Rio 2016 Olympic beach volleyball Drawing of Lots Saturday in Gstaad
Gstaad, Switzerland, July 8, 2016 - The drawing of lots for beach volleyball competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Gstaad on Saturday after the conclusion of the afternoon matches at the Gstaad Major.
With 22 of the 24 berths in each gender’s competition already filled for the August 6-18 Rio Olympic competition, the final two men’s and women’s berth will be determined this weekend in the FIVB Continental Cup Finals in Russia where the matches begin Thursday in Sochi at the same site where two FIVB World Tour qualifying events were staged last September and this past May.
The top-six spots in each Rio 2016 pool for men and women have already been determined via the FIVB World Tour where 28 women’s and 30 men’s events were held from April 2015 through June 12, 2016. Brazil secured two spots in the top six in both the men’s and women’s competition by winning both gender’s 2015 FIVB World Championships along with having a second team qualify by finishing among the top teams on the FIVB World Tour.
Excluding Brazilians, the 15 highest ranked teams on the Olympic Ranking List as of June 13, 2016 earned one quota place for their national federation to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, respecting the maximum of two quota places per national federation.
Each team must have participated in a minimum of 12 official FIVB Olympic Qualification tournaments (FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, recognized Continental Tour Finals) scheduled from January 1, 2015 until June 12, 2016 should they wish to be selected by a qualified national federation.
An additional five Rio Olympic Games berths were rewarded to the Continental Cup winners from the African, Asian, European, NORCECA and South American confederations. The second- and third-place finishers from each confederation qualified for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Continental Cup Finals in Sochi. With host Russia receiving a “wild card” entry for the women’s Finals in Sochi, the fourth-place finishers for the European playoffs were also granted an opportunity to qualify for the Rio Games.

Watching my first glimpse of beach volleyball action now. And question - is al the action there scheduled for night? Seems a big pity to have it on such a draw card as Copacabana, but then not be able to show Copacabana at its best. Bondi looked great at Sydney's games, wanting to see Copacabana look the same this time round.

Just caught (an obvious replay of) the Aussie women versus Netherlands match. Not only do I have to say the venue looks great in the daytime (now THAT'S why Copacabana was going to be a great venue), but a fantastic, exciting match overall. Close all the way through (that neck and neck First set was nail biting). Whoo, so enthralling to watch (and, yes, it helped that our gals won).

F**k! (No, not at the result)

Brazil were one set up when I had to go and take a phone call then get caught up in business. Then I came back, the TV had switched to Aussie highlights (or what passed for highlights today), and I had to look here to see how it ended. So, did the crowd go wild?

Congrats Brazil - that's one you wanted. Glad for you. :)

Oh what a shame Brazil won a beach volleyball gold after the women failed to do so yesterday! I was hoping now more than ever after hearing y'all spent $10 million just on volleyball programs alone to try and take all 4 gold medals in beach and indoor volleyball that y'all would lose lol!

One gold, one silver and one of the indoor teams in the semifinal. Is this a bad result?  How many medals the us teams won in volleyball?

Was amazing to hear the national anthem in copacabana.
