Commonwealth Games 2022: Birmingham beats Liverpool to lead England bid

Birmingham has been chosen over Liverpool for England's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has backed the West Midlands city which would have to convince the Commonwealth Games Federation it should stage the event.

However, it must first be decided whether to go ahead with a formal bid.

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia likely to be the main rival after Durban was stripped of the event in March.

The South African city originally won the bidding process in 2015 but the Commonwealth Games Federation was not convinced it could successfully host the event and started a new search for a host city.

Both Birmingham and Liverpool expressed early interest and put together competing bids.

Birmingham's proposal to create the UK's largest permanent athletics stadium supplemented by four indoor arenas was central to its bid.

KL is putting a bid forward, but it doesn't seem like it's getting Malaysian government support. So it looks like the 2022 CWG will be in Birmingham. My initial thought in this thread was that 2022 would be too soon for an English bid to get things together, but the cities and the government have shown intent in getting things done this quickly. So I really don't see the government pulling the rug from under Birmingham's feet now.

Well good on all concerned - especially Brum. Good to see some attention on the Midlands for once* :)

Will be interesting to see what happens at Stratford - can't see the Hammers sticking with the current Olympic Stadium setup for very long without kicking up a fuss if they see that the country's athletics hub has moved.

*Although it probably knocks Cardiff out for a while...silly Cardiff, not recognising a golden chance when they see one.

London's stadium was always meant to be a modern athletics stadium for the capital, and West Ham loudly proclaimed that their bid for the stadium would ensure that promise was kept, that they could make football and athletics work. Karen Brady six years ago:

"This is not Spurs versus West Ham, it’s Spurs versus West Ham, the borough of Nehwam, UK Athletics, the communities of east London. There was a promise made [to the IOC] in the Queen’s name, and we have to honour it.”

If they don't like it now they're in there, they can suck on it. The alternative for them is to build themselves a new stadium somewhere else.

As a non-Brit Liverpool's plan seemed fairly crazy: floating arenas, an athletic stadium turned into a rectangular stadium within a couple of months turnaround, etc.

Birmingham's plans seem much more achievable. London's original plan of a 25,000 seat permanent athletics stadium with temporary seating to bring the stadium up to the standards of special events deserves to be tested.

Birmingham 2022 seems like an excellent opportunity to present a medium sized multi event games.

There are plenty of excellent facilities in and around the city, and even where there may be a need to create some facilities like a velodrome, acquatic facilities etc, there are options like the Derby Velodrome or and the ability to drop acquatic facilities into an existing arena means the expense of a new facility may not be required.

It pretty much looks done and dusted. Birmingham 2022.

It will be a great boost for the region and give another focal point of England outside that great meglaurban monster, London,  just as Manchester 2002 was (and probably the best CWGs hosted in the commercial era.).

A small update on the Birmingham situation from The Guardian:

Quote

...

It is understood there were concerns about how solid guarantees were around certain pledges in the bid, namely Birmingham City Council’s promise that it had secured land in the Perry Barr area of the city for a proposed Athletes’ Village. But government and the Birmingham 2022 bid team were hopeful that the setback would not be terminal.

The chief executive of Commonwealth Games England, Paul Blanchard, said: “We are confident that Birmingham’s bid demonstrates that the city has the ability to stage a fantastic Commonwealth Games in 2022. It was a huge effort to put such a comprehensive bid together in such a short timescale. We’ve always said that even though Birmingham was the only city to submit a bid there would still be a few hurdles to clear before a decision was made on formally awarding the Games.”

Well, bugger me...

Kuala Lumpur may launch a late bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Malaysia's Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin revealed today.

The country had investigated putting themselves forward following the decision in March to strip Durban of the 2022 Commonwealth Games but did not submit a bid by the deadline of September 30.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), however, decided early this month to extend the deadline to November 30 after Birmingham in England were the only city to put in a bid.

Khairy has now promised to review the decision and discuss the situation with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Birmingham 'unlikely to face new Commonwealth Games bids'

The West Midlands Mayor says he's confident in Birmingham's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Today is the deadline for bids to be submitted to host the event after it was extended from September.

That was because Birmingham's application, the only bidder then, was judged to be "not fully compliant".

A final decision won't be announced until later in the year.

We do not believe there's anyone going to come in at the 11th hour. That doesn't mean that today anyone turns around and says it's yours because our bid still has to be assessed, agreed by the Commonwealth Games Federation but I am confident that will happen over the next few weeks."

Andy Street - West Midlands Mayor

Three cities have joined Birmingham to contest the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The English city was the only interested party before the original 30 September deadline but its bid was deemed "not fully compliant".

Organisers now say they have received "updates" from Australia, Canada and Malaysia but did not confirm firm bids.

Kuala Lumpur and Victoria are thought to be the cities involved from Malaysia and Canada respectively.

Although all the hoops the CGF are placing does feel a little reminiscent of Uefa's desperation to avoid going to Turkey. Still its better that they take the time to do it properly than rush in - if they'd shown this diligence the first time we wouldn't have been in this mess in the first place.
