The MCG (Melbourne Stadium)

Recommended Posts

This clip is making the rounds on American sports sites today. Gamesbids often discusses stadium legacies.... looks like the Melbourne stadium is being kept up and well used.

Note - We don't know much about Australian Rules Football in the US. The main thing we know is that the refs dress like Colonel Sanders and make funny gestures when somebody scores. But not any more apparently...when did that change? And why!?! That was the best part.

Constant upgrading helps.

The Great Southern Stand was approved as part of the Melbourne 1996 Olympic bid. The Members, Ponsford and Olympic stands were upgraded for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. There is now a lot of talk of doing more work to the Great Southern Stand to bring it up to the level of the other stands.

Technically the Northern Stand built for the 2006 Commonwealth Games is one whole stand, but it still retains it's Members' Ponsford and Olympic Stand monikers. In addition to this, the Olympic Stand houses the National Sports Museum.

The Great Southern Stand was built as part of the 1992 Cricket World Cup and the other stands would have gone minor upgrades (individual seating etc) prior to the 1996 Olympics, had Melbourne hosted it.

However the federal funding for the MCG upgrade was tagged as a "non Games" dependent Bicentennial grant. I have the documents around here somewhere.
