2016 Political Crisis in Brazil

Recommended Posts

It looks quite difficult to obtain the remaining 44 votes, though, since it's very posisble they will try to buy conscience/votes on the next days before weekend from the deputies. Let's hope people do the right thing.

PMDB is currently estimating around 380 in favor of the impeachment.

After Los Angeles Times, another very good article about the pathetic coup in Brazil by The New York Times:

The New York Times (Yesterday)

"Ms. Rousseff and her top aides argue that the impeachment proceedings amount to a coup. Unable to seek her removal on corruption charges, her opponents are trying to impeach her on a claim of budgetary manipulation involving the use of funds from state banks to cover budget gaps. (Ms. Rousseff is rare among major political figures in Brazil in that she has not faced accusations of illicit personal enrichment.)"

International media recognize: Yes , this is a coup attempt in Brazil.

After Glenn Greenwald (The Intercept‎), Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, another article: by The Guardian (april 11):

Attempts to oust President Dilma Rousseff are undemocratic

We are extremely concerned about the sustained efforts by sections of Brazil’s rightwing opposition to destabilise – and ultimately overthrow – its constitutional and elected government, including through attempting to impeach President Dilma Rousseff. This campaign has involved demonstrations for “regime change” through the ousting of the president before the end of her term. These have even included overt calls for the military to carry out a coup d’état.

There is also a crude campaign aimed at discrediting former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, whom Dilma is seeking to appoint as a minister in her government. The aim here seems to be not only to oust Dilma but also legally bar Lula as a potential presidential candidate in 2018.

What is happening in Brazil?

In Brazil, events against the coup are already more frequent than "the color revolution" against president Rousseff.

Yesterday: People in the streets against Globo TV, against
the idiotization

of Brazilian society and the media manipulation

Understanding:
Main Brazilian newspapers (O Globo, Estadão, Folha de S. Paulo) supported the military coup in 64
and main Brazilian newspapers (and Globo TV) support the right-wing coup against president Rousseff today and
the horrible public criminalization of former president Lula.
Lula remains strong and is leading all polls for president in 2018.

The Guardian text is not an article, it is an open letter from a group of leftist popular movements and professors from the US and Europe.

Meanwhile (already old news actually lol):

Brazil: insider claims Rousseff coalition took funds from Belo Monte mega-dam
Indigenous communities and the Amazon rain forest have joined the growing list of potential victims of Brazil’s huge corruption scandal, according to a senior construction executive who testified that the Belo Monte dam was used to generate 150m reais ($41.4m) in donations to the ruling coalition.
In a plea bargain that adds to the pressure on Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, Otávio Marques de Azevedo, the former president of the construction company Andrade Gutierrez, also told investigators that dozens of other projects were used to generate funds for political parties.
The greatest attention, however, is on the controversial hydropower plant that was pushed through by President Rousseff despite years of protests by environmentalists and human rights campaigners who say the dam on the Xingu river would destroy indigenous peoples’ livelihoods and harm one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
It is now claimed that as well as being Brazil’s biggest engineering project, the 26m reais dam has also been one of the main sources of funding for government parties.

In the day of the voting of the coup my order is to advance towards the Nationcal Congress, Chamber of Deputies and Senate, shooting to kill.

Bring ropes too. We'll invade the Chamber and the Senate and my order is to hand all the putschist Deputies and Senators. Let's annihilate them all.

This is the wall the Government of Brasilia - Federal District - is building to separate protesters during the Lower Chamber's session next Sunday, when Congressmen will vote the impeachment of Mme. Rousseff. This is the way they want the world to see Brazil as a divided nation. That's not true. Whatever the result of the votes, life will remain the same on Monday. It is a shame. Hopefully, the last one.

11 votes. This is what the oppositon needs to approve the process of impeachment. Let's be honest: how could 2/3 of the deputies of the lower house be plotting a conspiracy, a coup? Does it make any sense? Conspiracy and coup are ploted on the sly, not in front of the whole nation.

More International news about the right-wing coup in Brazil.
Attempted coup in Brazil seeks to reverse election results
By Mark Weisbrot, contributor
If you are Following the news of political turmoil in Brazil, it may be Difficult to get a grasp of what is really going on. This happens Often When there is an attempted coup in the Western Hemisphere, and Especially When the U.S. government has an interest in the outcome. Usually the information about that interest, and Often Washington's role, is the first casualty of the conflict. (Twenty-first century examples include Paraguay in 2012, Haiti in 2011 and 2004, Honduras in 2009 Ecuadorin 2010 and Venezuela in 2002.)
First, there is no doubt que this is a coup in progress. It is an attempt by Brazil's traditional elite - Which includes the one of the most important players, most of the major medium - to reverse the outcome of Brazil's 2014 presidential elections. Exhibit A is the grounds on Which They hope to impeach President Dilma Rousseff of the Workers' Party (PT by its Portuguese initials). It has nothing to with the corruption or any serious offense. The charge is the que government used borrowed money in 2014 to maintain the appearance que the primary budget surplus target was Within its. But this is something que other presidents had done, and is hardly an serious offense. A comparison: When the Republicans in the U.S. Congress Threatened to shut down the government over the debt ceiling in 2013, the Obama administration used the number of accounting tricks to extend the deadline, and there was little controversy over this.
The charges against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are also dubious, even if they turn out to be true. Most importantly, the accusers have not shown any connection to the big "Lava Jato" (car wash) corruption scandal — or any other corruption. Lula — as the former president is known — is accused of owning some beachfront property, which he denies owning, that was renovated by a Brazilian construction company; and of receiving money from various corporations for speeches. Most importantly, however, these are things that took place after he left the presidency. Although Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) has rightly made an issue of rival presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's (D) receipt of millions of dollars from corporations for speeches, it is not illegal in the U.S. — or Brazil.

