this at all, let alone wanting to hog the final at this point. So they can "battle" it out all they want, but logistically & commerically, FIFA knows it makes the most sense to have the 2030 final in Europe.

No it is. They will be discussing the match schedule of venues will take place on the 18th in Rabat.

Listen closely… Casablanca… will… NOT… host… the… final

Spain’s the senior partner in this. They are not doing so in order to hand the final glory to someone else.  Morocco will possibly get at least one semi, but NO more

And Spain's sports minister expects the final in Spain, so what's your point?  Hard to put a final in a stadium that hasn't been built yet.  Maybe once Casablanca has their stadium, they can enter the discussion, but I doubt it's going to be to get the final, as much as the Morocco football folks will advocate for that.

At the end of the day, Spain and Portugal don't even need Morocco to host this thing. The Iberian peninsula is capable of hosting o  their own, but by including Morocco, FIFA can check off a few boxes (Muslim, Africa, country with recent WC success, and finally awarding a repetitive bidder). Tangier, Marrakech, and Rabat (maybe Fes if Casablanca can't get its stadium situation fixed) are the only sure cities with the required stadiums for a WC and none of them meet the capacity for a semifinal let alone final. Casablanca actually now lacks a suitable WC stadium right now. They either have to finally build GSDC or extensively renovate Stade Mohammed V. It's quite possible neither of those happen so anything beyond a QF match is a pipe dream
