Accommodation for Tokyo 2020

Recommended Posts

Considering that we don't even have a transportation plan for PyeongChang, I'm not expecting a transportation plan for Tokyo anytime soon. And as you point out, they've got to do something to increase throughput to the harbor islands. But, hey, I'm having ignoring work and playing around with maps. Here's another transportation map. It does a good job of showing the Rinkai line, which I overlooked in my early post. The Rinkai line seems to have ideal access to the harbor venues. The area around the Osaki station could be a good place to stay... looks somewhat boring, but has a number of inexpensive hotels (with tiny rooms.)

Swiss firm to open 'hotel ship' during Tokyo Games

Sunday, May 27, 22:34

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it has chosen a Switzerland-based shipping company to operate a "hotel ship" during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The "hotel ship" concept is one of the measures being taken by the central government to address an anticipated accommodation shortage during the sporting events.

Tokyo city officials say they chose the Japanese arm of the Switzerland-based MSC Cruises to operate a "hotel ship" after inviting public applications.

Officials say the 65,000-ton cruise ship "MSC Lirica" is expected to be used as a temporary hotel. The mid-size cruiser boasts about 1,000 staterooms and can accommodate up to 2,600 guests.

The ship will be docked at a pier in Koto Ward. The Tokyo government and the shipping company will discuss details of its operation after signing a memorandum.

The central government will also allow several other piers on Tokyo Bay to be used for such temporary accommodations.

Wonder if it will be used by athletes (like Norwegian Getaway in Rio) or media (Norwegian Jade in Sochi). Maybe even for public use?

I planned a Tokyo trip with my friends this year. Since corona is still a thing we will probably postpone it to next year. As some members mentioned Shinjuku or Shibuya are a good option. Tokyo Bay is even better. From my point of view hotels won't be that occupied due to Covid-19 next year.

Since I was quite busy, my friends planned the trip. Unfortunately they are not into the Olympics and researched basic sighseeing points.

This is an usefull link https://www.travelspring.de/staedtereise-tokio/ in case you end up in Tokyo and the Olympics are going to be postponed again due to corona virus.

My friends are originally from Germany, so the page is in German. But you can easily translate it into english. They said, it's a good overview.

I would love to see Tokyo one day. The possibility to combine the Olympics with a trip seems so great. Its a pitty that traveling seems not possible the next months. I hope you can go on your trip to Tokyo when Covid-19 is no more. Fingers crossed!

I was planing to visit Tokyo as an exchange student next month and work at the olympic games as volunteer. Unfortunately this plan was crashed bei corona. My exchange have been postponed to upcoming fall. Regrettable the oylmpic games will be over then, but I am also happy the exchange is not canceled entirely.

You may still have a chance.;)

Tokyo Olympics may see 500 foreign volunteers allowed into Japan

Around 500 foreign volunteers may be allowed into Japan under special entry rules to assist with the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer, sources with knowledge of the matter said Monday.

Local organizers have ruled out accepting volunteers from abroad, in principle, as a precaution to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, but could make an exception for roughly 500 people with specialized skills necessary for running the games.

People whose roles cannot easily be performed by somebody living in Japan, such as experts in certain languages, will be selected from a pool of roughly 2,000 volunteers living overseas.

According to the organizers, foreign nationals made up roughly 10% of a total 80,000 volunteers before the pandemic forced the one-year postponement of the games.

The organizing bodies of the Olympics and Paralympics formally decided Saturday that the games will be staged without overseas spectators due to the pandemic.

The government will consider ways to permit the entry of the specialist volunteers from overseas. Japanese citizens living outside Japan are also expected to be allowed to volunteer.