Brazilian President labels Vice President coup plotter
Dilma Rousseff is in a desperate battle to save her presidency before an impeachment vote in Congress this weekend.
12 Apr 2016 19:14 GMT
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has branded her vice president a traitor and said he was a conspirator in a "coup" using impeachment proceedings to bring down a popularly elected government. "If there were any doubts about my denunciation that a coup is under way, there can't be now. The coup plotters have a leader and a deputy leader," she said in a blistering attack in the capital Brasilia on Tuesday.
Referring to the leak on Monday of a recording in which her vice president, Michel Temer, practises the speech he would make if Rousseff were impeached, the president said: "The mask of the conspirators has fallen." "We are living in strange and worrying times, times of a coup and pretending and treachery," she said. "Yesterday they used the pretence of a leak to give the order for the conspiracy."
In a ruthless and complex contest, supporters and opponents of Brazil's first female president raced to amass the votes that will either send her to trial in the Senate or torpedo the procedure.

Btw, Lula's list is being heavily accused of fraud since it has many politicians that are openly in favor of the Impeachment. Even members of the biggest e most tradiotional opposition parties are on that list lol

Maduro here is pretty much yanking his hair out of despair. Brazil was the last ally (at least the most relevant one because no one gives a damn about Bolivia or Ecuador) he had and he has been more annoying than ever with "muh coup" story. They can't grasp the reality that Latin America got tired of leftism.

I'm sorry for both Dilma/Lula supporters, but she has to go. The majority of brazilian people are against her and just want her out. If she stays in power then the country will be pretty much ungovernable and i'm sure no one wants that at this point. I'm pretty sure the IOC is also crossing their fingers because the last thing they want, specially with all the hate the Olympics are getting lately (thanks, Sochi) is a major embarssment with the political crisis impacting the games.

Welcome to Brazil, Baby.

Why this is the most absurd situation in the democratic history of Brazil?

Why people against the coup say: "people against the president Rousseff and the Worker's Party are ignorant or fascists"?

Why this is a "Dangerous Subversion of Democracy", for
Glenn Greenwald (American lawyer, journalist, speaker and author, best known for his role in a series of reports in The Guardian newspaper on the classified information made public by whistleblower Edward Snowden , the series Which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service)?

The answer:

fascism+in+brazil.pngimgupload

Who is Eduardo Cunha? Who is Bolsonaro?

1. Cunha is best known as "the most corrupt man in Brazil" (he is president of the Chamber of Deputies)

2. Bolsonaro is best know as "one of the most misogynistic, hateful elected official in the democratic world".

And?

They are some of the most influential politicians against President Rousseff and the Worker's Party.
They are important people of the "impeachment" against Dilma Rousseff.
This is crazy? No. This is Brazil .

Corrupt politicians against 'corruption'? This is How Social Chaos Begins.
Brazil (really against corruption, not against 'corruption of a party') will not accept the actions taken by the pro-impeachment without a fight.

All this does not exclude the fact that she IS corrupt. So she have to go.

This is a lie. The "Pedaladas Fiscais" are not corruption. This is a common political action in Brazil for many politicians. You know it.

And after Glenn Greenwald (The Intercept‎), Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Guardian and The Independent: FORBES:

FORBES
Why Impeaching Brazil's President Dilma Is A Bad Idea

Fed up with corruption and crony capitalism, Brazilians have taken to the streets in protest for the past year and a half. Two weekends ago they were at it again. This time calling for president Dilma Rousseff’shead. According to a poll by MDA Pesquisa, 59.7% think she should be impeached.

Let’s face it: the current corruption scandal surrounding state owned oil company Petrobras is a political and economic disaster. Once the flagship enterprise of all that was good and bright about Brazil is now Brazil’s Enron. Petrobras stocks have eroded more than 80% in the last five years, hurting public pensions of countless Brazilians. The economy will likely go into recession mode soon.

But worse than all of this is yet another banana republic-esque scheme of using state assets — in this case Petrobras — to serve political interests. What did Dilma know about skimming skimming Petrobras profits for the campaigns of Workers’ Party politicians? She probably knew something. She was once Energy Minister of predecessor president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. She’s always been a top official within the party. Still, unless a court proves Dilma was complicit in the Petrobras corruption scandal, then impeaching her is a bad idea.

Actually, let me go out on a limb here: it is a terrible idea and here’s why.

First, if Dilma goes, her vice president Michel Temer takes over the country. Temer is a constitutional lawyer from São Paulo and president of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, or PMDB. PMDB is one of the largest parties in Brazil, but is not known for their leadership skills. Their strength comes from their sheer size, but not much else.

Moreover, there were six PMDB politicians on the recent Supreme Court list of 54 legislators being investigated for their involvement in the Petrobras scheme. Of those six, one was PMDB Senate President Renan Calheiros and the other was Lower House President Eduardo Cunha, also PMDB.

PS. My friends here are reactionary against left-wing (not against "corruption").
