gotosy
Quote Tokyo 2020 begin to draw up plans to select mascot A commission to pick a mascot for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo has met for the first time today, with the panel focused on engaging the public in the process. The Commission is being chaired by Ryohei Miyata, Japan's Commissioner for Cultural Affairs. Organisers claim the panel also includes experts on mascot character development. Eligibility criteria for entering the mascot competition will be established by the Commission, as well as the detailed schedule of the selection process. They will also be tasked with coming up with ways in which to choose from the entries before deciding on the identity of the mascot. Tokyo 2020 have revealed upcoming meetings of the Commission will focus on the application process and engagement with the public. "We are really excited to launch this project with such experts," said Toshirō Mutō, the Tokyo 2020 chief executive. "I am confident the commission will come up with the most engaging, creative and transparent ways of selecting mascots for the 2020 Games. "Mascots are ambassadors of the Games to the world. "I hope the Tokyo 2020 Games mascots will inspire and be loved by everyone around the world, especially by children." Tokyo 2020 have promised that the Commission will aim to submit the application and selection processes to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) by March. Organisers established the Commission last month as they aimed to avoid the controversy surrounding their logo in 2015. The logo was the subject of controversy, as the initial design by Kenjiro Sano had to be scrapped due to allegations of plagiarism after Belgian Olivier Debie claimed that it resembled his Théâtre de Liège logo too closely. The process of choosing a replacement was also criticised. Nearly 15,000 entries were received in the open contest to pick the new emblem, with the Commission again being led by Miyata. It was in contrast to first time around when only those who had won a specific design award were allowed to take part. Allowing the public to get involved was seen as a way of spreading the Olympics across Japan but others argued that this would impact negatively on the quality of the eventually selected designs. In December 2015, the American Institute of Graphic Arts urged Tokyo 2020 to scrap the open contest and said that a "remarkable" design could only be the result of a professional designer working directly with their client. The eventual winner, designed by Asao Tokolo, a graduate of Tokyo Zokei University with a degree in architecture, received a mixed response when it was unveiled in April. http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1045908/tokyo-2020-begin-to-draw-up-plans-to-select-mascot
baron-pierreIV
New film that can supply ideas for a Tokyo 2020 mascot. Design-wise, it's a very weird, BLADE RUNNER-type film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219827/videoplayer/vi3689723417?ref_=tt_ov_vi
Shadowriver
Ghost in the Shell is known anime series... but it don't think they would use it as inspiration ^^' I would look more on anime targeted for kids. Japanese in terms of character art designs are in top of the world, they got more supply of mascots then it's needed ;p so i would not be worried about it too much.... but there is slight degree of possibility they do something weird knowing them
Ikarus360
They will probably go with something cutesy which would sell well with kids. Youkai Watch is one of the most popular things at Japan right now. They could also try doing an approach similar to some beloved character like Totoro Or maybe something like those typical Magical Girl mascots you see these days

Well, some of them. Those two on the bottom right is Mepple and Mipple from Pretty Cure (first season and Max Heart), the cat is Hummy from Suite Pretty Cure (she's voiced by Sailor Moon's Japanese VA too), Artemis and Luna from Sailor Moon, Kyubey from Madoka Magica, the mouse is Blanca from Sugar Sugar Rune (which has a really catchy opening song) and I'm sure the one on the top left is Kero from Cardcaptor Sakura. Yup, I'm an otaku. Get used to it.
Ikarus360
Don't have a problem with it. You're talking with an Otaku here as well (I also recognized may of those mascots from Precure, the newest season which began just yesterday, btw). While i would love Ghibli being picked up i'm afraid they're kind of on the activist side so they might not do it. I wish Tezuka was still alive so he would help up (since he made many sport mascots while he was still alive like the 1985 Universiade and at least a couple of baseball/football teams out there). Japan is also known for having some neat sport mascots for some of their teams.

