Quaker2001
Says something there isn't a section for it on here. I had completely forgotten that the Youth Olympics were starting until a couple of days ago when NBC put out a press release about their daily 1-hour highlights show. The Opening Ceremony was on late last night.
woohooitsme83
I saw that the IOC YouTube channel was streaming the opening ceremony yesterday, but I quickly lost interest in watching.

BTHarner
They really are a waste of time and money. We're probably stuck with them until Rogge dies, as the IOC won't kill off his pet project while he is still around.
LatinXTC
The "youth olympics"? What are those! :-/ It's a sports event with underage kids wearing skin-tight suits and/or barely anything at all getting all sweaty that pedophiles can legally enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. It's only natural that the IOC would come up with it...
thatsnotmypuppy
Magnus Kim - a Korean kid (half Korean?) - just bet the local Nordic kids at the cross country. Apparently this is an upset. Anyhow - a lot of these teens will be at PC18. Ill keep an eye out for Ski Cross/Snowboarding at these YOGs. They'll be interesting to see what new tricks these fearless buggers are doing. Edited February 14, 2016 by thatsnotmypuppy
Fox334
Amusingly, the best senior women's ski slopestyle athlete, Kelly Sildaru, can't compete because she is too young. Magnus Kim - a Korean kid (half Korean?) - just bet the local Nordic kids at the cross country. Apparently this is an upset. He is a dual Korean-Norwegian citizen. He was born and raised in Norway and he trains there. He has South Korean citizenship through his mother.

That's probably the only sport worth watching considering how young the athletes already are in those sports during the Olympics. And aging and growth spurts are not a hindrance to them like it is in athletes of sports, such as figure skating.
Rob2012
These were never a for TV event though. As long as the the host cities feel they've benefited and the young athletes likewise, then it's all fine with me. And that's especially true if they go to cities that can't host the Big O.

But I think it dilutes and weakens the Olympic name and brand- was watching some unknown Aussie girl running around the other day saying she was an Olympic Champion...looked it up, and it was from Nanjing....yawn

You still have to qualify for the YOGs so I see that as a huge achievement - Nanjing or otherwise.

Wait...they are happening? LMFAO. About as much as the Youth Commonwealth Games does... You still have to qualify for the YOGs so I see that as a huge achievement - Nanjing or otherwise. Yeah, but these kids are no Tara Lipinski. The real prize is making it to the Olympics, not some YOG BS.

Also the YOGs can lead to sponsorship/further sports funding so it has a purpose. Don't get me wrong - I think they are kind of pointless. However if you are a 15 year old snowboarder they are a big fuckking deal. Oh and the next Tara Lipinski is competing at these Games - so keep your eyes open
Quaker2001
Yeah, but these kids are no Tara Lipinski. The real prize is making it to the Olympics, not some YOG BS. And what do you think will help these athletes get to the Olympics? So yea, if you're a teenager with Olympic aspirations, this is a nice little stepping stone. More than a few athletes out there who competing in Innsbruck in 2012 and went on to win medals in Sochi.

Victor Mata
The YOGs are futile as a sports event yeah, but it can grow to become very interesting and important as a cultural and educational program for young athletes. Lillehammer's got this very well tuned apparently.
AlexDS69
I am following the Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer. Yeah, I know that some people think that they're just BS, but I like seeing potential stars of the future taking part in these events. The cultural and educational events also add a lot of gravitas. I also like the fact that these athletes HAVE to stay for the duration of the Games, even if they've already completed the events. Of course, they're mostly minors. It probably wouldn't work for those over 18. Could you imagine elite athletes at the Olympics being forced to stay and attend conferences and such? Many would beg the nearest volunteer to smuggle their asses out. "I'll give you this worthless bronze medal which you can flog on eBay, use as a coaster, or fashion into a coke spoon if you can get me out of here! If I have to attend one more damn seminar on the side effects of drugs, I'll kill somebody!"
