Has anyone got footage of today's opening ceremony of the Women's Rugby World Cup? media here in NZ were saying that the ceremony would rival the Superbowl halftime show. Rumoured cost of the how is $150 mil NZD.

Here it is... the opening ceremony of the women's rugby world cup.

The NZ media and organisers promised a show to rival the Superbowl half-time show. i don't know where the 150 million ceremony budget went (probably to taika and co's bank account) but the fans interviewed after the ceremony said it was like nothing they had ever witnessed before in NZ - the best opening ceremony to a rugby world cup ever.

That's over US$80 million- Chinese Olympic budgeting!

May in reality be the cost of the whole tournament ...

I really didn't see where the money went to be honest. one Auckland spectator described it as the best opening ceremony anywhere ever lol

NZ'ers are very easy to awe lol

Anyways, the rest of the ceremony was decent. Again, like the CWG, the sense of normalcy is finally returning.

Here's another video with a better audio quality.

A normal cauldron lighting as we've seen many times

Well today on BBC1, we got to see an absolutely spectacular addition to the pantheon of ceremonial cockup, courtesy of the Rugby League World Cup. I don't follow RL at all, but I thought I'd see what its opening ceremony would be like... excruciating is the answer. It's something you really would have to see, but sadly there's nothing on YouTube yet, maybe because they want to pretend it never happened. This BBC News report sums it up though:

Saudi Games 2022 Opening Ceremony

Do we need even more attention for a medieval regime‘s despicable attempts at sportswashing? I‘m already done with Inside The Games featuring this spectacle prominently and making themselves a PR tool for a murderous gang which holds the fossil fuel addicted world to ransom…

Godawful ceremony and before people attack me for saying i'm biased/brainwashed to hate whatever they do, at least Qatar has always put consistently good shows (even though almost all of the talent are former staff/cast from Sydney 2000  ). But kudos at least for letting female performers participate, I guess?

The scene with the Saudi Flag being raised and shaking weirdly as the anthem was being performed made me cringe a lot in the inside.

I mean, now that the world has a large set of more important issues than hostng a 15 day circus, and most serious countries are uninterested in it (unless some of their people in charge are trying to do a dick measuring contest of some form), its only natural all the undemocratic and weird countries where people's opinions are not considered are getting them. And as long as the "useful idiots" are always around, that's the only thing that matters to them (both the IOC and FIFA for example).

I think its time both the fans and teams should take radical actions rather than just wearing an armband or doing a political statement in social media in order to send a clear message to them. Just boycott the whole thing.

Qatar uses David Atkins Enterprises in the past which did the Sydney and Vancouver Ceremonies

I know. And the Doha 2006 ceremonies even had the same Sydney 2000 composer if i'm not wrong (at least the one who did the song Nature).

Most of the cultural portion of the Albertville 1992 opening as seen in the old Antenne 2 channel (today's France 2) with original french commentary.

I wonder what people think of Albertville 30 years later.....I loved it, but I suspect others dont  :)

I know it was kinda eclipsed due to Calgary and Lillehammer being generally considered much more memorable sport wise, but I still liked the early 90s vibe of the games and the fact the ceremonies tried to be much more different than usual. I personally liked them although I know some might probably differ. On a personal level I preferred them over Calgary ceremonies but I put them slighty below Lillehammer because of the later's perfect winter/countryside feel.

Pele was the final torchbearer at the 2011 World Military Games held in Rio. Possibly due to the fact he served during a time in the army.