The eyecatch is so cute and so is Cure Whip's transformation! (her transformation music is also really good, Hayashi Yuki did a great job composing) The eyecatch in fact was animated by one of the animators on Dragon Ball Super, Koudai Watanabe

I think they did that to draw in older viewers/fans. Fresh kinda did that when it was aired as it had older-looking Cures. It's kinda like a pattern in the later seasons until now. Suite and HappinessCharge had older looking Cures and the rest had younger looking ones due to their different art styles. Heartcatch's designs actually made the Cures look a lot younger than previous and later seasons.
gotosy
Official 2020 Tokyo Olympic mascot to be decided in summer 2018 TOKYO — The official mascot of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be unveiled in the summer of 2018 with the public design competition opened to everyone in Japan regardless of occupation or experience, the Games organizing committee said Monday. Anyone under 18 can still enter the competition as long as they are accompanied by a guardian, organizers said following the third meeting of a deliberation panel for the mascot. “I’ve competed at the Olympics four times, but the mascot at an Olympics is unique—each and every one of them,” said retired tennis player Ai Sugiyama, one of 14 on the selection panel. “Some you remember very well, and some you can’t remember at all.” “The official emblem has a very Japanese feel to it. I hope the mascot will be embraced by the entire country. I’m excited about what it will look like in the end.” Whether foreigners can enter the competition or not will be decided at the next meeting on Feb 23, said Yoshiko Ikuma, the panel’s vice chair. All designs must be drafted from six different angles, along with various expressions and poses as well as a narrative of the mascot. Ikuma said the panel has yet to decide how to choose a name for the mascot. A selection panel including design experts will review all entries through a series of steps that still need to be finalized before the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee give it the final nod. © KYODO https://www.japantoday.com/category/sports/view/official-2020-tokyo-olympic-mascot-to-be-decided-in-summer-2018
Palette86
Quote 2020 organizers unlikely to take public input on mascot name The 2020 Tokyo Olympic organizing committee said Monday the name of the games' official mascot will not be taken from the general public but from creative professionals. Once a panel selects the design of the mascot through a public competition, organizers will open the process up to those with knowledge and experience in not just copywriting but also in dealing with trademarks. The naming competition will be open to Japanese citizens and foreigners residing in Japan. The winner of the design competition is expected to be involved in the selection of the name in some capacity. Monday's meeting of the panel to decide the mascot selection process was the sixth of its kind and initially scheduled to be the last. But the panel has decided it will continue to meet to finalize details of the process, which must be submitted to the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee by the end of March. "We discussed the possibility of asking the public about the name of the mascot. But as you know, it's a much tougher task (than the design) when it involves trademark rights," said the panel's vice chair, Yoshiko Ikoma. "We'll concentrate on the naming once the design is decided. We've yet to discuss how to choose the people who will decide the name, but we have to overcome the trademark issue both in Japan and abroad." "We need more than a name that sounds cute. It's not so simple." The panel had agreed in its previous meeting late February to incorporate opinions of children, from preschool to high school, regarding the design. The design competition is open to everyone in Japan regardless of occupation or experience. Those under 18 can enter as long as they have a guardian's approval. All designs, which will be reviewed by a yet-to-be set up design selection panel, must be drafted from six different angles with various expressions and poses as well as a narrative. The IOC and IPC will give the final nod ahead of the mascot's planned unveiling in the summer of 2018. gotosy
Elementary students may choose mascot for 2020 Tokyo Games: organizing committee April 26, 2017 (Mainichi Japan) The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced on April 25 that the nation's elementary school children will likely choose the Game's mascot from the final candidates via voting. The committee is expected to give each elementary class across Japan one vote on the final mascot candidates and will, as a rule, choose the one the children select the most. "Seeking the opinions of the children will help boost the excitement for the Games," says organizing committee Vice Director General Masaaki Komiya. "I want to also use it as a chance to teach the children about leaving a legacy." The committee is consulting the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry and other related parties to decide the application requirements and screening method by mid-May, and a committee review panel will narrow the candidates for the mascot down to three or four by the end of the year. The vote will then be held at the beginning of 2018 with the intention of deciding the design of the mascot by the first half of the year. According to the education ministry's School Basic Survey, in academic year 2016, there were 20,313 public and private elementary schools nationwide, making up a total of 271,764 classes. The organizing committee says it will be the first effort of its kind in the history of the Games. https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20170426/p2a/00m/0na/003000c
