You weren't clear about that -- so I misunderstood.  Still, I don't see how Colombia, Ecuador and Peru can better host a 48-nation tournament vs. the rival Argentine-led bid.  Plus, Uruguay carries the sentimental Centennial nostalgia for the event.  Of course, whatever matches are held in BA and Montevideo (I guess, the semis- and the finals) are going to be held in the southern part's Winter season.

I think the quarter-finals could be held in capitals Santiago in Chile and Asuncion in Paraguay. along with Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montenegro in Uruguay.

So, 2030 WC will be A CUP - the acronym for Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay!   Almost clever!!  That would mean 2 consecutive FIFA WCs in the Americas.

So, will their bid be played to the northern summer (July-August) which would be winter down there?  Or would it be played to the Southern summer (December - January) which would be the northern winter?  Doesn't make sense to play it in South American winter.

Opening in Montevideo and final in Buenos Aires? That would be fascinating. Although maybe too crowded host?

That's how I would do it.  Mark the anniversary at Montevideo w/ I guess Uruguay vs. a weak Euro nation -- to make sure the host wins.  And BA being the largest and most important city in the 4 nations, definitely deserves the Finals.

Montevideo is ideally hosting because Estadio Centenario hosted the finals back in 1930, argentina and chile and paraguay are just hosting because well...uruguay is an small country and the rest dont have enough money to host the event on their own. This bid will be an athens 1996 on all the rule, specially comparing the turistic infrastructure, the transport and the venues proposed of iberia vs south cone bid. Buenos aires is the most developed city of the latino bid, but montevideo, santiago, asuncion ... can't compare to the "city of fury" in the rest of sections, specially considering the actual state of their proposed venues. If winning it will be a latino party on all the rule, long awaited after well....qatar's restrictions (if we don't take into account US, mexico and canada are hosting 2026), they would definitely need HUGE investment to organize the event but hope it will help develop the touristic infrastructure of those 4 culturaly rich countries

It would be hard to say NO to NOT Celebrating the Centennial of the World Cup in Uruguay-Argentina, etc.  because the Commonwealth Games will also be marking their 100th anniversary in Hamilton, Canada in July or August of the same year!  That's where the CWG were born.

So, how can the football world not mark the 100th anniversary in the same way?  Infrastructure-wise, I think CUP are the same as Portugal.  And as you said, this is as good an excuse as any to bring things up to snuff.  Besides, this is just a 1-sport tournament not a 30-sport event like the Olympics or a CWG.  ACUP will do fine for 2030.

I think Argentina-Chile-Uruguay-Paraguay could be awarded the 2030 FIFA World Cup since these South American countries have very good infrastructure and strong football history.

Looks like the Olympic Games may be the only ones to have broke the centenary games where they first started ideal.

Well, not exactly.  The 1996 football finals and women's volleyball prelim matches* were played in Athens, Georgia.  ;)  So . . . even there, tradition was sort of "followed."   (And then, of course, Paris is hosting the Centennial of its last hosting in 1924 -- so you can't fault the Olympics for not trying.   wink - wink

* - the ones that were removed from Cobb County went to Athens, GA.

Actually, altough it would be nice to have a World Cup in my side of the continent again, i do see two ways that could happen, even if it would require a bit of rule tweaking.

  • China has gotten rights to a expanded Club World Cup that is in development hell at the moment, the centennial World Cup going to the inventors of Cuju could be both a compensation prize and a bit of lore trip for our ball kicked with the foot game. (This goes out of the window if anything happens to Taiwan in the followiing days...if FIFA cares enough, that is.) This would require FIFA to allow AFC to host again early after 2022.
  •  There is only one continent that the World Cup final tournament for the men´s haven´t touched yet: Oceania. Of course, that would imply a bid that at the very least includes Australia and New Zealand, who are conveninently joint-hosting the Women´s World Cup next year, and close to the host election of 2030. If they try for this one, again with a bit of rule tweaking to AFC so Australia can join in, that could be a enticing proposal.

