I should have faith that Americans will do the right thing. But then again, the mere fact Trump's got this far means it's hard to take any re-assurance that common sense will win out. krow Posted November 8, 2016 Report Share Posted November 8, 2016 (edited) i voted in useless california fwiw. but i also voted in a competent senatorial candidate and against the death penalty (again), and for making those annoying plastic grocery bags illegal. also for more money for transportation in the LA area. voted for pot legalization even though i only tried it once while drunk and don't know if felt it. didn't vote for the deeply flawed condoms on porn stars bill though. the presidential race is a shitshow, but with sex, drugs, and death on the ballot, there was plenty of exciting stuff on there after all. I'm afraid this will only make certain people like Le Pen in France, for example, get a huge boost. Looks like intolerance, hatred and protectionism is the new trend for the next years and sadly we're going to have to deal with it. Though remember, there is no evil which lasts 100 years. I hope sanity comes back to people very soon. That is if we're still alive in the next 4 years to come. I feel like the only good thing that ever happened this year was the Cubs victory. Seriously. They pick the most colorful, charismatic buffoon instead of someone who will actually get things fixed because they're boring. Countries have the leaders they deserve. Today I did something I've never, ever, before done over a political result. I wept. For America. For my American friends (confirmation bias admission here - all my American friends I know have been pro-Hillary, orat least strongly anti-Trump). And for the world. It's a scarier place now. I'm rather sobered and worried about the direction our planet takes. The UK chooses to leave the EU from which it profited strongly; Colombia decides against a peace treaty which would have ended decades of death, violence and suffering; the Philippines have elected a total nutjob president; Austria is set to elect a right-wing populist president; populists throughout the world are on the rise, and such is hate, intolerance, denial of facts and the popularity of conspiracy theories. Combine this with the madness surrounding formerly inspiring sports events like the Olympics, and then you get a very worrying picture: Things which mankind drew inspiration from in the past count no more. Safeties and certainties do exist less and less. Even if I strongly disagree with those who voted Trump, for the Brexit, against the Colombian peace treaty etc.: I think one has to take those voices more serious than ever before in order to find a way to combat those rising populist sentiments and movements. But that will be tough, especially since no one in the "rational camp" seems to have found a recipe against those sentiments and movements so far. I guess we have to hope (even if that leads to worrying effects for the US and the world) that as soon as they have to govern, those irrational populist movements will prove to be what they are: phonies. Trump has promised amazingly much to voters who are already disillusioned, disappointed and angry. I'm pretty sure he will step on quite a lot of feet there as soon as he he won't deliver. It may be somewhat colder and I have slept, but the feeling of not being able to fully comprehend the enormity of what is happening in the United States is very much the same as that around Brexit. While I am deeply, deeply concerned about the potential implications of a Trump victory, it seems clear that he has tapped into exactly the same types of fear and anger that the Brexit campaign did here. I am and many Americans are tired with both party's establishment, but only the Republicans nominated the person who followed through with that desire.
