Rob2012
Just a thought I had in the LA thread after their logo launch. Could the Games / Games Look etc work without a host city logo. What would be lost, what could be gained? If the IOC said we already have a great logo, focus on the Olympic Rings, create a great Look and that's all you need. Would that work? We'd have a lot less to discuss here and no logo comps, but do logo launches distract from other things, particularly when done in isolation with no context? I don't even know if I'm making any sense, or if this is an interesting topic. Just a thought....
JMarkSnow2012
The Olympic logo belongs to the IOC, but host city logos belong to the OCOGs. I don't think the IOC would want to over-restrict licensing of the Olympic logo around Games time, but an OCOG would want the opportunity to control and exploit use of its branding on commercial products. A host city logo would seem to be the best way to do that (though it can backfire, as in the case of London, where neither the Official Film nor the host broadcaster DVD/Blu-Ray sets use the 2012 logo on their packaging). slugbed
I would say that logos are probably more significant in the long term, to act as a symbol of the games for years to come. If every Olympics just had the Olympic rings then they would all become too similar. The logo drives the look and this connection creates a professional image that covers the logo, venues, tickets, pictograms and coverage, it would be simpler, but less exciting if this element was lost. woohooitsme83
Like others have said, I think logos are very important. It adds a sense of uniqueness and personality of each city, and gives each city more pride. "We didn't just host the Olympics, we hosted the London Olympcs." Plus, getting rid of the logos could possibly end pin collecting.

Some people make way too much of the logos and their importance towards the bid. I know the logo comps are a fun activity for a lot of people here, but in the grand scheme of things, it's such a minuscule part of the overall package. Before baron starts bashing me as well, obviously branding and an image are important things, but that goes way beyond the logo design. Those kinds of things are necessary, but yesterday was far more than a 'logo launch'
Sir Rols
You're certainly right that the trend of the past few olympiads has been for the logo to be subsumed by the look of the games more and more in the immediate lead-up and during the games themselves. The actual logos seem to be becoming less and less important and ubiquitous the closer it comes to games time. But... that's still not practical IMO in the 5-6 initial years of planning and preparation for the games. At that stage, where you're building a games identity, going out courting partners and trying to gain publicity and awareness, it still needs a good branding mark as a solid, saleable identity. Even if it will only end up being a small watermark on the actual bright and colourful packaging that the games are going to be delivered in at the end, it's still important. And we games geeks might get over-excited about logo launches, but they're still one of the most high profile and important milestones in an OCOG's quest to build an identity and excitement and awareness for their games. And possibly after the event the logo comes into its own again as the identifiable ongoing brandmark of that Olympiad.
runningrings
I've always seen the logo as vital as a point of organisation - it distinguishes the brand of the Game from the brand of the Games. I see your point but I feel its an important representation of place and time.
paul
Could the Games / Games Look etc work without a host city logo. What would be lost, what could be gained? -yes -the focus on the individual vs the mass -one step closer to the Stepford Olympics and the demise if individuality
thatsnotmypuppy
Merchandising. It's all about merchandising and none of the OCOG's would want to lose that revenue stream.
Olympic Fan Darcy
I've always found it annoying that the bidding logos don't stay as the official logo. Any reason? I liked the Tokyo bid logo for 2020, and I loved Pyeongchang's bid logo. The current one is the worst logo i've seen, yes, worse than London's inappropriate Simpsons logo.. runningrings
So by your logic Brisbane 1992 would have kept that Koala motif in your avatar as its official logo?
