Pyeongchang 2018 Transport planning

Recommended Posts

Hi all, we are new here to the Games Bids forums, although we have visited the website for news in the past.

I wanted to help some people with transport information seeing it is not readily available. We have been to PyeongChang a few times, and transport was one of our biggest worries.

KTX from Incheon will run 16 times a day, 10 carriages, 2 are drivers compartments, 8 for passengers on which at least 2 will be for accredited persons (athletes, media, officials). Each carriage carries 45 passengers and tickets will go on sale in December via Korean Rails website for around Won 50,000 (US$45) each way. The only issue is accredited persons take priority so with some schedules or flights arriving, some trains will have more than the 2 carriages reserved.

KTX from Seoul will run 35 times a day, 10 carriages, 2 are drivers compartments, 8 for passengers on which at least 1 will be for accredited persons. Journey time is around 2 hours.

PyeongChang 2018 are reviewing the schedule but because the KTX is a separate company, they need to work directly with them on their transport plan.

Public Transport plans will be released in December including the network of buses they will use in the province to move everyone. The actual main transport hub is not in Alpensia, but in Jinbu, so those from the coastal zone will need to travel further and then back track to any venues in Alpensia.

We have the following Transport Map to assist with anyone for the Games and we are happy to also provide any advice or answer any questions you may have.

This is very helpful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Of course, there are still many questions to be answered... hopefully we'll get much more info as time goes by.

Its our pleasure, the information is not always available but we are able to get access to more information that is not yet public or at least provide first hand experience of what is going on.

Thank you for the information.  This basically confirms my fears relative to transportation from Seoul.  If you figure 7 cars per train, this equates to about 315 people per train.  I assume the trains will run for at least 16 hours per day (probably more).  This means that there will be slightly over 2 trains per hour to Seoul and 1 train per hour to Incheon.  This means the total capacity will be about 1,000 people per hour.  Even if they "stack" the trains and double the capacity during peak hours, you are looking at a maximum of probably 2,000 people being transported per hour.

This capacity is not nearly enough to cover the people who will need to go to Seoul.

Don't forget that at least two carriages will  be for accredited personals and athletes - capacity is around 20,000 a day but they anticipate around 70% of people from Seoul will drive.

We are strongly recommending that clients attending the Games for a long period of time (more than 3 days) do not stay in Seoul because of the high cost of the KTX as well as no guarantee of seating.

You can find good accommodation on the east coast similar to what you would pay in Seoul without the $90 return ticket and 4-5 hours of travel time a day.

The Games will be compact and easy to transit between venues once the extended bus system is released