gotosy
Quote Tokyo 2020 Mascot Design Competition will be Open to the General Public and Elementary Schoolchildren will Select the Winners! 22 May 2017 The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) has today announced its plan to have the Games' official mascots decided by means of a national competition. Members of the public in Japan will be invited to submit mascot design proposals, following which a shortlist of designs will be reviewed and voted on by elementary schoolchildren across the country. Did you know that mascots are a very popular element of modern Japanese culture? They are usually created to promote a particular region, event or business, and are often used by local governments or other organisations to stimulate tourism and economic development, or by companies to promote their corporate identity. The mascots selected for each Olympics and Paralympics have become a much-loved feature of the Games too. They add to the excitement surrounding the Games, they communicate the values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements and they reflect the culture of the host country All residents of Japan will be invited to submit their personal mascot designs through Japanese- and English-language websites. A “creative brief” with a comprehensive set of design guidelines and criteria is being made available for applicants, who will need to submit designs for both Olympic and Paralympic mascots. A Tokyo 2020 mascot review panel will select a shortlist from the submitted design sets, and this will be reviewed and voted on by elementary school classes nationwide. Tokyo 2020 will select the design set which attracts the largest number of classroom votes. Said Yoshiko Ikoma, Vice Chairperson of the Mascot Selection Process Panel, “Given the importance of mascots in modern Japanese culture, we always knew there would be huge public interest in the selection of the Tokyo 2020 mascot. We think this process gives the public – and especially schoolchildren – a unique opportunity to participate in the design and selection process.” The timeline for the design and selection process will be as follows: August 1 to 14, 2017 – design submission period (submission via a special website) December 2017 – mascot panel selects shortlist of design sets December 2017 to January 2018 – elementary school children vote on the shortlist March 2018 – design set with the largest number of votes is announced as the winner July to August 2018 – mascot panel decides names for the winning mascots https://tokyo2020.jp/en/news/notice/20170522-01.html

Acceptance of the Internet-only applications began at noon on Tuesday. About 200 people, most of them children, gathered at an elementary school in Tokyo for a commemorative event. They were joined by former pro tennis player Ai Sugiyama and Paralympic shooter Aki Taguchi. The athletes spoke of how mascots are important to the Games. gotosy
Tokyo Olympic organizers say 2,042 mascot designs received The organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games said Tuesday that they have received 2,042 entries of designs for mascots. The deadline for submissions of designs from the public was noon Monday. The total number of entries received was 2,042 - 1,774 individual applications and 268 group entries. About 25% came from people in their teens or 20s, while around 50% were from people aged 30 to 49. The oldest applicants were in their 80s, organizers said. Following the completion of the mascot competition design phase, Tokyo 2020 mascot selection panel chairperson Ryohei Miyata commented: “I feel the weight of expectation from all those who submitted entries. I look forward to the day when we can meet the mascots of the Tokyo 2020 Games, which we believe will help raise everyone's spirits. I will make sure that we judge fairly and reflect the enthusiasm of the entrants.” A mascot review panel will select a shortlist from the submitted design sets by the beginning of December, and schoolchildren at every elementary school across the country, including international schools, will be given the opportunity to cast their vote and select their preferred set of designs. Organizers will select the design set which attracts the largest number of classroom votes and announce the winner in February 2018. https://japantoday.com/category/sports/tokyo-olympic-organizers-say-2-042-mascot-designs-received
