The world will bow down to Geno Auriemma's players now with, including but not limited to, essentially just over a quarter of the 12-women Team USA roster coming from Connecticut (does not include Elena Delle Donne, who did sign with UCONN and took a summer class for a day but got homesick for Delaware and never played) for their 6th consecutive Olympic gold. Catchings is there too for Vols fans. Yes, rio2016man, Stewie made the roster to provide the length, speed, defense, and height with Delle Donne's (and her crazy efficiency) and Griner's. She's already played at the World Championships in Turkey under him with that international experience under her belt. She can more hold her own. Imagine a Triple Towers contingent. Following the drawing of the groups by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in March, Rio 2016 has now confirmed the days and times for each encounter. In the men’s tournament, the final three teams will be decided at the Olympic qualifying tournaments that will be held between 4 and 10 July in Italy, Serbia and the Philippines. Two of these teams will go into group A with reigning Olympic and world champions the USA plus Australia, China and Venezuela. The other qualifier will join Spain, who took silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, plus Argentina, Brazil, Lithuania and Nigeria in group B. In the women’s tournament, the last five places will be decided Olympic qualifying tournament on 13-19 June in Nantes, France. Three of these teams will be added to group A along with Japan, Brazil and Australia, while the other two will join reigning Olympic and world champions the USA, Canada, Senegal and Serbia in group B. gotosy Posted June 6, 2016 Author Report Share Posted June 6, 2016 Stephen Curry won't be on US Olympic basketball team in Rio Stephen Curry has withdrawn from consideration from the Olympics, leaving the U.S. basketball team without the NBA's MVP. Curry said Monday in a statement that he has decided to pull out for "several factors - including recent ankle and knee injuries." He is the highest-profile absence for the two-time defending gold medalists, who will already be without NBA All-Stars Chris Paul and Anthony Davis. Curry has won a pair of world titles with the Americans and was a starter when they won the 2014 Basketball World Cup. He had spoken of wanting the chance to win Olympic gold, but missed six games in the postseason with a right knee injury. "My previous experiences with USA Basketball have been incredibly rewarding, educational and enjoyable, which made this an extremely difficult decision for me and my family. However, due to several factors - including recent ankle and knee injuries - I believe this is the best decision for me at this stage of my career." Curry said he had spoken with his family and recently informed USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo that he would not go to Brazil. "Obviously we are disappointed that Steph will not be available this summer, but we understand these situations arise and we are fully supportive of his decision," Colangelo said. His decision to withdraw was first reported by the Mercury News. The Americans have a list of 31 players in their roster pool for this summer and plan to name their 12-man roster later this month. Curry, the first player to be voted a unanimous MVP and the league's leading scorer, certainly would have been on it. He started all nine games for the Americans in Spain, averaging 10.7 points, and his USA Basketball experience dates to when he played for the under-19 team in 2007 that won a silver medal. As much as I'd love to see Lebron play, this is the sixth straight year he's gone all the way through the finals. He needs a break, even if he doesn't think he wants one. Excused? These aren't kids in a classroom sitting there until an authority figure tells them they can leave. LeBron is a big boy, not some little kid who needs to be told when to take a nap. He can decide when he needs a break. Or maybe the Cavs who sign his paychecks can weigh in on it. But if he wants to play in the Olympics and USA Basketball thinks they have a better chance of winning with him than without him, why shouldn't he play? The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Westbrook's decision via official release Friday afternoon. "After speaking with my family, I have decided to not participate in this year's Olympics," Westbrook said in a statement. "This was not an easy decision, as representing my country at the World Championships in 2010 and the Olympics in 2012 were career highlights for me. I look forward to future opportunities as a member of USA Basketball." Later on Friday, Westbrook's former teammate James Harden announced that after "a result of many different conversations with my family, the Rockets, and trusted advisors," that the current Houston guard also would not compete at this year's Summer Games. Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, John Wall and Chris Paul are others in the league who have made similar declarations. DeMarcus Cousins is the only player who's reportedly been told he has a confirmed spot on the USA Basketball 12-man roster. Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs scored 26 points for the French, who pulled away in the fourth quarter after the game was close most of the way. Fellow guard Nando de Colo, the Euroleague MVP, added 22 points. France fell just short of qualifying last summer when it lost to Spain in the EuroBasket semifinals, but it made the most of its final chance and joins Serbia and Croatia, who won the other two Olympic Qualifying Tournaments on Saturday. A draw will determine where those three teams are placed in the Rio field. The other nine teams in the 12-team field are: the U.S., Brazil, Spain, Lithuania, Argentina, Venezuela, China, Australia and Nigeria. Gasol is joined on the roster by fellow NBA players including Olympic veterans Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderon and Sergio Rodriguez and Olympic rookies Alex Abrines, Guillermo Hernangomez and Nikola Mirotic. Former NBA players and Olympic veterans Juan Carlos Navarro (fifth Olympics) and Rudy Fernandez are also on the team.
