KRATK Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Today, the President Michelle Bachelet announced that Santiago will bid for the XXV Winter Olympics, to be helded in 2026. Santiago was previously defeated by the city of Christchurch, New Zealand in a battle for being the first WOG to be realized in the Southern Hemisphere. Surprisingly, Santiago in his first bid reached to the finals beating Sofia (bidder for the 1992, 1994 and 2014 Winter Olympics), Dubai and Munich (host of the 1972 Olympic Games). When Bachelet announced that Santiago will participate in the new bidding process, she said that "We learned a lot in the bid for 2018 and we had corrected and improved this new bid". The bid has the base of the last process: the Olympic Stadium is now in construction. But, new venues will be added as ArenaSantiago for hockey and the new Press Center in the Costanera Center, the tallest building in South America in construction. The ski centers for the mountain sports will be Portillo, Valle Nevado, La Parva, El Colorado and Farellones, with Termas de Chillán in Southern Chile as an emergency backup venue in case of lack of snow. Also, the leaders of SANOC presented the new logo for the bid, based in two of the rings of the Olympic symbol with the representative colours of the city (dark blue and orange), resembling an S (for Santiago) and a flame.
