No wonder the Olympic athletes of tomorrow only demand the best accommodations.  They are being spoiled by a huge, new circular building in Lausanne-- sort of rivalling Apple's spaceship headquarters in Cupertino--which will be the Village for the Laussane 2020 YOGs.  That ain't a cheap building.

The villages are hardly "the best accommodations." They don't even have covered floors, just bare concrete. If the village is nice it's because they need it to be for the apartments to sell after the games.

Are you kidding?  Do you know how much it costs to build a circular structure vs. a plain rectangular building?

My point is that they didn't do it for the athletes. They did it for whomever will use it afterwards. During the Olympics, Pan-American Games, or whatever else the villages are basically just primitive dorm rooms. Which is why they have sometimes literally been dormitories, and in one case a prison.

The IOC deserves to be blamed for a lot of things; there's no need to go looking for unwarranted criticism.

Lausanne 2020 Mascot Unveiled
Written by Gerard Farek
09/01/19

(ATR) The first public appearance of the Lausanne 2020 mascot highlights a “one year to go” celebration in the Olympic capital.

Yodli is described by organizers as “a hybrid animal, composed of several emblematically Swiss animals that live in the Swiss mountains: a cow, a goat and of course a St. Bernard dog.

“Their different characteristics and relationships with the environment are embodied in Yodli, who signifies the diversity of the participants of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020.”

The mascot was unveiled on Tuesday night at the Malley ice rink before the Swiss Ice Hockey Championship match between Lausanne Hockey Club and Hockey Club Davos from the Grisons region. Lausanne 2020 says the game symbolized the true national dimension of the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in both of these regions, as well as the Canton of Valais and neighbouring France.

"We are delighted to be able to celebrate this symbolic date with our friends from Grisons, Valais and neighbouring France," said Ian Logan, CEO of the Organizing Committee, said in a statement. "From its base in Vaud, Lausanne 2020 transcends cantonal and even national borders. This enthusiasm will continue to grow throughout the year, and we look forward to it all.”

Yodli was designed in a collaborative effort by 140 students from Eracom, an art and communication school in Lausanne. During the process, various drafts were shown to school children from Lausanne and surrounding areas, to collect feedback and adapt the mascot. The final design was then approved by 500 young Swiss athletes aged 12 to 18.

"The empowerment of young people through the organisation and delivery of the event is a central element of Lausanne 2020," Virginie Faivre, the new President of the Organizing Committee, said. "I am delighted to continue to highlight the multitude of similar projects currently underway throughout 2019.”

The Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Organizing Committee (YOGOC) is also holding a short ceremony on Wednesday in the Flon neighborhood, in the heart of Lausanne, which will serve as the Medals Plaza during Games time. A concert by Swiss Olympic snowboarder and musician Pat Burgener will be featured before the OMEGA countdown clock begins its countdown from 365 days.

The third Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will run from January 9-20, 2020, will feature 1,800 athletes aged 15 to 18 competing in eight sports.

Lausanne 2020 to offer free access to sports events at Winter Youth Olympic Games

Lausanne 2020 will offer free access to events except the Opening Ceremony ©IOC

Access to events at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne will be free except for the Opening Ceremony, it was confirmed here today.

Lausanne 2020 are set to follow a similar model implemented by organisers of last year's Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, which was widely praised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Tickets will be put on sale for the Opening Ceremony, scheduled to be held at a new ice hockey arena being built for the Winter Youth Olympics and the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.

The Ceremony, due to take place in exactly one year's time, will be the only event where spectators are charged a fee to enter.

The exact details of the Lausanne 2020 ticketing programme have not been confirmed as the Organising Committee is still in discussions with a partner to help them implement it.

Christophe Dubi, IOC executive director for the Olympic Games, promised, however, that the policy put in place for the next edition of the Winter Youth Olympics would be "something new".

"We will develop the concept with the accessibility and will manage the access, the entire Games will be managed," Lausanne 2020 chief executive Ian Logan added.

"We will also have some contingency plans."

Buenos Aires 2018 asked interested spectators to register for "digital passes", which granted access to the entire sporting programme and ceremonies at the event.

A maximum of 600,000 were made available and they ran out during the Games amid high interest from the local population.

