Will this Opening Ceremony, scheduled to start at dusk in Rio (6:15 pm local time; 7:15 pm South Georgia time; 9:15 pm Iceland/Azores time; 10:15 pm British/Portuguese time) be the first live worldwide TV extravaganza in history not to be starting in the primetime 8 pm golden hour anywhere on the planet?

That's still within that hour. All the better for us on this side of the pond - but I wonder why they've decided to start so early?

For a start, it's not a weekend, so a ceremony finishing at midnight local time is inadvisable- particularly if they're encouraging people to bring their kids. Also, Britain's Channel 4 is the Paralympic equivalent of NBC, and starting the live broadcast in the UK while most people are still awake is a smart move.

Channel 4 has attempted to fill the remaining hole between 8pm and the ceremony start by launching the new series of The Last Leg (with Adam Hills & chums) at 8pm, then leading into the ceremony from 9pm. Against that, of course, there's the problem that it's Wednesday evening, which means BBC1's The Great British Bake Off will be utterly dominant in the golden hour, followed at 9pm by the first in a new series of the popular drama Our Girl.

In that respect, Channel 4 might be better off letting people know that the Opening Ceremony doesn't really get going until half-way through the BBC1 news bulletin !

Yes, but that was within the 8-9pm hour, local time. I don't think this Rio ceremony will start within the 8-9pm hour anywhere at all, which is most unusual.

Okay, I thought you meant on the hour. And then talked about 8pm "anywhere on the planet".

In that case - Sydney's 2000 OC began at 7pm local time.
