So, wait, there's a Victoria in Canada and in Australia. Or is that like the requirement to be a Commonwealth country... you have to have a Victoria.

 There are "Victoria"s this, that and those all over the former Empire which reached it's height in her reign...Could've been so much worse if her half formed mel-bred Teutonic imbecile lame freak of a grandson had got things going his way a hundred years ago...

Who needs another Oz city to bid, when the bush now wants in on the action?

They even have a logo

By far the most ridiculous bid i have ever heard of. I think someone got the date wrong for this announcement April 1 is April fools day. I live in Ballarat and the venues they are suggesting here are in need of more than an upgrade to bring them up to standard. Dont even get me started on travel times between venues. Each sport would have to have its own village as the shortest travel time would be almost 2 hours. The wont be the peoples games the will be the sitting on a bus for hours games.

If Australia wants to put its hand up again because no one else wants to bid, then why not Adelaide? They made a bid for 1998 and failed against Kuala Lumpur.

There's far more infrastructure since then and I'm sure the Adelaide Oval can easily accommodate an athletics track, or have a reduced seating with a raised track (which of course also helps with ceremonies).

It seems like the missing link to complete the "set". But then Adelaide did make an early run for 2018, backed away as they saw the then still rising costs and Auckland hinting another go (although later revealed as an unauthorized proposal). Gold Coast jumped in when "Auckland" pulled out.

The CWGs are now looking towards regional hosting and this is something Australia could lead with.

Not just in the commonwealth, but anywhere the English and Scottish settled.

To be honest I am not a fan of colonial countries using European place names, but that's a debate best left alone.

Per my source, four countries will forward letters of interests. Keep in mind this is just the country saying they are interested, and countries may enter more than one city.

Australia

England

Canada - Federal government support was received today.

Fourth one is a mystery!

New Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit to meet English cities interested in hosting 2022

A new Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit set up by the British Government is to hold key talks with the English cities interested in replacing Durban as hosts of the 2022 event.

London will be among the cities attending the meeting after a spokesperson for the Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed to insidethegames they would be interested in steppng in.

Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester have all already declared they would like to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

It is believed Commonwealth Games England discussed which bid to back at its Board meeting today but did not make a final decision...

...Funding will be among the main topics discussed when the cities meet the new Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit headed by Nick Pontefract, formerly the senior civil servant responsible for sport for the UK Government.

Other issues on the agenda will be about the possibility of Manchester and Liverpool joining forces and forming a "Northern Powerhouse" bid.

Struggling to see where a stadium is coming from in Liverpool or Liverpool/Manchester. Confirmation today that Everton will be entirely funding their new dockside stadium would seem to rule out the kind of solution we saw in Manchester in 2002 - I guess a platform track like Glasgow 2014 is still a possibility but that would require Everton to compromise on the stadium's design. I'm not sure what incentive there is for them to do that.

They could maybe stick a few temporary stands on the National Speedway Stadium !

Exclusive: Birmingham and Liverpool left in race for 2022 Commonwealth Games after London and Manchester pull out

Birmingham and Liverpool have been left battling to get the nomination to be England's candidate to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after rivals London and Manchester withdrew from the process.

A meeting between the UK Government’s Department of Media, Culture and Sport, Commonwealth Games England and cities interested in hosting the Games took place last Wednesday (May 10).

A delegation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) were also present at the meeting in London.

Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester had initially all declared they would like to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

London were also present at the meeting.

But by the deadline set by the British Government of last Friday (May 12) only Birmingham and Liverpool had officially applied.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan confirmed to insidethegames today that the capital would not be taking their interest any further.

"It is great that four countries - including several UK cities - have expressed an interest in bidding to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games," they told insidethegames.

"While London remains focused on delivering the biggest sports event of this year – the IPC and IAAF World Athletics Championships – we wish the UK bidders every success in winning the rights to host the Games in 2022."

Manchester have also withdrawn their application.

The city which hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games, however, remains prepared to assist Liverpool.

The possibility of Manchester and Liverpool joining forces and forming a "Northern Powerhouse" bid had been mooted in recent weeks.

Manchester could offer venues for track cycling and swimming if necessary, but the focus of the event would be on Liverpool.

This is a full mess being explored in a terrible way.

Interesting you see it that way. Okay, granted, the stripping of the games from Durban is very unfortunate and hardly positive for the CGF at all. But, you gotta remember, at the time it was a very popular decision, with many of us here, myself included, but still regarding it as the best and most attractive choice. It's only since then that it became clear that much of that regard was a case of wishful thinking and hoping.

But that said, now that the CGF has bitten the bullet and made the hard choice, it's not as negative a result as many, again including myself, would have feared. The CGF are not rushing precipitously into a decision, and we have bids from four countries, and multiple cities in at least two of those. In other words, they've got more cities applying for these games than they got in the past three formal bid cycles - 2014, 2018 and 2022 _ combined. Quite remarkable, considering.  Indeed, it's interesting and instructive to see how it's being received in the bid following press:

Enthusiasm to host Commonwealth Games should prove important lesson for Olympic Movement

So, yeah, sure it's a less-than-ideal situation that the CGF has found itself in, but it's certainly not playing out as direly as it could have.

Another factor to consider is that when Durban were awarded the Games...The Global economy was still clearing away a residual GFC funk and there was still trepidation as to what hosting a VERY large sporting event would be like. Glasgow showed the way but most Nations just didn't want to risk it.

Now, with most OECD Nation economies starting to boom again, a little more spending is occurring and new concepts into hosting very large multi sport events are now allowing multiple cities and/or regions to consider joint hosting.

It would be sad if four years from now we see Durban or another South African raising it's hand but then being reminded of "what happened last time" - ask Denver how that feels.

There was some sort of venue tour today in Toronto regarding a 2022 bid, not entirely sure who was involved, but CGC did tweet photos.

With the recent protest against Zuma's government, it will be telling if there's a political swift as happened with 2015 municipal elections. Ex. under this new administration, Johannesburg has upgraded certain social and economical levels.

What about Vancouver? If Victoria is still interested, they could form a strong partnership.

No interest. Victoria is Canada;s only bid.
