baron-pierreIV
Uh-oh. Cuban men's national Indoor team may face sanctions and be in trouble for Rio. http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1039208/eight-cuban-volleyball-players-arrested-on-suspicion-of-aggravated-rape-in-finland
cubebox
Hmmmm. If Cuba gets rid of its quota, which team should be in for the games? CAN (2nd at the qualifiers) and MEX (3rd at the qualifiers) are already qualified for the OG. Should be AUS? (5th at the world qualifier 1) Should be CHI? (2nd at the world qualifier 2)

(2nd at the world qualifier 2) Whichever one of those 2 which has the higher score ratio, pts., etc. They'll probably push CHINA for higher TV ratings since there's only one Asian team, IRAN. Seems kinda impossible. Japan and Australia are above China in the World Ranking.
baron-pierreIV
Seems kinda impossible. Japan and Australia are above China in the World Ranking. Well, yeah, but it's also geographic distribution they look for in the Olympic Games. So right now, it's already the host & Argentina (2 SA), 4 from No. America; 4 from Europe; one from Africa and one from Asia. If Cuba is dropped, then I think it's either China or Japan to fill in. Of course, Serbia ia also a great team -- but that would mean FIVE European teams.
baron-pierreIV
Predictions: Brazilian men & France for the gold; USA & Brazilian women for the gold. But no same country has won BOTH M & W's gold since the USSR in Mexico in 1968.

But no same country has won BOTH M & W's gold since the USSR in Mexico in 1968. Haven't kept up with the women's, but based on how World League has been looking... I think all of the men's teams have a lot of work to do before they can remotely contain the Brazilian team.
LinkParkFn
I have to say it's going to be extremely difficult to find any team that has a chance at beating the Brazilian volleyball teams, particularly with the immense home court advantage they're going to have, though if I had to pick the women or men, the Brazilian women have to be the more clear cut favorites. FIVB ranks USA women 1 over #2 Brazil -- but the B's have the home court advantage and for some players like Thaisa, this is going to be their swan song; so it's going to be tough for the US women too; but they could do it if they stay healthy to the end. The Brazlian men have a deeper bench for them than the women.
neneu10
I think that the 4 Gold medals from Volleyball will go to Brazil this year. And we can see Brazil vs Brazil in both Beach Volleyball finals too.
cubebox
Brazil's women team just won the Grand Prix this year. And men's team is going to play the World League final today against Serbia. That's a good approach to what could happen at Rio.
baron-pierreIV
Well, Brazilian men lost to Serbia. I don't think the Brazilian women can do a 3-peat in Rio. That's just how the cookie crumbles. It will be the men's turn to win the gold...at home. France will get the silver. Italy, Russia or USA may bet bronze. On the women's side, the US gals may finally beat the Cariocas finally. Bronze will be between China and Serbia.
baron-pierreIV
Technical time-outs to be taken out for matches in Rio; to adhere to tight match schedule. http://www.fivb.com/en/about/news/rio-olympic-volleyball-to-be-played-without?id=63509 Also, if Russian and Cuban men's teams are in question for participating in Rio, which 2 men's indoor teams will fill in? Germany and Serbia?

baron-pierreIV
Ha! Brasilian indoor men squeak by a 3-1 victory over the French (my pick) to stay in the game. It looks like Brasil will face MORTAL enemy Argentina in the X-overs. Poor Argentina. US men may face Russia or Poland, depending on the draw tonight. Quater-final line-up just announced: Italy v. Iran (Italy for sure) USA v. Poland (Poland might have the slight edge unless they are off.) Canada v. Russia (Canada has been hot) Brazil v. Argentina (I don't envy the Argentines). Durban Sandshark
Lots of sadness in the Brazilian women's volleyball team camp. I knew they were due for a letdown coming into Rio De Janeiro. Ex-teammate Fofao got emotional on SporTV immediately after the China QF loss in her analysis, saying she was "proud" of her old teammates like Fabiana, who was also emotional as she bows out internationally with the loss. And wants them to think about all the good times they had winning gold. Well, one less hurdle for the USA to finally get that elusive women's volleyball gold but they must look at Japan first. http://sportv.globo.com/site/programas/rio-2016/noticia/2016/08/em-conversa-com-fabiana-fofao-se-emociona-e-diz-orgulho-de-voces.html https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://sportv.globo.com/site/programas/rio-2016/noticia/2016/08/em-conversa-com-fabiana-fofao-se-emociona-e-diz-orgulho-de-voces.html&prev=search
baron-pierreIV
I think it will be a USA-China finals. China will get even with their earlier loss to the Dutch -- just as I hope the USA men will avenge their earlier loss to Italy as well.
