I.O.C. did really shoot themselves on the foot by making tokyo govenment comply with their ridiculous requirements in the middle of a pandemic. At this point only dictatorships craving for massive international propaganda media, or wealthy countries whit no problem on covering this kind of expenses (which by the way are getting less interested in the games everyday) will have any interest on organizing this event. I feel bad for Bach having to try and sort this mess. I wouldn't blame him if he resigns suddenly after the Games due to the mess that was Tokyo 2020. Honestly, they should've cancelled it instead of delaying it, but they'll regret ever giving Japan the Games now it seems. They won't. Zero chance that'll happen and it's ludicrous to think for a split second they would even consider it. The IOC is in this for the TV and sponsorship money. They still get paid. It's Japan holding the bag right now and once the games are over, all sympathy in this situation will go to them. And we know the IOC well enough to be pretty certain that if there's any negativity pointed at the Olympics, they'll brush it off and point the finger at Japan. But only AFTER they have delivered

He's the head of a corrupt organization that he told the world he would help reform, but that hasn't really happened. Yes, this is all largely out of his control, but it shines a light on the idea that the onus for an Olympics shouldn't be entirely on the host city/country. And they'll likely pay for that down the road if they have trouble attracting future hosts (which is probably why they're about to give 2032 to Brisbane without a fight)
Nacre
Unfortunately I think Quaker is right, and a fight will begin to shift blame between Japan and the IOC. If I were the PM or Emperor of Japan, there's no way I would agree to attend the ceremonies and open the games, for example.

For the world as a whole, having a massive event which keeps people in their homes watching TV for a fortnight is probably a good thing. For the Organising Committee, and for all the firms which have been gearing up to sell merchandise, overpriced food etc. at venues, the ban on live audiences is a staggeringly bad thing. iceman530
no fans, it was always coming to this. And the virus situation in Japan is continuing to get worse and worse instead of better and better. frankly, a no fans olympics was probably the best case scenario

I was gonna say, if Sapporo drops out, it'll be up to either Vancouver or the triple bid from Barcelona and the French-Andorran Pyrenees to fight for the right to host. People will legitimately physically be hurt if Japan continues with the 2030 winter olympics bid. I am sure of it. Even the normally refrained Japanese will be full-on MILITANT if any such effort is made. I think we can safely cross off Sapporo or any olympic bid from japan for the next fifty years. To think otherwise has no gauge on the pulse of the country whatsoever.
Hansfromdenmark
I am the only one who thinks that Tokyo could get a new olympics soon to compensate for this one, and still use there venues. 2032 to Tokyo if not Brisbane allready was so far. But I actually think it would have been a good idea to do that. But it seems like i am the only one who thinks like that. I cant see anyone can blame Japan for the pandemic. So I think they should be given a new chance for the public and to make a great games.

Japan is going to be on display to the entire world for 3 plus weeks. They don't want to make it seem like they're anti-Olympics or anti-IOC at this point or else that's going to be a major turn off for everyone. They'll put on a brave face for this. It's the fallout afterwards they'll want to deal with. And by that point, the IOC will be so desperate to put out fires related to China, they'll forget all about Japan very quickly

But nothing in the foreseeable future, that's for sure. A lot of the venues and infrastructure for these Olympics won't fit into the plans for a future Olympics, most notably the athletes' village. That's why a 2nd postponement was never an option because it would have been too difficult and expensive to reset for a 2nd time.

Plus the fact that it would bump even closer or past the 2022 Winter Olympics, whatever YOGs the IOC had planned; the different continental Games, the FIFA WOrld Cup, etc.

They're there, propped up for ceremonial events such as this. So his appearance will be some sort of salve I guess, for this semi-suicidal event. I don't see how they are going to stop protests and negative reactions from the open road races in Sapporo.

So many sports federations changed their plans to accommodate the Olympics. FINA and World Athletics now have World Championships next year. Another Olympic postponement means they would lose an event entirely off the calendar.
