10th Meeting of the Mascot Selection Panel

30 May 2018Tokyo 2020 Games
The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held the tenth meeting of its Mascot Selection Panel on Monday, 28 May.

Following on from the previous meeting, the panel members continued their discussions on proposed names for the Tokyo 2020 Games mascots. It was decided that a vote would be taken on the shortlisted names for the Olympic and Paralympic Games mascots, and that the most popular names would be selected on condition that they pass domestic and international trademark verification procedures. The names of the mascots will be revealed during the official Tokyo 2020 Games mascots debut event scheduled for late July.

At a press interview following the meeting, panel member Teruhisa Kitahara retraced the steps that led to the selection of the Games mascots, and commented, “The mascots will be making their official debuts soon, and will be featured on a range of licensed goods, which will make them even more widely-known and popular. The members of the panel very much hope that people take the mascots into their hearts and that they are loved by young and old alike.”

The Tokyo 2020 Games mascots will be making their debuts in July. We hope that you too are looking forward to meeting the first ever Olympic and Paralympic mascots to be selected by elementary schoolchildren!

about the names

Quote

The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said Sunday that Miraitowa, the name given to the blue and white mascot, is a combination of the Japanese words “mirai,” meaning future, and “towa,” eternity. The committee said it named the mascot Miraitowa in the hope that a wonderful future would continue for all eternity.

The name of the pink and white Someity mascot comes from a combination of “some” from the someiyoshino cherry blossom variety and the English word mighty — when read aloud it sounds similar to the English words “so mighty.” The name expresses the “Japanese fondness for cherry blossoms and the strength of athletes,” the committee said

Unsurprisingly, the presentation felt a lot like I was watching the lovechild of Digimon and Astroboy. And in a good way. Too bad it was in 3D but I guess that makes the videos more cheaper to make. Also I appreciate they included the schoolchildren, since it was their choice after all (though the first seconds might be sour grapes for those who supported candidates B and/or C)

Good luck to Miraitowa and Someity. Soohorang and Bandabi left big shoes to fill but I hope they get as popular on the next two years.
