I Love Minneapolis
Hey guys, I am wondering if anyone has information on what venues were used for Atlanta, and the capacity at the time of the games as well as the distance from Cent. Olympic Park. Thanks, ILM.

The amazing part is that about 90% of the venues you listed are all still in heavy use. Isn't everything except what was up in Stone Mountain being used? baron-pierreIV
Pretty much...except: - the velodrome was dismantled - the Conyers Equestrian center gets by with rodeos, etc. - the Stn Mountain tennis center supposedly is in disrepair and can't get into the major pro circuit - the beach volleyball and Lake Lanier venues were also temporary Otherwise, everything else gets a fair workout. Velodromes are a waste of money to start out with. Anyone who builds a permanent one should have their head examined. That said, however, Montreal's velodrome was converted into the Biosphere and is quite beautiful. And beach volleyball/rowing venues are usually temporary to start out with in all Olympics. So pretty much the tennis center is the only venue not in use. Others could have learned from Atlanta :glare:

BSTOUT1221
I know they've tried to get a tennis event going out at the Stone Mountain Tennis Complex and in the first few years after 1996, they had Agassi and Sampras and other big names come play but the tournaments never got enough momentum going to make the venue sustainable. Last time I was in Stone Mountain, I tried to get to the tennis center but it was blocked from the public. The only other venue I see on the list not in use is the Omni which was torn down and a new arena was built in its place, Phillips Arena and it definitely is in heavy use. And same thing with Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium which was torn down so the Olympic Stadium could be converted to Turner Field. I think Atlanta was smart to update and renovate a lot of existing college gyms and stadiums for sports. The colleges and universities got newer facilities which are all still in use and ACOG came out not having to find funds to build new stadia/arenas. No public debt and high maintenance costs like Athens is struggling with now!
Guardian
On a side note, with Atlanta having hosted an Olympic Games already, can this be the next one for the city, too? Atlanta World Expo 2015
