What about Vancouver? If Victoria is still interested, they could form a strong partnership.

It takes three to four hours to drive from Victoria to Vancouver. Ironically the high speed boat from Victoria to Seattle is faster. Logistically I don't think Victoria + Vancouver would work.

Unfortunately I think the modern Commonwealth Games are probably a bit too large for Victoria. It is the size of Aberdeen, Blackpool, Christchurch and Canberra rather than a major city like Edinburgh, Liverpool, Auckland or Perth.

A floating swimming pool is to be the centrepiece of Liverpool's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 50m pool structure will be built on the water near Albert Dock. There will be seating for 5,000 spectators.

The city's bid team and Mayor Joe Anderson hope the pool will showcase the city to a potential TV audience of more than a billion.

Liverpool is battling against Birmingham to be England's bidder for the games.

The pool will be fixed to the walls of a dock, but will rest on the water.

Once the games are over the stands would be removed and the pool would be opened to the public as a city centre lido.

As expected, Everton's new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock is set to become the main athletics venue.

The details of Liverpool's bid will be unveiled later on Friday in a presentation featuring Commonwealth Games gymnastics gold medallist Beth Tweddle, swimmer Steve Parry, and three-time Commonwealth medallist and boxing champion Tony Bellew.

Liverpool 2022:

"triple jump, long jump and pole vault are proposed to be held on the dockside by Mann Island"
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-sport-commonwealthgames-liverpool-idUSKBN1971OX

Looks like relocating these events may be part of the solution which allows them to convert a football stadium to T&F (not sure what the IAAF and CGF will make of it though).

Still think the ends are more problematic though, so intrigued to see the final solution.

"Our plan is to install a temporary track after the final home game of the 2021/22 season, which will then be removed before the 2022/23 season starts in the autumn"

Woah! Hampden was out of action for a year when they implemented a similar solution there. Is this really doable? I guess it's just a question of manpower. but still!

I take it they are joking  There is such a thing as over-ambition - especially when they're getting a shorter than normal lead time. For 2026, maybe but for a short-notice quick fix, Birmingham's gotta have the upper hand with having a track stadium in situ with no football obligation - not to mention the NEC.

"Problematic" is an understatement. A 400 metre running track is at minimum nearly 160 metres from extemity to extremity. That's almost the length of the entire ground footprint of the current Everton stadium at Goodison Park, stands included. The only way it can possibly work is if the permanent end stands for the new stadium are not built until after the Games.

Or they could do something like Atletico's new stadium or Wembley, both designed to take temporary tracks, where you basically lose the whole lower tier to the athletics platform. But that doesn't fit in with Everton's promise of an intimate stadium with fans close to the pitch and couldn't possibly be constructed and deconstructed during pre-season, as has been promised in the Mayor's letter.

You're probably right that they'll leave one or both ends unfinished. I can't think of another way really.

Birmingham to unveil vision and logo for 2022 Commonwealth Games bid on Monday

Birmingham will officially unveil their logo and vision for their bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday (June 19), it has been revealed. .

The launch of the English city's attempt to secure the hosting rights for the Games in five years' time comes after the deadline to formally submit the Preliminary Phase Questionnaire to the Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit yesterday.

The Bid Committee are asking people to back the bid on Twitter using the hashtag #BrumBid2022.

Also, Heart of England would've been better given that the Heart of the UK is quite a lot nearer Liverpool than Brum. Better logo than Liverpool IMO - do we know when any other cities outside England release theirs?

Ha, just shows how opinions differ. Infinitely worse than Liverpool's imho.

Liverpool's has a slickness to it, and looks like some thought has gone into the design and its meaning.

This looks like someone's found a paint splodge on shutterstock, put a emoticon heart on top of it then typed BIRMINGHAM 2022 without changing the default font or colour. Bloody awful!

Yes, I get the impression that that is a regular problem for West Midlanders- they can't quite grasp how relatively close to London they are, too close to be of much use in establishing "out of London" hubs for the nation.

First glimse of proposed Brum stadium...

#Brum will strengthen its ‘City of Running’ status through improving facilities at @alex_stadium & increasing seating capacity. #BrumBid2022

Yes, the Alexander Stadium is (at 12,700 current capacity) almost literally half-way to the required standard already, a definite plus. So now we have a situation where Birmingham has an athletic stadium; Sheffield and Leeds have suitable aquatic centres; Derby has a velodrome ...

Victoria is estimating the cost of the games at $955 million including a new stadium and village. They must be smoking something to impair their thoughts, because there is no way that will cost so little. Also interesting is 3 sports proposed for Vancouver, including badminton/table tennis at the Richmond Oval. If they do host then we will have the Winter Olympics reusing Summer Olympics venues and then later in the year Commonwealth Games using Winter Olympics venues. Nothing better than that for legacy!

Victoria though is a longshot at best.

Why does Victoria need a new arena? Their Western Hockey League team plays in a very nice and very new arena. (Aside: save the WHL in Seattle! Say "no" to the NHL!) I can only imagine it would be a temporary arena.

Victoria would be a good host the Vancouver Whitecaps 2 in either the USL or a future Canadian premier League, but they would only need 6,000 seats for that. So perhaps 6,000 permanent + 14,000 temporary seats for a rugby stadium.

I don't think it's that unreasonable a price if they are only re-using existing facilities and building two semi-temporary structures. The real issue is whether that is good enough. I would guess "no."

I think the culture of the city is perfect for the Commonwealth Games, though. I think the majority of Victorians wish they were still a part of the British Empire. Half of the city is either inspired by British culture or the royal family.

D-day for Liverpool and Birmingham

A decision on whether to commit more than half a billion pounds of public money, the biggest sum to be spent on staging a sports event in England since the London 2012 Olympic Games, is facing the government over the next four weeks.

At stake is the opportunity to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games: Liverpool and Birmingham are bidding against each other to be England’s nominee. Within the next week, ministers will decide which city gets the nod and then, before the end of the month, issue a final verdict on whether to put forward a bid.

The cost of hosting the Commonwealth Games in either city would be between £500 million and £680 million, with 75 per cent coming from the Treasury and 25 per cent from the city council. There would also need to be a contingency fund of about £100 million. Ticket sales and sponsorship would also be expected to bring in at least £120 million.

As with everything in Whitehall at the moment, Brexit is casting a big shadow over the decision. However, those involved in the bids hope that the government will see hosting the Commonwealth Games as the first post-Brexit opportunity for the country to make a major statement about its new independence from Europe, and both cities are pushing the event as an opportunity for Britain to develop new trade links with its fellow Commonwealth members.

The incentive for both cities is obvious — it would mean close to half a billion pounds of central government money being invested in the city to help regenerate areas.

Should be Brum. For practicality if nothing else. Plus it'd be nice to see our actual second city host something & get known - Liverpool's plan seems very overambitious & there's so many pitfalls with a track stadium & football club. Plus, everyone knows Liverpool - & Manchester was last so it's the Midlands' turn.