It did lead to snaking queues at several venues, with some spectators arriving more than two hours before competition started in order to guarantee a seat, but the IOC insisted this was a good problem to have.

Lausanne 2020 are likely to differ from the way Buenos Aires 2018 managed the ticketing policy, Logan said.

Next year's event is due to run from January 9 to 22, with 1,880 athletes from more than 80 countries expected to compete.

Lausanne 2020 Medals Unveiled
Written by Greer Wilson

2019-04-23-Medal-thumbnail.jpg?interpola

(ATR) A design from New Zealand is the winner of a worldwide competition to create the medals for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The winning design, along with the runners-up, was selected by notable panelists that included Olympian Danka Bartekova, Lausanne 2020 President Virginie Faivre, and Vivianne Morey, dean of arts and communication at Eracom in Lausanne.

The winning design, “Beauty in Diversity”, was submitted by New Zealand’s Zakea Page. The runners-up in the competition were Johan Poizat of France winning second and Mishael Jacob Pueblas of the Philippines with third.

Page's design was inspired by Maya Angelou's quote , "In diversity there is beauty." Page also added, "This is fitting because the Youth Olympic Games are not only a celebration of human excellence, but also of culture and humanity."

After the contest, the reverse side of the medal will be designed by the organizing committee.

Page will receive a trip to Lausanne to see the medals awarded during the Winter YOG.

Additionally, the winner will receive a set of medals with their design as a keepsake.

The 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games takes place from January 9 to January 22.

Lausanne 2020 competition schedule unveiled!
23.09.2019

et-voici-le-calendrier-des-competitions-

Today, the official competition schedule of the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games was released by the Organising Committee. With the first competitions kicking off in Les Diablerets, Villars and Lausanne on January 10th, 2020, the day after the Opening Ceremony in Lausanne and continuing until the Closing Ceremony on January 22nd.

The schedule is out and promises to be intense. Overall, a total of 81 competitions will be held at eight different venues over the 13 days following the Opening Ceremony. One of the main features of Lausanne 2020 will be its two-wave organisation system, an innovative solution designed to significantly increase hosting capacity by allowing each “wave” of athletes to have a shorter stay on-site. As a result, a grand total of 1880 athletes, of which a gender equal representation of 940 males and 940 females are expected to take part in the Games, allowing for exemplary diversity and a high quality of competitions.

The first wave of competitions will kick-off with alpine skiing in Les Diablerets, biathlon in Les Tuffes and ski mountaineering, which will be making its debut in the Olympic Games, in Villars. Lausanne will be the host of figure skating and mixed NOC 3-on-3 ice hockey, a new competition format proposed and developed by the International Ice Hockey Federation and Lausanne 2020. This first wave of competitions will also be marked by four days of speed skating on the frozen lake of St-Moritz.

January 16th will ring the transition to the second wave of competitions and young athletes. St-Moritz’s historic natural Olympia Bob Run will host its first luge, bobsleigh and skeleton Olympic competitions since 1948. The French station of Les Tuffes will welcome ski jumping and Nordic combined, while its Swiss neighbour, Vallée de Joux, will host cross-country skiing. Freestyle skiing and snowboard will take place in Villars and Leysin. As for Lausanne, it will stage five days of 6-team tournaments in ice hockey and the short track speed skating competitions.

Curling will run across the whole Games Time, taking place in Champéry from January 10thto 22nd.

The Games will come to an end with the Closing Ceremony to be held at the Medals Plaza, in Lausanne, on January 22nd.

All competitions will be free. Indoor competitions will also be free but will require prior registration. In line with its commitment to sustainability, Lausanne 2020 encourages all visitors to opt for public transport to access the venues.

Take a look at the detailed competition schedule.

[Spoilers] As we draw near to the Opening Ceremony, I thought I'd share one last batch of photos/screenshots from the rehearsal yesterday. This batch contains artistic performances and a possible Cauldron? (Still unsure as it could be apart of an artistic performance). These are spoilers nonetheless.

So I guess that didnt go as planned...is it still happening in switzerland? Heard they are on lockdown....

It already happened in Switzerland.  The event was in January of 2020, so it was before the pandemic and the lockdowns.  Fortunate timing for them since it meant they were unaffected by COVID.