We need time to see who will really rise here and also check the political climate at FIFA to see who really goes to be favorites. For one, the COMNEBOL bid from South America will more likely be supported by UEFA, since these two become closer politically recently, and also have a bit of opposition going with the current FIFA leadership, all because of the expanded Club World Cup debacle, if i recall correctly.

Time will tell...

I agree with you on that. The Centennial FIFA World Cup should be held in Argentina-Uruguay-Chile-Paraguay since their the favorites.

You're joking.  The only 2 countries of any consequence in that grouping are OZ and NZ.  And doesn't OZ play with the Asian nations and NZ with South America?  If so, how can they even be considered a serious hosting bloc -- for 48 teams?  Please get real.

Guilga was talking playing with them also supporting the South American joint bid.

New Zealand is actually a member of OFC, the Oceania federation, but I think it makes some sense the confusion since they always had to play a intercontinental playoff to get to the world cup with no direct entry, the one reason that made Australia switch to Asia in first place. And, as I said, it would require a bit of rule tweaking to get a AFC nation hosting so early after 2022.

And considering they're hosting the next Women's World Cup in two confederations, the first one with 32 teams in a new expansion, you would think that would not be as big of a problem as it seems. Hosting 48 is indeed quite a jump, but remember that this FIFA is more open to co-hosting then ever before.

SKorea leader proposes Asian nations co-host 2030 World Cup

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s new liberal president has offered to co-host the 2030 World Cup with rival North Korea and other Northeast Asian countries as part of efforts to promote peace in the region, his office said Monday.

Moon Jae-in made the proposal during a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the presidential Blue House in Seoul, Moon’s office said in a statement.

“If neighboring Northeast Asian countries including South and North Korea can host the World Cup, I think that would contribute to peace between South and North Korea and in the Northeast Asian region,” Moon told Infantino, according to Moon’s office. “I would like President Infantino to have interests on this matter.”

Infantino was quoted as saying he respects Moon’s idea and that he will talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping about it when the two meet later this week.

China and Japan reportedly want to host World Cup games individually. Also, last week the prospect for Moon’s push to expand cross-border exchanges with North Korea was thrown into doubt as North Korea rejected a Seoul civic group’s offer to provide relief items.

Before taking office last month, Moon had said he would try to reach out to North Korea and improve ties badly strained over the North’s nuclear and missile programs. Since Moon’s May 10 inauguration, however, North Korea has conducted several missile launches in a show of its resolve to continue its weapons development program to cope with what it calls U.S. hostility.

The two Koreas have been divided along the world’s most heavily fortified border since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. About 28,500 American troops are stationed in South Korea as deterrence against potential aggression from North Korea.

The organizers of the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, hope North Korea will take part in the Winter Games.

North Korea boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, both held in Seoul, but it has since attended other major international sports events held in the South.

South Korea and Japan co-hosted the 2002 World Cup.

This is an exciting proposal from President Moon Jae-in of South Korea. The idea of co-hosting the 2030 World Cup with North Korea and other Northeast Asian countries is a great way to promote peace in the region. It would be wonderful to see the World Cup bring people together in this way, and we hope that President Infantino will give it serious consideration.

Are we still labouring under the delusion - even after Beijing and Sochi - that giving sports events to these countries helps "bring peace" to their regions.

Carry on drinking the Kool Aid.

Not really sure what to make of this

They have hosted the UEFA Euro 2012 with Poland, but i don't know if they could host FIFA World Cup 2030 with Spain and Portugal.

I heard news today to Ukraine will join Spain and Portugal in the bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

I wonder where will Ukraine use their venues in which cities if awarded. Maybe Kyiv at the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex and Odessa at a new stadium.

Either you're living under a rock or you're a troll.

Moon Jae In is no longer president (good riddance by the way). So the pampering to a backstabbing nation like NK can finally stop and SK can do serious candidacies.

Also why would anyone vote for the country which did the worst case of Refball in the history of World Cups? (Yeah, sorry. I'm still hurt about 2002.)

Yay. More Virtue Signaling. This is totally not going to drive the bid to the ground and turn it into a logistical nightmare.
