Turkey is turning into an Islamist backwater....very sad....

Two Turkish journalists have been sentenced to two years in prison for republishing a cover of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo with a cartoon of Muhammad, amid rising concerns about freedom of expression in Turkey.

The court in Istanbul convicted Cumhuriyet newspaper columnists Ceyda Karan and Hikmet Cetinkaya of inciting "hatred and enmity." The pair were however acquitted of the separate charges of "insulting religious values."

The journalists' lawyers immediately appealed the verdict.

The pair went on trial in July 2015 after featuring the cover image of Charlie Hebdo's survivors' edition – which featured an image of a weeping Muhammad – in their columns for the secular, opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper in an act of support for freedom of expression.

The verdict was met with cries of "Allahu Akbar" in court, according to Cumhuriyet reports.

When the edition was published Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu condemned the publication of cartoons of the Muslim prophet as an "open provocation".

Well, that's what they get for electing Erdogan (Again). Then again it's not news anymore Turkey has secret deals with ISIS.

The IOC really dodged a bullet back in 2013 when they picked Tokyo instead.

What is happening in the world today reminds me of a conversation I once had in university about Brutalist architecture. The designers (artists, architects, etc) of the 1960's thought that they could throw out everything from before their time. All of the concepts and principles that were learned over thousands of years were to be discarded in favor of the radicalism of the day.

You can argue that communism was the same. There is almost no actual economic theory in the writings of Karl Marx. (In fairness he did come up with a new theory of value.) There was no attempt to build a functioning economic system out of communism; the early communists were only interested in destroying the system that preceded their own.

IMO the old world is caught between two competing forms of radicalism: the utopianism of the western world and reactionary impulses that wants to pull us all back into the medieval world. I don't think it's a coincidence that fundamentalism and nationalism are increasing at the same time as the Euro crisis, a possible UK withdrawal from the EU, threats at independence for Scotland, Catalonia, etc, trouble with Russia, and so on.

Fix the economy, enforce a reasonable middle ground on immigration, and give single men a productive role in a post-patriarchal world and I think most of these problems will go away on their own.

Turkey jails Cumhuriyet journalists Can Dundar and Erdem Gul
A Turkish court has jailed two prominent journalists for revealing state secrets, in a case widely criticised by international observers.
Erdem Gul received five years and Can Dundar five years and 10 months.
Mr Dundar and Mr Gul, editor and Ankara bureau chief of opposition daily Cumhuriyet, had reported that Turkey had tried to ship arms to rebels fighting the Syrian government.
Shortly before the verdict, a gunman attempted to kill Mr Dundar.
The assailant fired several shots while Mr Dundar was briefing reporters outside the courthouse. Mr Dundar escaped unharmed and the gunman was arrested. A reporter was lightly injured in the leg.
Speaking after the verdict, Mr Dundar said the sentence, and the assassination attempt, were "not given only to suppress and silence us" but to "intimidate the Turkish media and make us scared of writing".
Mr Dundar and Mr Gul were charged in November with espionage after their reports in May 2015 alleging that Turkey's intelligence services were sending weapons and ammunition to Islamist rebels fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkish security forces intercepted a convoy of lorries near the Syrian border in January 2014, and Cumhuriyet alleged these vehicles were linked to Turkey's MIT intelligence organisation.
Alongside the newspaper report was video footage showing police discovering crates of weapons hidden beneath boxes of medicine.
The Turkish government insisted that the lorries were not carrying weapons to the Islamist rebels as alleged, but bringing aid to Syria's Turkmen minority, a Turkic-speaking ethnic group.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the video footage was a state secret, and by publishing it Cumhuriyet daily had engaged in an act of espionage.
"Whoever wrote this story will pay a heavy price for this. I will not let him go unpunished," he vowed live on television.
Referring to Mr Erdogan, Mr Dundar said: "Today, we know that the reason for the threats we have been receiving for weeks and the bullets fired from that gun today are due to the fact that we have been shown as targets by the highest office in the state."
The journalists have become a symbol of the erosion of press freedom in Turkey, says the BBC's Mark Lowen in Istanbul.
Media freedom has plummeted in Turkey, which now ranks 151st of 180 countries in an index by the watchdog Reporters without Borders.

Erdogan certainly is turning into a dictator isn't he with his pro-Islamist guise since he got elected. What will Ataturk say about him (Not very highly, IMO)? Doesn't need his huge presidential palace in Ankara.

And I supported Istanbul's several Olympic hosting bids!
